In a wet sump drive the gears are turn in a bath of oil with the dry sump the oil is stored in a different reservoir and sprayed on the gears as they turn. Gears turn easier in air than oil less horse power loss.

Jeff32,
Yes there are dry sump engines as well as drives. On the engines there is normally an external oil tank to hold the oil allowing it to cool and to keep oil from splashing up against the crankshaft, which causes a loss of horsepower. The Porsche 911 is one car that has this. There is also less chance of loosing oil pressure during hard turns and acceleration.
