No fair pulling the Leviathan thread...

...just because the guy shows up to defend himself.

Sorry guys, I am with leviathan on this one. I might not do what he does in the vid, but if he and his buddy want to do fly-bys of each other, that is their business.

I thought we separated from England because we wanted freedom. Now you guys are wanting to tell a trained boat racer what to do with his boat thousands of miles from here. I wouldn't even suggest you try that with me, much less some dude on another continent.

By telling leviathan how to operate his boat, how are you any different from the blue hairs that want to put a speed limit on your boat?

Just my .02.

Not really. One of our friends from across the pond made a video, people called him an idiot for driving like an azz, he came on here and explained himself...and the thread gets deleted.

I did not delete it because the person in the video showed up. The thread got ugly with jabs being launched across the pond which was not right. If a General Discussion Moderator wants to re-open it; that's fine. It does not matter who/what/when was coordinated. The fact is that folks will view the video in a manner that appears the boat is being operated in an unsafe manner; and that will hurt all of us. No one that arbitrarily views the video is going to know its the same boat being passed over and over (even though there were a couple boats passed rather close); especially folks who are trying to gun us down and restrict powerboaters. No one is going to know a 'movie' was being filmed. No one is going to know how experienced the driver behind the wheel might have been. When was the last time you met a powerboat educated insurance underwriter? I know a few that would cast off powerboats in a second if they saw this video.

I anticipate the next Local Water Safety meeting showing the movie for a general viewing, complete with popcorn and daggers.

Make sure the local water safety group don't get hold of this vid! It was hosted on scream and fly a while back - how close?

We could go back and forth for hours into days on this. However, when folks comment on why our insurance rates keep hiking skyward, and why we keep getting a bad reputation (we have significant issues with this); its obvious that videos like these are hurting us, not helping us. My posts above are common sense. I am not launching or returning a personal attack.

Just because that guy robbed a bank, does it mean its OK for me to rob one? Come on.

Come on, he was being called all sorts of names and responded. He didn't throw any names back he just defended his video.

If you notice it's on a foreign powerboat site? It also says "continied" on the end of the video and the second part shows them cordinating and setting up the entire event.

Then they aren't educated. I would add, one guy doesn't set up rates for a corporation based on a internet video from England. http://www.boatmad.com/forum/images/...likeadrain.gif

Controlled environment, calm conditions, open water, no other boats around.... what's the problem??

Re: No fair pulling the Leviathan thread...

After watching both vids I thought that you put a slant on it that was unfair with the label of your thread. That probably influenced the reponses you got especially as you only posted one link at a time.

There are plenty of links here that show the dangers of boating.

Not saying that I thought that what was depicted was wise.
Far from it. It could have gotten real ugly.

You did know where they came from and you knew that it was being filmed for a purpose by an experienced racer.

That sounds like the conditions that ended up with pics of a new 42' Fountain in some trees. Didn't hurt anyone, so who cares?

Let's see...Insurance companies, sailboaters (how close was Leviathan's flyby on the vid of the sailboat, 40'? Were they part of the film crew, or just someone who got in the way of a responsible controlled situation  ), waterfront land owners who want to restrict speeds and access, etc, etc. That kind of stuff affects us.

Would someone please show me how an internet video made in a foreign country, England, by an experienced racer for filming purposes only effects the insurance rates here?

The responses on the other thread were uncalled for here on OSO, hence I deleted my own thread. Please don't confuse me with OSO Management/Steve.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions. I don't have to change mine, and it just so happens a few agree with my view.

Re: No fair pulling the Leviathan thread...

Who knows, it may affect rates everywhere...

It adds to the perception by non-performance boaters that go-fasts are owned and driven by irresponsible idiots. Hell, most of the posting I've seen on this video, here and elsewhere, was against it, from go-fast owners.

It just adds fuel to the fire that we are under already. Who would have thought that one kid (in how many years of pro hockey?) getting killed by an errant puck at a game would mandate that every arena have huge nets surrounding the ice? Not the same situation of course, but an example of how public perception can change things.

it affects us by giving ammunition to the special intrest groups that are forming to put more laws on the books that would change your boating by speed limits or noise laws, how would you feel about just being able to run 45 all day long in a boat you bought to run 90 and then finding out that this also make insurance companys nervous and brings more attention to speed and accidents which in turns raises our rates across the board.
if this is not happening in your area believe me it soon will :(

buy a sailboat or a horse and go live on a speed limit lake... the 42 beak wasnt in open water to end up in the trees Einstein

how can we tell the difference? all this time i thought our troops were fighting for freedom of speech religion etc, i guess thats all meaningless here on oso. if someone gets there feelings hurt that easily they should stay the hell away from the internet. free speech its what this country stands for, that is except for here on oso. if a thread gets a lil too hot for anyone dont visit the thread any more and get on with your life.

GOOD POINTS ....... and yes all that stuff affects us, insurance rates, speed limits, no wake zone areas, noise restrictions and so on. If the video was filmed for movie purposes, they should put that info at the start and end of the tape. EVERY YEAR people complain here on OSO about INSURANCE RATES, BEING DROPPED by INSURANCE CARRIERS, SPEED and NOISE RESTRICTIONS and so on ......... HMMMM gee I wonder why that is  VIDEOS LIKE THESE BEING PUBLISHED ON THE NET FOR THE WORLD TO SEE......BTW that does include local authorities and townships, blue hairs, manatee fans, Coast Guard and YES underwriters. This is all eroding the FUN FACTOR out of the sport we love. We need to show the positives NOT the negatives of the sport

Dude, you need to calm down. I thought you were kidding on the wussie comment. I was pretty much done with this subject, but my feelings were not hurt in the least. Again, I deleted it because I felt the thread turned into crap and personal attacks; via others' posts. I have a pretty thick skin. You can tell by the annotation who deletes a thread. It was not OSO, it was me, and everyone can delete their own threads/posts.

Thanks, but I'll pass. I just hope the choice to live on a non-speed limit lake with a performance boat is still there with all of the irresponsible idiots out hell bent on f*cking it up for everybody. Just an opinion.

On the thread that got ditched, I said summat about 1 rule for one, and another rule for the other. sighting 200mph pleasure boats as extremely dangerous, but OK in your eyes coz they're cool.

Me, passing our camera boat 6 feet away at 71mph, is clearly dangerous and unacceptable to you lot, but in a thread posted tonight on OSO, there's talk of a 46 Skater that runs 223mph! lets say he regularly goes boating with 4 or 5 people on board. Are you seriously telling me that the life of those occupants isn't at a higher risk than the people in the making of my video?

utter tosh!

it's OK to do 223mph coz it's cool, and you'd all like to!

Any insurance person who saw that boat pass, however far away it was, wouldn't EVER want to insure the occupants lives, would you?

so get off my case.

It wasn't even me who posted the video on your site!

BTW anyone who wants to see some vids, check out www.boatmad.com and go to 'multimedia' (or the forum)

Hi 'JS232', thanks for the interest.

It's a British built 'Phantom'. the builder retired in 2000 after a 31 year spell at building small-ish sports & race boats, the bigest being a one-off 31 footer.

My 28 runs 71mph with the diesels, driving through Bravo 1's

You can see the build and a few pics
