It depends what is meant by "fast". The Fountain record boat is more of a drag racer than anything else, specially built for the kilo run. It wouldn't be any good for say Miami-Nassau-Miami and that sort of thing. And La Gran Argentina and more recent boats he built around that concept are still arguably the fastest endurance machines. Kilo is a distance that doesn't really register on Fabio's scale. It's like comparing a 100-meter sprinter and a marathon runner. Both awesome athletes but cannot really be compared with any objective measure. So IMHO, respect to both of them, both are awesome boats but horses for courses as they say...

BTW, Fabio's site is pretty much up to date with his new STAB concept and the pleasure version of the 55' RIB that he just delivered. But in general, many manufacturs claim to make the fastest boat, just as generally all of them claim to be or at least have been world champions of some sort.

Fabio worked out of our Miami shop back in the 80's for a month before the WC in Key West a really cool person to be around. We took him out to the aircraft junk yard where they went nuts grabbing everything imaginable.I am Glad to have spent time talking to him.

Fabio is definitely a character. With him, it's either a love or hate relationship, no middle ground. That's why he doesn't have only friends across the world but when people get to know him, they usually learn to ignore his more difficult side simply because he is a genius in his own field.

That's why he didn't mix too well with Reggie although I believe Mr. Brunswick/Mercury had a say in that one too.

I wish we could relive the 80s and 90s when racers from Europe raced the worlds in KW, Atlantic City etc. But the fact is, true performance boating is pretty much dead in Europe. At some point in the 90s, some idiot decided that it was not cool anymore to be noticed, to show off and therefore to have a loud offshore powerboat. Suddenly, all the Cigarette and Apache guys decided that it was much cooler to have Aprea Mare boats, the 30mph POS posted below. And that was the end of it, suddenly 50 mph became too fast for comfort. As a result, if you look at today's UIM racing, apart from class 1, it's a sad sight. Apart from Buzzi and few other guys running new technology, all the others are running 80s recycled stuff that is starting to look really tired. And it will stay that way until trends swing again and it starts being cool all over again to own a loud, no-apologies go-fast boat. And I am eagerly awaiting that day...
