Single Engine Boats

I am currently boatless and looking. A single engine boat may be my next boat. I want a full cabin and a large sundeck for all the Claymates. I would like to have a 1990-1999, 27 to 30 foot "Cigarette type" single engine boat. What would you recommend?

Feel free to recommend ANY single engine boat... not just the ones in the poll.

Re: Single Engine Boats

A 29 Outlaw would be a pretty big boat all around and I've seen some single engine examples running around. If performance is not an issue, that might be the most bang for your buck. I like the 288 Sunsations but they will be a little cramp for the Claymates. Fuel/maintenance scaring you away from twins or the upfront cost?

hey Clay! A friend of mine has a 26 powerquest single 454 mpi. I have an old 84 criscraft stinger 260 with twin 350-275 hp total 550 HP. went to a 2 hours non stop 40-50 mph and another 3 hours back. I spent 20 $ more than him... + one time came back home on 1 engine with wife and 3 daughters (6 months-3 and 5 years old) THANKS TWIN ! would not go back single engine. good luck in your choice!

I'm gonna have to write in on my ballet too. None of my pics are in that list. However, Craney and I seem to be on the same page. Those three are the ONLY three under 30' boats with a single engine I would consider.

On a different note.....What happened to the Bullets and Sonics you were talking about?

29 Scarab is a big 29' with nice lines. Dont expect any performance.

1995 Scarab 29' w/ 502

I've seen nice ones as low as $30k recently on trader. I have a buddy with one at LOTO and it runs rough weekend water quite well due to it's narrower beam.

Re: Single Engine Boats

The Active Thunder 28 is a very big 28, well mannered, high freeboard, big cabin, enclosed head. I was very happy with mine.

http://www.offshoreonly.com/esvon/page-4839.html

I've never been in a Powerplay 28, but I'm sure it's just as well built as their 33's. This one has twin SBC's... bulletproof package. I'm not sure if they've got got a porta-potti in the 28. PP's do have a fairly low freeboad as well, if that's an issue.

Magic Wizard 29 XL

Only problem is the HUGE cabin door will let the Claymates bail on you more easily!

Re: Single Engine Boats

Clay, I think you're exactly on the right track. If you plan to boat mainly on Lake Travis you can have the luxury of going faster, using less gas, and buying and maintaining half as many engines.

As someone with a heavy twin engine wave crusher on Lake Travis now, my opinion is that the ideal go-fast boat for the lake is around 29' and single engine, albeit one engine with about 800 hp. Make sure it's hooked up to a drive that can take it.

Re: Single Engine Boats

29 Scarab is my choice, of course I'm kinda biased! :D
Has good free board, rides great in the rough stuff. Didn't have any problems memeorial weekend getting in and out of the cove. You can also find some really great deals on them. Descent size cabin and porta john inside!

Good luck CLAY!! :D

Extreme 29 Shotgun. There is no other boat in it's size (29'6") with a single 496HO/XR that can match it's speed. Period. 83 mph and still dialing. This is with a cabin, stereo with amps and alot of bling bling.

Re: Single Engine Boats

WOW! Great responses. Keep 'em coming! :D

Dreamer, I would LOVE to have that Playboy Cigarette, but it's not gonna happen this year.

And for anyone else asking (Knot4Me, Buck, etc.), Sandahl said it best. I plan to boat mostly on Lake Travis. While I would love to keep my next boat in a wet slip, I will probably trailer it. So........ A single engine, 28 to 30 foot boat will give me the smooth ride I want with the least expense (gas, maintenance, etc.)

I like the Magic Wizard and the Extreme Shotgun, but I want a "known" manufacturer. Pantera, Apache, Scarab, Thunder, Velocity all sound good.

Like I tell all of the Claymates... Keep 'em cumming! :D

Re: Single Engine Boats

I'd go for the 28apache in the classifieds w/ 525.
Dont know of any single pantera's for sale.
Plus the claymates would dig that apache paint.

Also, the 28 active thunder would be a good choice, 99k in the classifieds.

$99K!!! My friend will sell me his 1990 29-foot Fountain for $40K. It has big engines (twins) and will probably go 80.

I am looking for a newer boat (1995 or later) with a single engine for under $40K. I don't need to go fast, just smooth.

Clay Washington 01-03-2006 08:31 AM

Re: Single Engine Boats

BTW... Here is an example of what I am looking for...

29-foot Scarab

Late model (10 years old), Single engine, around $40K, clean, turn-key... Hmmmm :)

I don't need to go fast now. It's easier to add speed to an existing boat. It's tough to add length. :p

Extreme is not 'known"???? Not a mass produced production but a true custom built boat. Check out the past years of World Champion and National wins on the APBA/SBI and OSS circuts. Extreme built race boats first, then pleasure boats and the pleasure boats are built to the same spec's as the race boats !!! Even on the race conditions, there has never been an Extreme De-Lam or Break !!!! Just for your info.... Dave

Re: Single Engine Boats

Active Thunder or Pantera.

The AT has the biggest cabin. The Pantera has the biggest sundeck because of how the swim platform is set up.

Problem is that you won't find either for under 40k, at least not if you want an engine it. :D

I think that was commment was meant in the wrong contex.
I think CLAY is referring to that name brand of boat is not used in the area he lives in. I live in Houston and when I searched for my boat I was shopping for a type that was well known on the water I run in. This also would help in resale in the area I live in in the future.

I was not familiar with your brand boat until I got on this site. Of course I had not gotten into boat racing either which I'm sure had a lot to do with it.

Oops! Sorry... Please read what 29scarab said.

I have never seen an Extreme on my lake, but I will consider them. Do you know of any For Sale that you would recommend?
