Swimming pools and boats

Already have a 38 fountain - just built a new house and most likely going to put a pool in. How many of you have a boat and a pool. How much do you use each - I currently boat at lake cumberland from April 1 to Nov 2 hitting about 80% of the weekends. The way I see it - I need some form of water for Mon, Tues, Weds and Thurs. Opinions please!!

Re: Swimming pools and boats

Have a boat and signed a contract on a pool, they start 1st week of March. Have friends with pools and enjoy them, think it a great thing after a day of boating . We are fortunate enough to boat years round in FLA and the pool season is longer too. Some people advised us against it..say you will use it alot for awhile then novelty will wear off and never touch it. Sounds a lot like when we bought first boat.......they were 100% wrong there and we disagree with the pool prediction as well.

I think you are right. We built a pool for the girls and I had a big waterfall built at the end so that you can enjoy it year 'round.

I always figured that we had a pool the wife wouldn't be into boating anymore. Why do all the work of going boating when you could just go outside to the pool? I always seem to find an excuse when she talks about one. I think my time is running out though. Finances is always a good one to use.

we have had a pool for 4years now. it is great,we call it our weekday water. but they sure make you lazy. check out www.polarpools.com saved us about 15k building it our selfs.
be sure to check into the new salt systems i forget what they are called. that is the only way to go. no chemicals pays for its self in 3-4 years. and the water is always clear.

diging the hole has the hard part. i did the whole pool size down to the shallow depth with a bob cat. then my uncle dug the deep end out with his backhoe. back filled with a bobcat and by hand. friend of mine owns a concrete company. his guys did the flat work for me on the side i think i paid them $500 or $600 for there labor only took them one day. i more thing always make a bigger patio then you want you will use it. i added 3' x 34' to mine last year.

Re: Swimming pools and boats

Here's my .02, There is a couple of things I would make sure of first, make absolutely sure you want one before you do it, On the resale of your home in the future, some people just don't want one and will not buy it with one. Make sure the contractor has good references, a lot of them dig a hole in your yard and move to the next job to do the same there and so on. You have a hole in your yard and he won't come back to finish yours because he needs to get as many started as poss. Get a automatic cleaner because you don't want to spend all your time on maintenance because you will want to be boating or swimming not working. Last post a lot of bikin pictures :D

Pool is great after boating. We live about a mile frome the boat ramp and come home after boating to sit around the pool. We hardly ever get in the water but is a nice setting so I vote more patio smaller pool.

We have a salt water pool that make it's own clorine. I only use chemicals to start up and shut down the pool. And it works of normal salt that gets delivered by Culigan. $7 a bag. www.watermaidnj.com

I spent about $50 the whole summer on supplies and the water is always perfect and clear. Best investment I ever made into a product.

Use the boat almost every weekend, use the pool maybe once a month or for parties.... Wife had to have it and now never uses it.. I thing to consider, get the pool with a self cleaning system weither salt water or not, ALOT less work, good luck...

Wife and kids have been on me to get a pool and my answer will always be the same...

We have a 42' island we do not need a pool. Besides I enjoy taking care of the boat .... cleaning a pool (altough they say they would do it... never would happen) ranks way up there with getting a root canal and blowing up an engine...

Word to the wise... Get a good contractor with references. Be prepared for a mess in the yard until the project is completed. If you plan on this year, do it now, as the project could take 4 months or more.

Here is a before and after.

Same here, I hate the thing, and wish I had a few truck loads of dirt to fill it back in. I don't use it, my wife NEVER uses it. My 9 year daughter on the other hand loves it. She can't get enough of the water. So for her to swim in it once or twice a week in the summer I'm stuck cleaning it, fixing broken parts, adding chemicals every week, back washing it, brushing it, etc. It's about 8 years old now and last year I had to replace the pump, the valves, the Barricuda cleaner, I had the tile cleaned with a bead blaster, had the concrete acid washed and of course that all added up to about 2500 dollars on top of all the regular maintenance. I should have built an in ground spa with a gazebo. Now that IMO would be a better investment.

Oh btw, I had a puppy drown in the pool last year. We had showed it how to get to the steps for about a week straight. I though it was good and could find it's way out if it fell in.... We came home late one night after going out and found him floating in it. Another reason why I hate the pool.

Put an extra 20k in your boat and forget the pool.

Re: Swimming pools and boats

We had a pool at the last house, it was a major pain $3-$5k for heat, chemicals and cleaning! New house no pool, but did get a above ground hot tub, the community pool up the street if the kids want to swim and the neighbors have pools. I asked the family what they wanted, bigger boat or a pool, they all agreed BIGGER FASTER BOAT!

Re: Swimming pools and boats

Have a pool and a boat. The kids use the pool during the week, and we boat on the weekends. I get in the pool about 3 times a year. I hate it. I can't wait until the kids outgrow the pool so I can throw a 1/4 stick of dynamite in the pool.

Wardey 01-09-2006 08:44 AM

Re: Swimming pools and boats

I have -0- regrets of the pool !!! I have a salt water pool with a care taker system built into the floor, 420,000 btu heater which heats the spa in minutes, motorized jandy valves with a jandy control system I can call from anywhere and turn lights on, heat on or off. When the temps get down to about 36 degrees the pool automaticly turns itself on to keep pipes from freezing. Plus don't forget the added value to your house. Dave

Re: Swimming pools and boats

If you put a pool in get an automatic pool cover and a Pool Frog. Cover will keep it clean, lower heating costs and extend chemical life. The Pool Frog automatically distributes the chemicals for you, have to change it out once a month takes 5 mins to do.

Have both and LOVE both. My kids swim in it all the time. It's really nice after a hot day of boating, to come back to the dock, jump in the pool to get cooled off, then it's back to cleaning up the boat. :drink: Wouldn't live in Fl. without 1! :D

Re: Swimming pools and boats

We bought a new house this summer that already had a pool. I never wanted one, because I thought the time and $ spent maintaining the pool would eat into my boating. So, I'm a reluctant pool owner.
However, it has become more fun than I anticipated.......we've had some pretty cool pool parties when we're too tired (or hungover) to go to the lake :drink: , and the ladies always dress appropriately (very little) :D .
The way I look at it now is it's another option for having a good time with our friends. I would still rather be boating, of course.
Recommendations (echoed from above): bigger patio space with a tiki bar and hot tub/spa, and an auto cleaner.
Question for you guys with pool heaters (we don't have one).........
How much does it cost run it? Natural gas is getting very expensive here (middle TN).
Regards,
Steve
