depends, many supercat teams this year ran their 750's with Y pipes, you may actually be able to pick up some power this way...

I was told it could handle 900 hp. All I know it will be good stuff and I am trying to delay ordering my boat so I can get these motors.
i don't think merc is replacing the 600, just adding a turned up version, the 720

Thats what I hear also. The 600 was always 720/750 hp, just detuned for the xr drive.

The Teague is just a slightly upgraded XR. I don't know that they can even handle 700 HP reliably on a 38 foot boat. That is why everybody is screaming for Mercury to put out a drive that fiills the gap between the XR's and the 6's.

I can't wait to see what Ilmor comes out with next. So what was your impression of the ZR? Did you like it? How does it compare with other 38's you've driven?

Some taller people have complained that the ZR's are very shallow boats.

I am 6'3" and felt okay. I am going to have the front bolsters custom made with a center bolster. While doing this I going to have them make the seat on the bolsters sit about 6" lower than the stock one. The boat rode very nice but I do not have anything to compare it to. The boat I have now is a 38 Fountain LX which has a 10'6" beam and triple outboards.

I heard the new motor was going to replace the 600. I doubt they would have a 525, 600,720. It would not make sense to me. But if they can make money selling all those motors I can see why they might sell all 3 of them.

They are great boats, no question - and that hull has more than proved itself on the race course.

According to Ilmor sources, they are actually looking at keeping the 550 and using some different components and giving it a price advantage by lowering the present cost. They would problably go to less expensive exhaust, intake etc., and use them to the compete against the popular 496 in performance boats and the cruiser market that uses the 496's now. These engines would be perfect for large freshwater cruisers with all the low rpm torque lighter weight and the fuel savings would be a great advantage also.
I understand that the 550 market has fallen off with the introduction of the new 625's which is not surprizing.

I did not trim the drives past 4, Mike from Lightning Bay said trimmed out it does 96. Yes I left the check book at home trying to play it safe. Besides I need to sell a 2005 Fountain 38 LX with triple 225 optimax if anyone knows someoone that wants that boat.
FYI, the 38 zr runs 91 mph with 525's and 5 blade herrings. Just to put a little perspective into your decision making...

I am taking a ride in a 38ZR with 525's in the next couple of weeks. After that ride I should be able to make an decision. I was told that the 525 boat is more like an 85-87 mph boat all day but 90 would not be the normal speeds that boat would hit. The 625 boat is a 91-92 mph all day with 96 speeds attainable under the right conditions. I want to see the acceleration and mid-range punch the 525 boat has compared to the 625 boat. I am actually more concerned about the 60-90 sprint than I am the actual top speed of the boat.
