Profiling with your boat on the trailer ?
I had lunch yesterday with a co worker and were talking about motorcycle rallies etc how some people for instance attend the rally with their bike in tow and are very proud. I told him I think the same is true about boating. Dont most of us feel proud towing our boats vs keeping it in the slip year round. I told him we work hard for our money and I think some of the fun of this is when someone comes up to you in a gas station and starts asking alot of questions regarding the boat how fast , how much, etc
Therefore I think this is very similar to the motorcycle rallies. I would like to hear some thoughts on this. I again think we work hard for our money and whats wrong with showing off our toys while we are trailering them on the interstate. Do some of you have some feeling on this. Thanks Jane |
I must admit I do feel like a pimp when I have the boat in tow.
Plus it looks bigger !!! I just thought of something, I need a smaller truck then it will look even bigger ! I use the same theory in dating, I always date women with small hands  :D |
LOL
|
LMAO Chuck! I agree Jane, plus Chuck is right they look much bigger on the trailer. Mine is a lot faster too! :D
|
Yes I enjoy pulling the boat. You get a lot of interesting looks. I've pulled into truck stops and had truck drivers come up to me and say that they heard "I was headed this direction".
|
Boat Parades are great too. How all the kids get excited seeing a line of boats coming down the street.
|
I get a lot of people waving and stuff when I pull the boat somewhere. Of course my wife says it's because I just lost another wheel bearing, but I think it's cuse it looks cool. :D
|
I know what you mean, folks!
It's a great feeling and it should make you proud. People do take interest. Most of the time they have nice things to say, but I've had not so nice things said, too. Like "Look, there's another little rich white kid." or "Hope you enjoy it, azzhole!" Of course, those are in the areas you shouldn't be trailering through anyway. :D :D |
I tow my boat only because i have too. I would much rather have it on a lift at the water ready to go! :D :D
|
they do get a lot more exposer on land than sea.for me it was at gas station when a fine lady said she loved the boat I right there and then forgot how much I had dropped down that hole.
|
I don't trailer, but I will say that every performance boat I see on the highway turns my head. I've pulled into gas stations for no other reason than to get a closer look at someone's boat.
|
When I trailer my 38 I have had many people hang in my blind spot checking out the boat. Sometimes it's a pain when I'm trying to switch lanes and I have to count to 10 keeping my cool realizing it's just a compliment. Tomorrow I'll be trailering from Michigan to Ohio  should get a lot of looks this time of year.(Hope it doesn't snow!)
|
You are so right. I do love the comments people make when you filling up for gas, etc. But my wife hates it because, the name of my boat is "BLONDES PREFERRED", so when we're driving down the interstate people (always slow down when they drive right up next to us and lean forward to see if their really is a blonde in the passenger seat! Every time we travel that happens. :D :D :D :D
|
Baja Daze,
I know what you mean, I have confronted people making comments about having a nice boat at a early age, 24yr. Screw them, their just jealous, I sacrificed not buying a house to afford my boat. As for Jane, you are right I am very proud to take my boat places, Poker Runs, Parades, Tie ups, or just out with friends. :D WILL :D |
Scott...how come your moving the boat this time of year??...Are you going to the Change of Watch Party Sat.???
|
Jim,
Yes Mary and I (a.k.a. the new guys) will be there :D. I am hauling it back from the factory they just finished up with some warranty issues. [ 01-17-2002: Message edited by: Scott ] |
Sometimes its almost (ALMOST!!)as much fun on the trailer as in the water. I've gotten more attention towing it to the lake than I have on the lake. One of the better lines @ a gas station-"I fell in love with your boat until I saw how much gas you put in it!"
|
hehe i was just thinking about this the other day! For me its one extreme or the other...when people pass me up when i'm in tow they either give me a big smile and a thumbs up or some times (and this is usually the old ladies doing it) they have this disgusted look on their faces and shakeing their heads no....i think its from the saying "Have Fun Stay Single" on the back transome!!! :D :D :D
heheh |
You are right. When I had my boat (a Z33) it looked huge behind my truck. I always thought it was cool and got lots of looks. Especially at the gas station where I spent a lot of time. It takes almost 30min to put 200gals in. I really liked passing large glass buildings so I could see myself. The next boat will be similar so I can tow it around and have the same feeling. :D BUT NOT A DONZI

23scarab, having skinny legs helps too. :D
|
How about trailering one of our boats... It is hilarious! What is that? Does it fly! I bet that thing goes 200 mph! Every gas station we hit. Makes our long trips so much more enjoyable, not to mention the hundreds of people who pass on the highway with the double thumbs up!
|
Jane,
It all depends!! If I am headed down the road to go boating or returning, I get a good feeling when I get a look. But when I am trailering it to some shop to prove they screwed up the work I had them do.. well leaves a bad taste.. if you know what I mean. I am hoping to get it running and bring it to Bay City area this summer. That may change my attitude toward trailering... Say did you get my email Jane? 26scarab, LOL on the hands theory!! |
I'm always fine with the "Cigar" boat questions,
"How big"? "How fast"? "How much HP"? "How much gas"? etc, etc, but, how much $$$? always ticks me off, down right rude! |
Great topic just yesterday afternoon I was pulling our Scarab down the 405 freeway in So Cal.at about 5pm. The traffic was bad but I must admit it was a good ego boost to watch people point and honk when they see 70+ ft of Excursion & Scarab rolling by !!!!
Doug :D :D |
Mine doesn't attract attention like the likes of your boats, but I too really like looking at the big boats going down the road, especially when you get a line of them heading to Havasu or Powell. You folks are lucky, I'm noticing that none of you have to pull the mountains out west here. If you had to do some of these hills you might not find it quite as fun. ;) :D

uh oh huh uh oh huh (say in your bestTim Allen voice)
The funny thing is one day, I let my wife drive the truck/trailer with no boat as we went to the launch on a slow day there. I kept telling her "keep going don't turn, keep going keep going" (it was dirving her nuts to not turn) "okay, NOW you can turn" She thought I was nuts and still came within about 3" of the curb and the look on her face was hilarious. Like "dddaaaammmnnnn this thing needs a half mile to turn!" What's also funny as hell, was last year at the boat ramp, a guy with acrew cab SD Ford 4x4 dually was backing up a single jet ski trailer down the boat ramp. Man, I LMAO a him. Took probably 20 minutes. Kept waiting for him to just back over it. I also notice the blind spot deal, that's irritating. But it's cool to tow the boat. Mark |
Intolerant1,
I've got the skinny legs , it's just the beer gut that throws everything out of whack :D |
I will say I get alot attention pulling my 43 ft Black Thunder. Just pulled mine last weekend from NC to Ga to demo a customer. It does take a while at the gas station to put in 280 gallons and I get ALOT of people coming up to me and asking all kinds of questions. The best is when I am towing the boat to Florida for much warmer weather!!
|
It's something special towing your boat around, you have a piece of evolving fiberglass behind you with lots of blood sweat and tears put into it, all you can think is "this is mine" and everyone gets to se it. We only tow the boats up north and back once a year. The looks and comments we get just from those two trips is enough to last the whole winter. The best is when a little guy rolls the window down to give you the thumbs up, you feel like you just made that kids day. At a gas station one day I was filling it up .. a whole 50 gals. a guy walked over and said "damn i would like to have that, it must run a couple weeks on that gas".. I turned around and about fell on the ground laughin, after I wiped my tears from my eyes and said " it maybe will last a few hours" the guys mouth dropped.. he couldn't believe it..
DONZIMITCH.... i know what your saying about glass buildings... it's a great feeling :) |
I am with Kentz on this one. I don't mind the questions until they ask how much it costs. When I tell them then they ask "how can a guy your age afford that". That is when I end the conversation.
|
Come on Troutly,
Admit it , you get that special feeling when people are admiring your boat when cruising down the road ! I'm sure it's a different feeling than when you have the lights on in the cruiser ! :D |
I don't mind most of the questions I get about my boat. I especially like the people who assume that there must a husband or boyfriend around somewhere and that the boat's his. I love the looks on their faces when I tell them that it's mine and that I really do drive it.
|
Not even the gun belt ?!?!?!
|
I love pulling mine. I have not done the glass building trick yet, but I am sure I will one day. I too look young, and often people ask me if that is my "Daddy's boat." I just smile and say its mine, all mine; and I worked VERY hard for it. I have yet to have the little placard made that someone mentioned they had on the rear of their port trailer fender: "Your girlfriend wants a ride." I passed two guys in a channel, who were all proud of their jointly owned 260 Prowler, and as I passed them I asked what motor, and and who owned it. As one motioned they both owned their's, and the other mentioned his 496HO, I smiled, and said this one is all mine, including that pretty Blue HP500EFI. They told me to F-off. LOL

Jane - You hit a nerve with this thread - "showing off our toys". I've only trailored mine a couple of times so far, but I felt like a peacock in the mating season. Very first gas stop, this young guys walks by and say, "Dope ass boat dude." Before I could hit him, I notice my son smiling and saying thanks. So I held up - turns out that's some kind of great complement. Believe it or not, later out in the middle of the desert, this pickup with a couple of cute girls drives by with a little sign. You guessed it, "Dope ass boat!" But then that was my wife and daughter :D :p :p
p.s. I need to try that glass building thing ;) [ 01-18-2002: Message edited by: Uncle Toys ] |
I enjoy towing the Skater. Same standard questions as everyone else. Except this! One day a nice elderly lady said, "Wow that is a nice pontoon boat!"  :o :o
I just smiled and said THANKS! Shane  |
For some reason I have no idea what you guys are talking about???????
I also trailer the thing every where... |

I was checking into a slip at my local marina when I bought my Scarab in August. Was trying to decide whether or not to trailer. The marina owner said nobody trailers a boat that big. (only 26') Keep in mind I'm in Arkansas. I decided to trailer for now. The trip to and from the lake is half the enjoyment. I love watching people stare. Hell, I'll even go uptown on Friday night to gas it up and gloat a little. :) If I can't enjoy it on the water, I may as well enjoy it off the water.

Hey, I bought a new $3500 aluminium trailer just because it looks so cool going down the road! Now I just need a cool boat to go with it :p
