Aluminum anodes are good for all types of water,, salt, brackish, fresh, magnesium for pure fresh and zinc for pure salt, alum bridges all the gaps like I have int he hudson.......

Is it a lesser grade of Aluminum than your outdrive? You're drive case is aluminum so it would be eating away at both of them at the same time. Electrolosis eats away at the softer metal first, then goes after the next best thing. Then again, I'm use to salt water.. :rolleyes:

Cheap assurance buy yoursef a zinc fish and connect it to the negative battery terminal and hang it over the side of the boat.

I've heard of hanging those zinc fish from the tie bars between the drives. Is it better to connect them to the neg side of the battery? Never seen anyone do that. Sounds like a great idea, if it really works. :eek:

It works great, just as long as everything on the boat is grounded.

All the grounding wires in a boat are a light green, they should connect everything metal that is in contact with the water. Some folks even ground radar arches and windshields.

Connecting the zinc to the negative batery post is just like connecting it to the tie bar, drive, trim tab etc. just as long as they are all grounded. It will protect the whole system, it becomes an extra zinc.

Hey guys, boat was rerigged in 2002-3, and since then the owner has only been able to use it a couple of times, only 20+ hours!, so the drives even though need some TLC, are like new inside. The boat is priced at this number because it does need some cosmetic care!

Chriss288. The other responses pretty much sum up what you can do. The other thing that I know is that when you start to get the pitting and errosion from the electolosis, you need to clean the drive, sand prep and respray the areas so that there is no exposure other than the paint. Any spots the bare metal from the drive is exposed, will attract the damage and it will spread from there. I didnt know the problem got worse in the Salt. All my experience to date has been in fresh water.
