496 HO's...
I was wondering if anyone has added any power options to thier 496's... I was looking into Pro Chargers or Whipples, but not sure if these motors are the best foundation... Just wondering if anyone has added anything to thiers and if they have had any troubles with them... The Motors have 90 hours on them now if that makes a difference...
Thanks |
Re: 496 HO's...
Hey Steve,
The CMI headers will give you around 50 HP. Plus they sure do look nice. Dave |

Re: 496 HO's...
Not really sure what I want to do... I was talking to someone a little while ago that said the GIL headers (I think) he has makes his boat sound ALOT Better... Which Interests me...
But basically the boat goes just over 80mph on GPS, and if I could put it into the 90's with some form of added power (I don't think the headers would be enough) I might be interested doing something to it... But I really don't want to create a HUGE Headache and the boat be in the shop more then it's on the water... That's #1... Maybe with the headers, I won't add any headaches, get a few MPH and make some more Noise... Any guesses what another 100 HP (total) would do to my MPH..?? |
Re: 496 HO's...
Whipple it. I had one on my old boat & picked up 12mph & never had a minutes problem with the setup. Very nice product.

Re: 496 HO's...
What boat is it? Also what drives are hanging off the back? You could change your lowers or mess with different props to start......i like the header idea 1st....
|
Re: 496 HO's...
2-3mph
|
Re: 496 HO's...
It's a Sunsation Dominator... Has Bravo 1's on it (which could add to the problem as well...)

Re: 496 HO's...
Right... That is what I was afraid of... I really don't want to crack those motors open... I am really just looking for some bolt on Noise, with maybe a few MPH I guess...
Looks like the Headers are the first thing to start with... Feels like I'm working on the Mustangs again...haha |

Good luck, not trying to be discouraging but I think the 496 are just as good as they can be... STOCK! Raylar seems to have real world results, search the forums, it's been discussed a lot... |
Re: 496 HO's...
If you have mufflers, REMOVE them! :D You'l find 1-2 mph's and a great sound! :D
|
Re: 496 HO's...
Nope no Mufflers...
Guess it depends how much sound we are talking... And we're really talking $6K since there's twins... But if I got a few more MPH with it, and some Bling (Chrome) could be worth it.. Who knows... I'm just exicted... I'd really just settle for some 70 degree Weather... :drink: |
Re: 496 HO's...
Are 496 H.O.'s way better on gas than HP500 EFI's??
|
Re: 496 HO's...
You got me... I've only had the boat for 3 weeks, and only went for a 45 minute ride... Although I did hear they were "More" fuel efficient then other motors...
Maybe that means 1MPG instead of 1/2MPG.... |
Re: 496 HO's...
How do 496 HO's sound compared to 500HP's??
|
Re: 496 HO's...
JUST DO THE CMI SPORT TUBES........bolt on HP and torque and keep the warranty in place as well.....just my .02
|
Re: 496 HO's...
I think it would be more like $6k a side with installation.

$3600 retail per set. I can't hardly imagine $2400 to install?? even at 500 to 1000 for install, it wouldn't be worth it to me just for a few mph and a different sound.. |

if you want to supercharge your 496 - do not use stock pistons
the perfect 496 supercharged engine should use at least forged pistons, forged crankshaft, allow heads and a special supercharger cam find them all here www.raylarengine.com |

Is that you Ray using a different screen name? The spot at the base of the riser that is flared to fit around turbulator, does that cause any flow restrictions? |

PS....Just what is the purpose of those 'turbolators' ?? I did remove all that other stuff though... :D Turbulator from my understanding traps and keeps condensation from re-entering the manifold. |
Re: 496 HO's...
Harper is right... Merc labels it as a turbulator in their drawings.... very easy to remove. I took mine out and it did allow me to pick up 200 rpm. Which now when WOT I will hit the limiter, when before I was just under it....
As far as real numbers for the CMI set up...... Every once in a while Boating magazine puts out their "Speedboat" issue..... the latest one I just got has an article entitled.... "Heads, You Win". They take a 22' Scarab with a 2005 496HO and install the CMI's on it. Stock set up had a best of 71.2 MPH. They installed the CMI's and saw 74.3MPH. 3.1 MPH pick up. Test driver said you could feel the boat had a little more grunt during acceleration as well. As far as the install, it look very easy. I would definately not pair for labor to get it done, and try it myself....... hope this helps. |
