I Got some Ilmors!!!

I just worked out a deal to buy a pair of new 625's. I'll let you know how they work out after I get them installed. I'm going from 525 efi to these Ilmors so I'm anxious to see what kind of performace gains I see. They are going in my 38 Fountain.

The dyno sheets say these are about 100 hp more per side than the 525's. Figure that and the 600 lbs in weight savings off the back and it should liven my 38 up a bit and still be turnkey.

The 525's weren't enough for me, and I'm afraid that if I whipple them to 750+ the drives won't hold up. The 625's seem just about right until there is another viable option.

But the thing that really sold me is the fact that Ilmor stands by their product, and they are taking a longterm approach to treating customers. I expect that by next winter they will have come out with an even higher HP variant of this engine, and when they do they will offer the opportunity for their existing customers to have their engines upgraded by the factory at a reasonable cost.

What really impressed me was that they said they didn't just want my business now, but that they wanted to still have it 10 years from now.

I'll keep you updated on how it works out.

I think im going to do the same thing. The headers dontline up with my exhaust though so i have to find out a way to make that work (might go with the new underwater exhaust). what drives are you running? any other upgrades?

Sweet. I imagine there are several folks here that will be interested in the final numbers between the two sets of mills. What were you seeing MPH-wise out of the 525's? And yes, what are you doing with the 525's?

Re: I Got some Ilmors!!!

im either doing ilmors or chiefs (top 2 front runners now), either way, my 525's w/ extended warranty until dec. 09 will be going so if anyone is interested e-mail me an offer. they have about 90 hours on them. XR short sportmasters may also be avail for the right price.

Congratulations on your new Ilmors. I have a set of MV10-625's in my 44 MTI and they have been the most reliable engines I have ever owned. They perform as advertised (625 bhp @ 5,800 rpm). I would highly recommend them to anyone who wants good performance and outstanding reliablity!

Re: I Got some Ilmors!!!

I am currently running XR's with imco shorties. Last year I bought a 2000 38Fountain fever without power or drives and had it repainted, all new interior put in, and 525's - one brand new and one with 50 hrs. I had new valve springs put in the one with 50 hours on it.

When the boat was first completed it ran with standard length sportmasters. The best on saw with that set up was 82ish, most of the time less. My X was too deep so at the end of the season I picked up a set of - 2 inch imco shorties and the boat really picked up speed I only made a couple runs with it before I put it up but I was seeing 86+.

If the Ilmors work out I won't have much need for the 525's. One person on the board has first dibs on them but if he goes with bigger power then I hope to instigate a huge bidding war for them :)

Re: I Got some Ilmors!!!

BTW, I put about 36 hours on the engines this year. I didn't get the boat back until the middle of July. So one has 36 hours and the other one around 90 - with new valve springs just 36 hrs ago.

No, these engines were originally shipped out as 550's and installed in a new cat with #6's. When Ilmor came out with the 625's they were shippped back to Ilmor and the internals were converted into 625's.

There wasn't much interest in a big cat with 6's and 625's so the boat sat for a long time. The dealership finally gave up on selling the boat with 625's and put in big power. They shipped these engines back to Ilmor where I got a great deal on them.

Re: I Got some Ilmors!!!

I had the same question but they said it would work. I guess if they don't then we'll just have to switch them.

Going to have to repaint the boat to match the motors. And then redo the interior to match the paint. :D

I wonder if anybody is working on superchargers for the Ilmors yet?I bet they would be a good candidate. Just think 250 hp on top of the 625 . that would be stout!!!

Nice set-up!!! I'm really interested in knowing what your boat will run with those motors. Don't forget to give us an update.
BTW are those out of that 37 Talon at Lake Cumberland Marine?

Chris288, I think I was the only Ilmor powered Velocity in the NYC Poker Run. We had a wonderful time and will be back this year. The Ilmors are fantastic engines and bullet proof. As mentioned Ilmor is second to none in the customer service department. I too will probably upgrade next year with the release of the next stage of power that is expected to be in the 700 to 725 range. And as usual I am sure until the testing is done to insure reliable power, we will not know what power that will be. Something to keep in mind for you changing out the 525's to Ilmors, you will most likely gain about about an inch in the way the boat sets in the water with the 700 lbs of removed weight. It is like getting a 1" shorty for free. Also, not to mention the added speed. Also I think you will get better or at least the same fuel economy that you now have with the 525's at least from my experience.
Good Luck with a great choice

Re: I Got some Ilmors!!!

Steet, what size is your velocity and what kind of speeds are you seeing?
How does that compare to the same boats with 525's?

Re: I Got some Ilmors!!!

Yea, he called today. I'm probably going to take the boat up there next week. He seems like he is really sharp on rigging.

Btw, he said something about "Tell Jeff to give you a great deal on those Herring Props because that's probably the size you'll need" :)

Re: I Got some Ilmors!!!

You said you got a deal on them, what have they been selling for?

Marginmn 02-23-2006 09:07 PM

Re: I Got some Ilmors!!!

I was quoted $35K per engine by some dealers - the lowest I found was $32,500 from a dealer. I got a great deal on these because I bought them directly from Ilmor and they don't have the BLING look of the new 6265s. They have the internals and that is what I was concerned with.

I figure if they release an updated version next year that are putting out 700+ hp then I"ll send then back for the update and have them dressed up then.

I think Bob had mentioned your place when I was thinking about buying Ilmors back in the fall. Have you done many installs on the Ilmors?
