"I Feel Like I'm Second Best To Your Boat"

This is what she said to me this weekend. Turned into a 2 hour "discussion" about whats in the future...I told her lots of boating :evilb: :evilb: It's not even summer yet and I'm already hearing this...although in her defense I was 3 hours late from working on the boat and we had somewhere to be, but it had to get done. I guess its Murphy's laws of boating...Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. And however long you think it will take, it will always take longer. Anyone else forced into these types of "discussions"?? I hope I'm not the only one.

Never hear that.

In fact, I hear just the opposite. "At least I know you're not in the bars chasing skirts."

I guy could have a lot worse hobbies.

Re: "I Feel Like I'm Second Best To Your Boat"

Old Toledo story goes:

Guy gets a boat.
The more time he spends on the boat, the more she b**ches.
The more she b**ches, the more time he spends on the boat.
She finally gives him the ultimato - the boat or me.
He keeps the boat and names it "Split Decision".

True story!

Re: "I Feel Like I'm Second Best To Your Boat"

Yeah I get it all the time about why I am on OSO :D :D , it's his fault he got me addicted. Like Fred's wife I like the fact that this boating hobby keeps him busy in the garage and close to home. Of course I am lucky I get to go along almost every time the boat goes out. I do feel for the women who are married to racers since they don't get to enjoy the ride.

How about when they want a new piece of furniture or whatever else? You say its not in the budget right now and they say" if it was for your boat, it would be in the budget".......Well of course it would. I cannot(do not want to) spend $4k right now on a sofa, but 4K for some new Herings? Open checkbook baby!!!!

Re: "I Feel Like I'm Second Best To Your Boat"

If I didn't love boating as much as he does, we would be divorced. However, another saving factor is that 13 years ago we moved to a place where the boat could be at home, so he would be at home, and I wasn't running food to him at the "boat shop" at 2 a.m. on a weeknight as I used to do. That would have caused a problem over time. I saw the problem developing and so did he. So we did something about it. I don't know if we would be having those "discussions", and don't want to think about it. I know that the move made things so much easier for both of us. It was a lifestyle commitment - I'm the one that searched like heck to find the right property for the barn. Ken is always "home" now, not in the house, but in the barn, otherwise known as Ken's playground. We love boating, but we love each other, and there is so little time to be together between work and all that other crap we all have to do everyday. Don't just slam her. If it the gal and the boat are both important, work together to make it work!

Been there done that... she's no longer with me. :p

My wife now, on the other hand.. she knew from the beginning what the deal was. I remember the first day we went out on the boat, if she hated it then it wouldn't have lasted.

She complained for a while how rough the ride was in my old scarab though. So, I went out and got a bigger boat. She wanted me to spend more time at home so I bought a house where I could park the boat along side. She wants me to buy her some things because I was spending so much on the boat, so I told her to get a paper route. Just kiddin......

It all works out, you just gotta find the right one! :drink:

I am very lucky . My wife has her hobby and I have mine. Both take up a lot of time and $$ and we both are understanding and supportive of each other.

Get your girlfriend a hobby. :D

Re: "I Feel Like I'm Second Best To Your Boat"

All I can say is do something so she doesn't make you choose between her and the boat. Take her on the boat and have a great time....maybe even just you and her and bring a little wine for some romance!! Make her feel like the boat is second to her, tell her she is perfect--and the boat needs work and requires maintenence. That will make her like the boat alot more. :D

Does she have a hobby? If not, GET HER ONE. Mine is a horse nut, I have work like hell to make enough to pay for both, but when I want to enjoy my side, she cooperates.

Keep reminding her you could be chasing split tails at the local bar, but instead you chase the wind on the water...

Granted, trying to get her involved is best, but at the end of the day, you have to have your sanity, and for me, that means a boat....

Without my sanity she would not want to be around anyway...

Re: "I Feel Like I'm Second Best To Your Boat"

My ex loves going out for a day on the water. She loves blasting around the lake WOT.
But I told her when I bought it that boat ownership is a lot of work. There's always something that needs tending to. I asked her to promise me that she would help maintain it. She did, and didn't. She made the promise and I take care of everything. I get no help in cleaning it or packing it away. She'll help load it and hook it to the truck, launch and retrieve, but beyond that, nothing.
She did try to complain about how much time I spend working on it. I said to her....You enjoy going out on it, right?
You like the fact that it's always clean, right?
You like the fact that it aways runs with no trouble, right?
Well if it dies out there we can't pull over to the curb and call AAA! It takes work to keep it running like this.
She never bothered me about it again.

Re: "I Feel Like I'm Second Best To Your Boat"

For those looking to get their wives more interested in boating......many have found enrolling their wives into local Power Squadron courses and club managment duties is the charm. Lots of other wives to brainwash them into liking the hobby. : )

Women typically like to take boating courses from someone other than their husbands, then get better exam grades to boast about. Also, once they learn something about boating themselves, they are 200% more comfortable with it.

I am fortunate my wife prefers to be sleeping on the boat rather than at the house. She used to travel for her job alot during the week, and told me "she would meet me on the boat" for the weekends. I don't think she saw the inside of our house for a couple of months!

Now she is the treasurer of a local yacht club and enjoys lording her power over me. : )
