Ran the test several times and the results were the same every time. Hard to beat the torque of the 275 for everyday use.

Wow... And not only that but it amazes me how freakin' quiet they are!?!? Walk by one (or two... or three...) running and all you hear is the splash of the water stream. As much as I love the roar of a marine motor, there is something to be said for that kind of performance AND quiet...

Yeah - we were stunned! We had jokingly bet a few beers before the match. We had all thought that the Verado would pull hard intiailly but the 300 would come around it on the big end.

Unfortunately, Mercury needs something for their HP market. The 275 verado would sink the back of my boat and similar boats. Obviously thats an exaggeration, but those motors are heavy as hell. Great for fish boats though. I am very interested to see how the 300xs performs. The 2.5's will always be the king of SS, they are just a little finicky for everyday use. Oil injection is a big plus too.

Mercury Racing's 250XS is closer to 275HP than it is to 250HP...from a competent source. It weighs about the same as a normal Opti (depending on midsection) and is about as economical (not to mention the upgraded gearcases). In fact, it will typically be more fuel efficient than a Verado and 250XS will run on 87 octane
