What is freeboard?

I hear this brought up a lot in the Apache 28/ Saber 28 threads.
What is it?

Thanks,

some funny but true answers, it is the depth of your cockpit from the floor to the top of the sides and helm. :drink:

The side of the hull measured from the top of the gunwale to the waterline.

If I fall of the boat tomorrow, will you still remember me?
Because you don't have much freeboard....
I could fall into the sea....
So don't you turn quite so sharply...
Or that splash you hear will be me....

When I saw you had no freeboard...
I shoulda worn a PFD.... A Pfdee eee eee eee ee e e ee eeee

Bad pic.
But must be four feet of freeboard.

Can't even see over the side if you sit in the back. :D

If you want more freeboard, it is because you want to be deeper in the boat. Pantera now cuts 4" or so out from under the bolster so you can stand a bit deeper in the boat. This is also why you see the bolster really stick out past a boats sheer line.
Here is a good pic of low freeboard.

The problem I have w/ this picture(of fountain and cig) is just that the fountains stern sits so low in the water.
This doesn't necessarily mean that you don't sit deep enough in the boat, which is what we are concerned about.

I agree, even though the technical term of freeboard is to the waterline most are concerned with how deep you are in the boat.

Re: What is freeboard?

In rough water it also makes a big difference when a big wave comes up behind you when you're moving slowly along.

I've been on a few boats, no names, that sit low in the water that got swamped and washed water over the swim platform, onto the sun pad and almost into the cockpit.

On one eventful trip the boat with low freeboard was taking waves from the beam and all the water was going into the vents and causing the motors to stall, it was like the motors were playing hot potato.

Everyone on board ran into the cabin and pulled out the ugly orange life jackets for the rest of the ride, were cold and soaking wet.

That's what I would consider "cockpit depth."

Actually, what I'm concerned with is how high a wave must be before it crashes over the side of my boat, but that's not really relevant.

free·board
1. Nautical. The distance between the water line and the freeboard deck of a ship.
2. The distance between normal water level and the top of a structure, such as a dam, that impounds or restrains water.

In all the boats mentioned thus far... I think it should be expensive board.

I looked it up too before I posted, but then where is freeboard measured?
I know beam should be measured at the widest point of the boat.

Plus I've seen some 28ft cigs(and others) that stern sits very low, but thats because there is too much damn weight in the rear.

Can I get more freeboard by getting rid of my 525efi and going to the ilmors? The weight should make me sit a little higher in the water?

And as far as a wave crashing over your boat?
A breaking 8ft wave will crash over a 38 fountain, cig and 41 apache if you are a sitting duck.

the definition i found said the freeboard is the height from the water to the lowest part of the gunwale....

actually It was a joke from another thread,,, regarding stupid questions you will get asked about your boat,, To Fountain owners,, hey is that boat sinking...

But, I would be willing to bet that more fountains take waves over the back and through the engine vents than any other Offshore boat..

OK... I'm down with that.
So the fountain in that pic may have lower freeboard than my 24 pantera had, but you would stand deeper in it.

So I guess I'll add to the main question here...
When mentioned on this board, what is usually meant by "freeboard"?
