The MercTrans was discontinued in 1982 and was used only in lower hp TRS applications.
From 1983-1993 they ran a Borg Warner 71C on the 330 and up to some 420's. The stronger (and @1" longer) BW 72C was behind the 420 and up.

To answer your question, from 1983 to 1993 (last year for the TRS) they all ran either a BW 71C or a 72C.

My 82 Donzi has a Merctran/Trs setup. I had to have it rebuilt when I bought it. I had an extra clutch disc put in, and the shaft clearanced. I've heard of people getting good service with up to 650 hp with these mods. Here's what some of the pieces looked like before the rebuild.

That's really where I was trying to go with this question.

Does the BW 71C look enough like a Turbo 400 with the valve body etc to be mistaken as one by a car guy who doesn't know what he's looking at in a boat?

Thanks

(I don't know what either look like, it was dark down there in my bilge and had lots of hoses on top of it)

Could possibly be an old B&M two speed. They were designed as a direct bolt-in for a Borg Warner.

More horsepower gets to the prop with the MercTrans than the Borg Warners. MercTrans only steals 6-10 hp where the BWs grab 18-22.
The BWs are heavier too.

the fmx trans and the turbo 4oo look nothing alike. the turbo 400 has a one piece bellhousing and transmission, The fmx has a seperate bell housing and transmission. Unless it was custom built I doubt that a 400 is in there

The Turbo 400 is one of the easiest transmissions to identify.
The shape of the pan is almost the shape of the state of Illinois, except backwards.
