My 7 foot 1 inch sail was 84 pounds after props took a chunk out of him. I am guessing yours weighed 85 to 100 pounds. I also cuaght mine in 120 feet of water, then he ran out to 600 feet. Took me an hour and a half to reel him in on 18 pound test. You are lucky to have caught such a nice sized fish! I cought this a couple of weeks ago off Stuart, about 8 miles offshore in 140' of water. It was a bit on the small side but he sure was lively. It didn't take long to get him in on a Penn 30VSW with 20lb mono. We grilled up a bunch of Mahi the same evening.
I keep my 50 Bertram in Stuart diring the winter. It's only 6 or 7 miles out to the stream!!! We have been seeing dozens of sails free jumping lately. I can't wait to fly back down in a couple of weeks. |

Nice DJD, I will be back down to FTL in a couple of weeks also. Hope to hook the wife on a sail.
Sorry dreamer, not sure what records you are looking at. I am an IGFA member and have the record book right here.....biggest Atlantic sail is 135 pounds off Nigeria by Ron King. Chris Martin caught a 105 pound sail off Key West on 8lb test in 1993. The biggest Pacific sailfish was 210 lbs on 50 lb test in 1990. My guess is that Becca's fish was longer than she is! I am 6'3" and here is my 84 + pound, 7 foot one inch fish caught off Miami, the morning after the OSO/FPC/Cig boat show parties a couple of years ago........ |

Re: Caught a sail, yeah baby!!
Would have released it, but the fish decided to charge the props and cut off the line....that worked, but he also lost a big chunk of his side. Fish was collected floating dead at the GPS co-ordinates by another boat. You can see me holding his fin together where the prop chopped it, the other side of the fish was messed up by the props.
Our guy Ryan tried to snag the fish by diving in fully clothed with a boat hook, and when he was gone from sight underwater in the bloody water, I thought he was dead too!! |
