Question for everyone

I am looking at ways to grow my business. I have an idea that I beleive makes sense, but I need some input friends..

1. How many of you are in the market for a new boat trailer?
2. What brand?
3. Have you contacted a trailer dealer regarding the purchase of a trailer?
4. How many would buy one if they could get a KILLER deal on a new trailer, but will just hang on to their current trailer for a while?

Thanks in advance everyone!!

I think the problem with trailer sales is that only a select group use them often enough to justify the price of a nice one. I have a Myco aluminum for the Gun with all the stuff on it and I've used it MAYBE 5 times since new.... 3+ years ago. I wouldn't even have a trailer if it wasn't included in the price of the boat. They are a pain in the ass to store when they aren't under your boat, and MOST paople can borrow one for the few times they need it (straight bottoms). This is why the trailer gets barely any value when people are shopping for used boats that have a trailer available (aside from hydraulic trailers, etc).

You'd have to really be selling them at smokin prices to get alot of action I would think, but where's your margin when that's the case?

Re: Question for everyone

eat me, gentlemen. (you know who you are)

I'm not really talking about Myco trailers. Basically, if you were gonna buy a trailer right now, who would call? where would you look?

Re: Question for everyone

1. Not yet, but maybe later.
2. Doesn't matter - A reasonably nice quality brand at a reasonable price shall do nicely. Must be aluminum.
3. No.
4. Define Killer, then see #1.

Re: Question for everyone

I am thinking about replacing my trailer for my TG.

If I do I would call myco. I don't use my trailer a lot but when I do a don't want problems. Right now my trailer that came with the boat last year has done the following...blown 2 tires while being towed to me when I bought it ( i replaced all 6 with quality trailer tires)

Now the brakes have quit working (understand that it didn't come with brakes to begin with and were added later) and when the boat was water tested a few weeks ago the rubber bow stop flew off when they loaded it. When coming up a steep ramp the middle and rear tire rub together until on a flatter slope.

All this on a 2 year old trailer. POS. will make a nice yard trailer but worthless for any real towing.

I also had a 2 Mannings in the past and had no problems with them.

What I want is aluminum, drive guards, electric over hydraulic, good support, not just 2 bunks and some rollers. Maybe a tool box an a place for at least 1 spare.

My myco under my pantera fit like a glove and towed and stopped nice.

Killer meaning you couldn't find the same (or like quality) trailer at a better price. Period. Maybe 1% of the time someone would have a leftover, etc, but for the most part, no way.

My marina is a dealer for 3 or 4 manufacturers of nice trailers. One of them is a price leader, but still a nice value in a trailer. I think I can sell new trailers very cheap. Cheaper than anyone, in fact.

The catch is

1. All of them are ordered but can be completed in 2-4 weeks.
2. Tight terms. 50% deposit, 50% upon delivery. Severe cancellation charges.

Ok Bill.... here we go:

1. Limit Vodka intake to a a gallon a week.

2. Stop hanging around with Cash Bar.

3. Start keeping regular hours.

4. Create a prospect list and work it.

5. Partner with a finance company. They are the only ones who make money in the marine industry anyway.

6. Expand into additional brands. Like PrinceCraft Pontoon boats and maybe houseboats.

7. Relocate to a body of water larger than a "Creek."

8. Secure websites for "Buyaprincecraft" and "Buyahouseboat."

9. Consider hiring a custom canvas guy to make biminis. Biminis are the new thing. The sun is a killer.
Besides... a bimini for a Pontoon boat is like a grand. :D

been very happy with my Myco for the past year. I would only look at trailers now if someone made a lightweight inexpensive tilt trailer so it woudl be easier to tow are ft lauderdale.

How do you get your boat back and forth to OK ?? Or is that the only time you do use it

Re: Question for everyone

My current trailer is old, but reasonably functional.(see oso garage). At some point I'd like to have the newer features- disc brakes, better bunking system and drive protection. I use my trailer a lot but not for many miles (lots of 60 mile round trips). Short answer, yeah I'm interested- Jeff

Re: Question for everyone

ours has been on its trailer for abuot 2.5 years after it sunk with the exception of 2 quick test runs, so the manning has done pretty good, but if it werent for restoring our boat we would never have use for one with a boat this size. if we were to buy another trailer it would definately be aluminum gooseneck, but wouldnt be a myco or anything custom or special b/c of the $$$.....on the other hand my 18 check trailer which we actually do use is pretty beat...if you can sell me a new alum. for 800 ill take it  :drink:

I hire a driver to come get it. He brings a trailer with him because there is nowhere trustworthy to store my trailer down there for 7-8 months.

TwinStep,

Do you primarily use the boat in fresh water? Want to sell your trailer?? I'll trade you my steel Manning plus $$$. I boat only in salt water and do not want to continue to put that on the Manning, it is a shame.

What about selling smaller runabout boats? Also what about selling lots of boat accesories? I try to do that in dealership i work for. But trailers are a great idea to make a ton of money but also you should keep a few in stock. Just my two cents.

1. Yes I'm looking for one now.
2. Theres a gazillion so I just keep searching the net.
3.Not yet.
4. Hell yes.

Need a trailer for my 26' Scarab and would like some of the nice stuff, aluminum hopefully, tri-axle, disc brakes. Mainly it is just to move the boat to the ramp and back to the yard. I doubt I ever take it on the highway. Got anything around 3K :D

I am currently looking for a trailer and would be very interested to see what you can do. I want an aluminum triple axle, 18,000# capacity minnimum, ss brakes, for a 44' boat. I have not decided on the brand and only talked to a few but have an idea of what it will cost me so I would be interested in hearing what you can do.

Re: Question for everyone

I think your margin percentage on a trailer might look good but the hassles would suck. The big score is when you sell a new boat on a new trailer rather than trying to sell a new trailer to a guy with an old boat. I bought a Nextrail from the manufacturer last year and the experience was great. They built it with no deposit and had it done in 10 days. But since they are the manufacturer then they could easily reconfigure the trailer for another boat if I didn't show up whereas if you ordered it and the customer wasn't happy/ didn't show then you would be stuck.

I think more money could be made renting trailers for short periods of time since no one is doing that here in FL. I know plenty of people that lift/ dry store and they are always griping about having no mobility for poker runs/ repair work.
The trailers would have to be high quality/ durable and adjustable for different uses. I know 2 people that bought trailers last year to move their boats away from hurricanes then sold the trailers after the storms were gone because they couldn't store them when the boats got put back on the lifts. I think the trailers would pay for themselves in a short period of time and maintenance would be minimal annually. I think someone would pay $500 to rent a quality trailer for a weekend/ out of area poker run.

If I was buying right now I would call Manning again. I rate them 2nd to Myco at a much easier price. If you search the folks that have owned a Manning they have nothing bad to say. I did use a Hi-Tech aluminum pulled for a friend and have never seen anything as bad! The bolts that held it together backed out and the break lines rubbed through it also flexed so bad he had to add supports to the front.

Re: Question for everyone

I MIGHT be interested in a triple axel Aluminum for the Nordic, but since I have a trailer now, it would have to be a killer deal.
Interesting idea.

i currently have a Myco for my 35 Fountain but it needs new paint and some updating. What i have been thinking about is just selling the Myco and finding a new trailer, maybe aluminum. So buyafountain i am shopping but keep in mind my situation as noted above.

Does anyone else have any thoughts or opinions as to what my better route is?

Thanks

I would be interested. I bought a used trailer for my 38' Scarab. It is in bad shape. When I bought it I was buying the boat and it was all that was available on a short notice. I am in the market for a new trailer probably an aluminum one, triple axle, with brakes on 2 or 3 axles. You can e-mail me direct at: [email protected]
