My Worst Boating Day Yet

Had a sea trial yesterday as part of a survey on a 115' Norship. Gorgeous yacht, 25' beam, 1800 hp MTU diesels, 2 generators, all the whistles and bells, worth about $4 million.

Very rough seas yesterday, the mega-yacht with her Niaid stabilizers handled it beautifully and was amazing in every respect.

About three miles out we lose power in one engine, then a few seconds later the other. Then both generators shut off about 30 seconds from each other. We start rocking so violently from side-to-side that the interior of the boat starts self-distructing. We can't figure out why everything stopped because you can't make your way down to the engine room. There was no power to lower the anchors, so we finally lowered one manually to get the boat at least pointed in the right direction.

For three hours we bobbed along like a cork. I was okay the first hour, but I became so seasick I prayed for the Good Lord to let me die. Finally SeaTow came out with two boats and brought us back in.

Turns out the fuel transfer pump failed and couldn't refill the day-tanks that we were running from. We had 700 gallons on board, but couldn't get it to the tanks it needed to be in.

I have been queasy before, but never as ill as I was yesterday.
I was considering changing my line of work!

I guess it could have been worse! I never thought about losing anything from the bottom end.
My stomach was sore this morning after what I put it through.

Sounds like quite a day...I like to think that for every bad day on the water, there are a thousand great days. In that case, you should have better luck the next time out!

I grew up on the water so I always had pretty good sea legs and dont get motion sickness. But. The closest I came was after surfacing from a dive, my stomach started to get a little queesy while bobbing on the dive boat till we got moving. Drinking water helped. They say its common from breathing the compressed air and having the salty taste in your mouth..

Just to get back on the horse...had a short sea trial on a 330 SS Formula and a longer one on a 33' Coastal yesterday. No problems, but we didn't stop for 4 hours and bounce around either.
Wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

It's amazing that a 4 million dollar yacht could leave you feeling so helpless and all over a stupid pump. Was it just a bad pump or was there a problem getting power to the pump?

The diesel engine surveyor suspects sabotage from the engineer who was not available for this sea trial! What a disaster! You wouldn't believe how much damage was done to the furnishings. The galley looked like a bomb went off. The circuit breaker for the fuel tranfer pump was BEHIND a panel that had to be completely removed for access.

I am surprised there is no redundancy for the transfer system on a yacht that size. If I had something capable of crossing oceans, I would want redundancy in all systems.

Lucky is wan't a plane... I'll bet if most of us were getting "tossed around" on 115' vessel we'd get sick..... Even the tough guys...

If there was/is nobody on board knows about it. The captain and 1st mate were clueless. What a day for the engineer to be missing.

I know that feeling only too well. The first time I ever went deep sea fishing it happened to me. My dad was stationed at the Navy Mine Defense Lab in Panama City. On the weekends, they would take one of the workboats out fishing. It was probably about a 50 footer, with a top speed of 9 knots. It was rough as hell! I was literally rolling around on the rear deck, like a turd. I would have had to rally in order to die. I knew I was in trouble when I saw the captain come out and go to the rail! We ran out about 20 miles out, fished for about twenty minutes, before the mutiny started! It was special to see some old dude puke his false teeeth up in a bucket! After the mutiny, we were headed back, and I knew at 9 knots, I was going to be subjected to two more hours of the misery. :( :( :(

Re: My Worst Boating Day Yet

The only time I ever got sick was on my honeymoon cruise. Really strange because as long as I was above deck and could see the horizon there was no problem. As soon as I went below the very subtle rocking of the boat would just throw me. My new wife thought I was trying to avoid her. (That may be true now but wasn't then. :D :D )

Dramamine finally helped after about two days.

There is no sickness worse than sea sickness. Its makes you too weak to even jump overboard. Only once for me; troop ship to Korea in the '50's...

Today while surveying a 41' SeaRay we passed one of the SeaTow boats that towed us in on my ill-fated voyage. He yells at me and says: "Hey, you look much better today!"
