For the same reason that someone would rather run over the giant ant hill with the lawnmower (riding mower especially) instead of taking the time to pour the ant killer stuff on the mound and watering it.

My wife and I came up on a dead whale about 3 miles off LI's south shore near east rockaway inlet. Thought it was capsized boat. Circled a few times and left. It did smell bad.
