How many fish off their sterndrive performance boats?

I love performance boats, but like fishing too. Hence I developed custom, removable modifications to my Sonic SS30 to make fishing (and lounging) on the engine hatch easy and safe. Have caught lots of fish from it, and have avoided ANY permanent fish smells by being careful.

I have seen quite a few folks fishing from their sterndrive performance boats off Long Island N.Y., and wonder just how many here do the same.

Thanks in advance for your response.

No fishing allowed - we've had a cigarette, skater, baja, apaches - no fish hooks ever!!

magnuman 02-03-2002 04:32 PM

No Fishing ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But plenty of trolling!!!!!!!!! :) :)

Intolerant1 02-03-2002 04:45 PM

Fishing, yes. Catching fish, nope.
There is a fine line between fishing and standing on your swim platform holding your pole.

I have one of those fold up portable rod and reels in a bag that I keep on the boat. We have a favorite cove that we overnight at and when you wake up early in the morning the fog is laying just over the water and the fish are breaking. I cannot stand it and have to throw a line in. No serious fishing though.

Ho Ho "I cannot stand it..". That is what happens here when the bluefish and stripers are attacking huge thrashing schools of baitfish on the surface, amidst hords of seagulls and terns attacking them.

It does not matter what kind of boat someone has, it is basic instinct to join the feeding frenzy. <gg>

Oh did I happen to mention that I talked to the owner of the 42 Scarab last night.. seems he is just a little tired of that tub....isn't that just a shame...

Now don't get carried away with this little bit of info.......that boats a bit of a jump for me........NOT the driving it....but the owning part of it scares me a bit.....

I mean Damn I don't even have anything to tow that pig with.......I'd have to sell the truck to get the boat.....BUT then I would have to sell the boat to get a truck big enough to tow it...

TomR 02-03-2002 09:46 PM

What the hell is the matter with you??? Fishing off of your go-fast boat!!!!

Scott 02-03-2002 10:05 PM

I'd never even think of it.

SHAKEN Not Stirred 02-03-2002 10:15 PM

No fishing off a GO-Fast Boat !!!!

Actually I think it's illegal in 46 states.

It's only allowed in Arkansas & Alabama, Mississippi & Louisiana !!!!!.

Airpacker 02-04-2002 08:21 AM

My power play was actually quite well suited to fish from, big swim platform and all,the cat is a little different story though so its tin boat fishin from now on.

C_Spray 02-04-2002 09:44 AM

Hmmm....Do I fish off of my go-fast? Let's see:

5. Boat loan bigger than my mortgage. (Priorities!)
4. Boat still good as brand-new.
3. All-white hull.
2. All white vinyl and UltraLeather upholstery.
and finally....
1. Cleanliness-obsessed, not-afraid-to-kick-anybody's-ass girlfriend.

I think NOT.

DanL 02-04-2002 12:23 PM

I fish one out of the cooler from time to time.

FloridianSon 02-04-2002 01:16 PM

My kinda guy :) If only I could talk the wife into #5.

No fishing here, that's what the grocery store is for

C_Spray 02-04-2002 02:20 PM

Oh - and:
6. The lures/bait won't stay in the water/on the hook at 80 mph. (Although, if you DO hook a fish at that speed, it takes all the fight right out of 'em. Along with their jaws.)

candyman35 02-04-2002 10:11 PM

The only fish allowed on my boat are
Swedish Fish. :D
There is a 10-meter Fountain in Chicago with fishing poles mounted to the transom. It makes you want to cry.

ROGMAN 02-05-2002 09:13 PM

This is a "No Chitter" True story about fishing from a go fast boat.
While running in a poker run last August as a co-pilot in my buddies 22 Donzi, I experienced a truly fishy story. We were cruising along about 65 MPH, the weather was perfect, Bay was calm, Boat was clean, and we were rocking. All of a sudden I see a fish jump up out of the water in front of us, thought to myslef, "Hey, that's pretty cool". Then my thoughts turned dark....next thing I know, I digging fish scales out of my mouth, and the swim pad of the boat is covered in blood - Both mine and the fish!!! Now I'm a good size boy (6,4" - 250 lbs)and have been in my fair share of scurmishes, but I'm here to tell you, I have NEVER been hit so hard in my life. I literly got by butt kicked by a 12" fish. Later that day I went to the doctors office, knowing I needed stiches. Before the Doctor could treat me he and all the nurses had to stop laughing.
So here is the moral to the story - NEVER, ever attempt to fish from a go fast boat, at least one that is going 65MPH. :) :)

obnoxus 02-05-2002 10:29 PM

Isnt there a law agaist such activities !!!???

CBR 02-05-2002 11:11 PM

Wow Jon B! Could have been worse I guess. Hope you recovered fully.

How did the blood end up on the swim platform?

While I was idling in the NYC Poker Run formation last year, waiting for the fog to lift, my fish finder went crazy, showing a huge school of bait under my boat. I knew there had to be stripers after em, so I broke out the fishing rods and sat in the fighting chair mounted on my engine hatch.

I was right next to Wild Child, a great looking Outerlimits from Chicago. They were all dressed up in Kiss outfits, I was fishing off my Sonic. Hey, a typical day in NYC.

I fish all the time off my Sonic and have caught lots of fish. I have not caught THE TUNA or THE MARLIN yet off it, but I am working up to that.

OkieTunnel 02-06-2002 01:18 AM

Fishing from a hot boat  Now I will admit, I commonly can be found (As Intolerant1 said) "standing on the swim platform holding my pole"...But thats because I am pissing!!! Now, Running jugs...Thats different ;)

ROGMAN 02-06-2002 08:28 PM

CBR - The blood on the swim pad was both mine and the fish exploded. My son was in the back, he picked up the guts of the fish off the pad.
Did make a full recovery, thanks for asking.

Crazyhorse 02-06-2002 08:32 PM

A couple years ago I saw a Cary 50 with a bunch of shortarm downriggers hanging off the back and sides up in Pentwater Michigan. Craziest thing I ever saw.
