Looking for surface drives

I am looking for a pair of surface drives Arneson or a pair of Kaama's in good shape , need everything for install , drives ,steering , trim rams,trannys..any help would be appreciated..... :) :)

puder 10-27-2001 09:30 PM

i had alead on a pair of no drop box drives a while ago. ASD 1821 in line units. You would have to use a tranny that has a drop box biult in. I hav eto see if i can find the info on it. I called about them and got some pictures and theylooked good. Unfortunatly I am not looking to do that kind of project anymore.

puder 10-27-2001 09:33 PM

also contact rik wimp at twin disc he usually has leads on used drives. If not he can set you up with new hardware or parts for ethudes drives.

Andrew Corn 10-27-2001 09:54 PM

Just for my own curiosity, are you planning on putting those on a 40' Excalibur?

Drew

whoosurdadi 10-27-2001 09:56 PM

that would be great if you could locate that info . I will call rik and see if he knows of any . I had talked with tom about the ones in classifieds but they sold why I was decieding . thanks for the input :)

whoosurdadi 10-28-2001 07:32 AM

drew , yes I am planning on putting them on a 40ft.Excalibur.

Payton 10-28-2001 09:05 AM

Here is an other option. The PSI, Pulse Drive. Power boat and hotboat had a little blurb about them a few years ago and I sent for some info. It is a very sleek looking unit., it is a trimable surface drive. I know they raced them some. I haven't heard much about them in the last 2 years.

The are made in Dearfield Beach FL
phone # 954 725 111

whoosurdadi 10-28-2001 09:34 AM

thanks Payton, I thought they were out of business , I will give them a call see what they offer.

mjuwalters 10-28-2001 09:55 AM

Excalibur Hawk I do not think the kammas would be a good choice due to the lack of parts avalible. But they should be cheap. Check around, should be able to find a pair of non dropbox arnesons for a decent price. Goodluck

puder 10-28-2001 06:32 PM

i think i found them on a posting here. not sure though. I do know of 1 drive that was for sale in FLA. Everything that was listed in the old classifieds has sold.

Rik 10-28-2001 07:22 PM

What is the power you are planning on using in this boat? Diesel or Gas?

Contact www.arneson-industries.com and see which drive will be appropriate with your engine power and email them off their site.

This should speed up the process of getting the correct sized drives.

whoosurdadi 10-28-2001 07:40 PM

I am currently running 540 cubic inch chevys planning on adding 10-71 blowers this winter. looking for arneson asd-8 in-line drives. :)

puder 10-28-2001 07:50 PM

i though you had merc 420s and were thinking about building 540s????

Rik, thanks for all your help. Seeing as that my engine needs some work and I am plannign on selling the boat in the spring I won't be upgrading to an ASD. Thanks for all your help.

whoosurdadi 10-28-2001 08:22 PM

Puder , I have merc hp 575's which are 540 ci.Was thinking of selling , then wife talked me into keeping and doing blowers and surface drives this winter. she really likes this boat. :) :)

Andrew Corn 10-28-2001 08:33 PM

Have you given any thought to the rotations issues?

Drew

whoosurdadi 10-28-2001 09:28 PM

As in unfore seen issues?? or to turn props in or out ?? as for prop rotation not sure . Is there something I am missing or forgeting??

puder 10-28-2001 10:07 PM

that is a big heavy boat, low speed handling is gonna be pretty crappy on it with surface drives. ESPECIALLY in reverse.

puder 10-28-2001 10:08 PM

props are also gonna be pricey, you will be using either SSM VI or custom props like the rolla 6 bladers.

Andrew Corn 10-29-2001 06:41 AM

"As in unfore seen issues?? or to turn props in or out ?? as for prop rotation not sure . Is there something I am missing or forgeting??"

As in running a reverse rotation engine for Arnesons or making other arrangments to achieve opposite rotating props."

You might want to call John Ingle of Ingle Marine in Clearwater as to the handling aspects of the boat. In the early 80's we put surface drives on several boats for Jerry Burton, Cigarette, and Craig Barrie. They were a 38' Cigarette, 38' Scarab, and I believe one of Burton's Excaliburs.

The Cigarette would not trim and was therefore not acceptable, the Scarab w/Kaamas was a handful when coming off plane and would not steer very well (flipped it once) and I'm not sure of the performance of the Excalibur.

We did put Arneson on a 41' Cigarette with diesel Cats that ran pretty good and eliminated the problem of breaking drives.

Handling problems around the dock were overcome with some patience and experience.

Excaliber Hawk:

I like the Pulse Drive a lot, it is simple, cheaper and a LOT better when docking. I beleive they did an Excalibur before so they can tell you more about the performance.

Gary Anderson 10-29-2001 10:07 AM

Andrew's got a point. Only the ASD6 comes in standard (chain drive) and reverse (gear drive) rotation.
There is a reduction gear tailstock used for velvet drives that provides for reverse rotation. I think it's either the 1.88 or 1.91:1. They're normally used in cruisers and I'm not sure of the HP rating on the reduction. It does sound a lot easier than grinding a cam, etc. for reversing engine rotation.

Excalibur , The Kaamas will not handle that kind of power .The problem is the trans .I had them on a 40' formula and they were great ! But you can't put more then maybe 600hp in them .
There is a guy in New Jersey that has a 39' Sutphen with twin 900's and Arnesons and it works great ! I Have seen several Sutphens this way and they work good . Like they said engine rotation is an issue. I have older 1600 series arneson on my cat and they both turn the same way so one engine has to turn opposite . Newer arneson drives are avilible in oposite rotation . depending on drives and props shafts ,Arneson has there own shaft spline that is very hard to find props for (I think 15 spline ) They do come with speed master type shafts also . Get ones with 19 or 26 spline .19 spline is the small shaft #3-4 speed master ,and the 26 spline is large shaft #5-6 . You can find a lot of used 19 and 26 spline props for sale from $1000 up . And if you get the 19 spline shaft you can buy adaptors to use 26 spline props if needed . With that boat you will need 4 blades . Or even 5 if you can find them . Don't use 3 blades .They don't have enough surface . A friend of mine has a 40' Excalibur . Nice boat !! Good luck

whoosurdadi 10-30-2001 09:51 PM

Thanks guy's for all the input .. I think I should put somemore thought into this project.. any body have any ideas?? any and all help would be appreciated ...

Rik 11-05-2001 01:04 PM

The new ASD8's come in RH and LH Rotation and also have the same propeller spline as the Mercury SSM#6 Drives.

This eliminates the need for Opposite Rotation motors and bastard propellers.

You will need a reduction in the driveline somewhere, as the boat is too large for a 1:1 with a gas engine.

Your choices are: the new ASD8 Drop Box Drive, or a marine gear with built in reduction/rotation. The later consumes more power from your engine, and has a power limit as well as an rpm input limit.

Excaliber Hawk:

Dr.Santiago is right psi did a 45 excaliber about 1 year ago with 300 diesels. it look and worked great even better than the bravos it had on it at low and high speed.

If you call Harry at PSI I am shure can let you talk to the owner of the excaliber with the PSI's drive

PSI number is 1 954 788 0810

surface drive and deisels would be cool.

Run fast all day anto not worry about blowing up a big $$$ custom BBC. It woudl also be more economical than running two huge gas engines.

On the downside. I amnto a big fan of teh way diesel smells when burt. Ther eis just soemthign abotu teh scnet of a HUGE HP gas engine burning fuel!!! Butdiesels with SD are pretty frikkin neat.

Check with Weismann AKA Traction
Products 909-645-4064.

Another person to check with is
Earel Lanier
Lanier Marine in Dania Fl.
He has a bunch of #8 Drop Boxs.
Or Better yet why not buy Chuck Norries's old 46ft Scarab with 3208
Cats and #8 drop box's.
Its still in great shape, Only problem is its in the British Virgin
Islands "Tortola".
I could get YA a good deal. Mike J.

Sean 11-06-2001 03:49 PM

Paul Fiore's got a 37 Outerlimits with 3208s(I think) and Arneson drives hangin off the back...with two speed transmissions in between...great boat...and what a rooster tail!!

JIM H 11-06-2001 06:36 PM

PULSEDRIVE 12-17-2002 05:28 PM

I'm a new member on OSO and am please to see the discussion related to the Pulse-Drive. This would be a great application for our drives.
Ball park list price for a Dual Drive, 2x Huber upgraded Trans and counter rotating props for this boat up to 800hp would be about $30,000.00 with a five year Drive warranty
If you would like to contact me direct my # is 954 788 0810

I have a line on a new ASD-8... in the box with everything....

pop me an e-mail.. [email protected]

NJScarab 12-17-2002 09:33 PM

If I am not mistaken with the PSI drive you can use bravo props, that would be a huge savings....

X-Rated30 12-17-2002 10:51 PM

I have to assume you are NOT intending to race this boat. If that is accurate, you are on the right track. Surface drives simply offer more "drive bang" for the "HP dollar". If you are going to race there are too many other issues involved to address here.

I disagree with the post on the lack of Kaama drive parts -- Parts are everywhere. BOOT has the manual, and you can find 90% of the parts without problems. Just don't break a housing (= REAL $$$ -- still probably less than any Mercruiser product that can do the same job, though.) You can change drive rotation with trannys and those can be beefed up to handle mucho HP. Archer Marine can get you all of the parts, and there is another company in the Mid-West that reconditions and still puts these on boats. PM me if you need the name.

Pulse drives are still around and I have never heard anything bad about them.

Weissman drives look good on paper, but I don't know much about them.

Arnesons are the industry standard for surface drives, and I would think they could put together a package for any pleasure application if you hit them up right.

There is a cheap fountain for sale with surface drives - I think it would be a good candidate to part out.
