I had a 1995 22 Scarab and put a ZZ-502 in it. Ran a 27" Mirage and would do upper 70's if you had the balls to stay in it. Chine walked after about 70. You could drive through it but you had to stay on top of it. Definetly couldnt hold it for long at these speeds. Up to 70 however it was rock steady. I had Eddie Marine exhaust with the tail pipes to minimize reversion. The boat really needed external hydraulic streering with all the chine walking at speeds. My current boat has it and I can tell you I will never go without it again. Never had a problem with the engine mounts. My boat came with a 454 so it was designed for big block torque.
Good luck and be safe. Bring her up to speed slowly to see how she feels.

Re: 502 in my 96' 22 Scarab
Wow... well alrighty. I have spent a fair amount of time with CPP and others (Fred was not around) on the phone talking about Hydro steering. Looks like with my light weight boat that I can get away with a single ram system and now I am deciding between an add on system (I am told that it would be fine with my light boat) or a full system (alway better then the paritial) there is 1k difference in price... Guys I am in the Army... I am going to Iraq at the end of the year... I want to build the boat so I can ride it this year.. not wait till I can afford it two years from now when I return
Any thoughts?
Motor mounts... Ok, how can I find out what offshore motor mount I need for my 22 Scarab (before I pull the Mercruiser 330)?
Exhaust... ok... best bang for buck (Remember I am on an Army budget) what are the best exhaust manafolds? Any thoughts on Revolution Marine's manafolds?

You want to use it now? Then don't f' with it.
Drop in the new motor, w/ new mounts if so desired.
Do the rest when you have time.
And do a full hydro system, and i'd do double ram after you see how the boat handles, you don't have to go 70-80mph.
No one said speed is cheap.
And I'd leave the engine alone. Look for used stainless marine manifolds, and buy when u can find them right.
Get out and enjoy it before you find yourself overseas.

1st, THANKS YOU for your service to our country! The onlt problem with a 1/2 hyro steering system is there will still be play in the steering because the cable will still be there to the actuater. Your drive will be strong because fo the ram steering it but quick liitle steering inputs, which you will need while up on the hull's pad is what you will benefit by going full hydro steering. Also I think if you go 1/2 hydro you can upgrade the helm to full hydro...I'd check with your supplier though.

If you're satisfied cruising @ 3200 RPM and topping out @ 4700-4800 RPM every now and then, the stock pushrods, lifters, cam, springs and rockers will last a while. The exhaust is also adequate for a while. But, if on the other hand you want to run hard a little more than sometimes, the lifters, springs, rockers, ( new rocker studs will be required ) may need some attention. These are not necessarrily "increased horsepower" items but rather "reliability" items for higher RPM duty. Many different exhaust systems are usually available here on OSO at great prices used. In my opinion any aftermarket system minus the water passage through the riser manifold joint is a step up from the stock Merc.
You may regret not having full hydraulic steering if you run much at 70mph +. Sounds like a lot of fun ahead for you !
On the other hand, drop it in and go.
