On Win95 and later, Scandisk is ran after boot before the Windows startup if you didn’t shutdown Windows properly (i.e. Start -> Shutdown) or if Windows detected a disk I/O error the last time you ran it. It will continue to attempt to run each time you reboot until you let it finish.

My hunch is you have a disk error that Windows detected since it appears to be running a full scan (you said it takes forever). It’s trying to identify and mark any bad sectors on the drive so that Widows doesn’t write any data to them. Once it completes it shouldn’t run automatically again unless: 1) you don’t shut down Windows properly 2) another error is detected or 3) it runs as a scheduled task in Windows (as others have mentioned).

I like the message that reads, "to avoid seeing this screen again, remember to shut down Windows properly". Thanks Mr. Gates, if the damn thing didn’t lock up on me I wouldn’t have had to pull the plug.

Good Luck,
-Chris

Oh yeah, regarding the "insert bootable media" error on the other computer, there could be a number of reasons. When it crashed, what exactly happened (lockup, GPF, drive error)?

Yeah Gordo, I've seen your tools. One metric crescent wrench, a screwdriver (flat head no less), and a hammer. No, I think I'll just throw it away!! Same thing as sending it to you!

As for the one I'm on now, I let the scandisc run. Started at noon, just got "done" now. 7+ hours. It ended with the statement: "out of memory" Whatever that means. Took about 5 minutes just to get on the internet too. Guess I'm screwed. Gonna have to find another computer I guess. Or just put up with the incredibly long log ins, etc...
