I was there for 5 weeks in 1986. I had a blast, but can not testify as to real estate prices. Is Rick's still around? It used to be a pretty fun bar across from Sloppy Joe's.

Sunset Key Resort did not exist back then.
It is a late mid 90's developement.
Except for having the on island food and beverage services I would think the nightly rate could be applied to a weekly rental of a private home with docks and some with small boats in other parts of the Keys.
Relax and be able to really go native do the locals bar and food scene. The other keys have so much to offer that most people do not know of or have seen.

Its a nice place to stay when you want to relax from Key West with just a short shuttle. The ferry can be a pain, waiting for it and if renting a car parking becomes a issue. Some of the B&Bs just off Duval have nice courtyards for relaxing and parking for cars but you won't have the sunset.

We stayed at a B&B at the end of Duval...2nd to last place on Duval actually. We walked everywhere...no big deal we are young enough...good way to burn off some alchohol too....
Anyways, I'm just trying to justify blowing that much cake for a week versus going out of country somwhere tropical..

If the choice is between Sunset Key and out of the country then GO out of the country. In my opinon especially this time of year..for that kind of money you can rent some great house in the island for longer than a week.
St Marteen the..Turks and Cacios..Bahamas..Central America.
The only time I have not ever enjoyed K.W. was a trip during the end of June thr mid July...HOT HOT HOT and the fishing sucked! The fish even left town the water was so warm..but no big crowds.
