Re: Vacation ideas
Tip if you rent a boat. Bring ALL the boating stuff you think you might need. We brought one hundred feet of rope and a ton of camping gear. the boat had one two foot length of rope. I ended up using alot of our stuff including the rope to lash the boat to the undersized trailer they gave us by mistake. Still was a great trip and no problems with the boat.
Oh yeah, no cabin door either, they remove them before people wreck them. We overnighted one night in the boat and used our packed plastic sheet and some of JC's duct tape to seal the door against the 40 temp drop in 24 hours.
Houseboats are useless unless you have a lot of time, don't mind being passed by everybody, and tow a 17 foot runabout to get into the side channels towering hundreds of feet above you.
Bring a GPS, you WILL get lost otherwise, and the boats don't have them.
Have a great trip and post pictures if you go. We also drove 2,500 miles through the various deserts on that trip. Lake Powell was the highlight. Grand canyon is very close and was second in my opinion. Before we got to Cha canyon, we refueled at Dangling Rope marina, on a barge in the middle of nowhere. We went in April and saw about ten other boats on a lake with more shoreline than the entire east coast of the U.S. If you like camping and hiking, you will love lake Powell. We could not hike up the Teddy Roosevelt trail because a sand storm drove us out. Can you tell I am still amped about this trip we did about five years ago? <gg>
Do some google searches on Colonel Powell and the hiking around Lake Powell, and you will be booking your flights tomorrow. Here is a start:
