Just purchased a 29' Mirage..Comments???

Hello All,

Well I sold my Chris Craft 260 Stinger and up-graded to a 1980 low hours 29' Mirage. I don't know much about Mirage,..I've been told it's a similar hull as the Cigarette hull of that year....comments anyone? Good or bad....let's hear what you guys have to say.. :D

Re: Just purchased a 29' Mirage..Comments???

a friend of mine has one. built about the same quality as the Chris. has a bit less cabin and cockpit space than the 260 and i believe a foot narrower. for that you pick up some speed and some ruff water capability. what kind of water do you run in? i like the layout of my friends mirage and it has classic looks. pretty solid boat but i liked my 260 stinger better, slower but i liked all the room i had on it. what kinda power is in it?

Re: Just purchased a 29' Mirage..Comments???

The Boat has no Engines or Drives....I will post pics in a bit. Suggestions on engines,...I'll probably stay with carburated. It had Bravo 1's in it...I might go Bravo XR if I can find a good deal. The boat is clean, clean, clean though.

Mike,... I did buy the one of Ebay. I did an off-line deal and think I got a great boat for the money. The owner seems like a very solid guy..... I need to get a trailer purchased... I know of a manufacture in DE,... that's where the boat is at.

Do a search for post from a guy that goes by Albofaz. If it's the south Florida Mirage he probably had something to do with building it.

Thanks for all the great info guys. I was a bit leary about buying this boat, but from what I have heard sounds like shes a good one! So Litespeed....there were 280's in there huh. SBC's...Should I just build a couple of hot 383's for her? The guy I bought it from thought it may have been set up for BB's...? Hmmmm

Stormrider
You asked in the other thread if a Mirage was a better boat than a cig or magnum. I've had all three, and raced all three brands. I believe they are all built very well. If you look at a 28 cig ss next to a 10 meter mirage they look almost the same. The mirage is a little larger all the way around.

Boostedscrab
Best of luck with it. I have been out in often when Arnie Jr owned. it ran about 65 mph with the stock 280,s & trs drives. Great ocean boat !
The centers for drives when it was new I believe were cut on 32 inches for the small blocks.

I had a 79 with 280 TRS,bought it from Steve Johnson I think was his name,at the time, maybe 85,he owned Eagle boat trailers. Great boat,it was well set up and the motors were slightly built up,ran 73 I think,it was faster than two other 29s in town with big blocks. If I can find the pics I will post them.Classic boat with Cigarette like lines and build quality, you should have fun with it. Dave B

Well I must say im knew to the website.... but I can assure you if there is one boat I know everything about it will have to be EVERY SINGLE MIRAGE BOAT built in the late 70's and early 80's, the reason being that the man that owned and built MIRAGE BOATS is my Father. On that note I must say it is an excellent boat!!!

Welcome to OSO!
Very nice boats - It's inline for what I'm shopping for, classic old school!!
Your Dad built a helluva boat - and now you owe us picture's of the old day's - you may want to take it to the "Classic Offshore" thread - that's where us die-hards hang out (now that we have it :D )

Jose, is it true that the Velocity 30' came from the Mirage 29'? What did your dad think about this when it happened? Ed

Pops57 10-09-2006 07:05 PM

Thats is true, the owner of Velocity purchased a 29' hull and deck from my father. He then copied it and sold it as a 30' Velocity!

Pops57 - Can you explain your quote about the cheap imitations? Are there 'knock-off' Mirages out there?
