lightest v bottom of the 80's?????
Who made the lightest v bottom hull over 30 feet in the 80's??????
|
Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????
I dont know for sure but I bet Don Arronow built it.
|
Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????
I'll bet he didn't either. Aronow made boats to last. Old Cigs and Magnums are heavy.
|
Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????
Maybe m.m. and Lucy's 41 Apache might be the one of the lightest.
|
Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????
Sutphen are relatively light....?
|
Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????
The 80's KV Scarabs were very light layups. The deck bows when you walk on it!
|
Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????
Didnt Craig Barie build one that was so light it bounced all over?? I seem to remeber that story, was fast when it was smooth but no weight to go through the bigguns...maybe he will post...

Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????
This boat is light 8500 fully rigged

Yes, very light. If you lit a match under the deck in the daytime, you could see it from the outside. |
Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????
probably fountain 10 meter...
that would be my guess |

I'll go with Steve Stepp for $100.

No way. I had an early 80's 30 race boat that was heavy as hell. It still broke at the engine compartment bulkhead despite all the beef. Cracked from the gunwhale to the chine. Every one I ever heard of did too. |

No "Resin Bucket" on those hulls. Just enough glass to hold the paint into the shape of an Apache. There were more than a few "disposable hulls" back in those days. I think Rocky Aoki's Cobra 38 may have been the lightest. He stuffed it in the Potato Patch in SF harbor. Broke 8' off the bow. |
Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????
I would never use the words light, v-bottom and in the 80's in the same sentence. :D
|
Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????
I would say Sutphen or Superboat.
There is an old Sutphen with tripple outboards at my marina, not sure of the age but I went for a ride a few times and that puppy is light! It felt more like a cat than a v-bottom. |
Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????
My 30 Velocity weighs only 6500lbs.

Is that weight rigged or hull? |
Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????
A stock Formula 302 weighted in at 7500 pounds. That is very light for its size.

BTW, what's a short box? Do you mean short bed? I can pull my boat with my 2500 burban but not up hill and stopping is fun. |

Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????
The lightest boat was the one with the cargo area empty, no fuel and a few weigh saving bullet holes on the sides!
|
Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????
I think it is lighter because its on a 10000lbs (approx) lift and if you hit the side with your fist it wobbles just6 a hair and desnt have the thick sound like the other apaches we work on do.

Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????
1985 Mini Hawk 200 lbs (bare hull) :D
|
Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????
Chris, yea it's an 89 Regal. I'm getting the 6500lbs from NADA. Can't say it's accurate but the hull sides are very thin. I guess that's why it runs 75mph w/only mild 454s.
All is a trade off I suppose. |
Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????
What about Larry Smith built Scarabs? I thought they were pretty light but I could be wrong

I'm pretty sure some of the 36's that came with Speedmasters and big power had another 50 gallon tank under the v-berth area. |

audio, my old 302 ('79) weighed in @ 6900 lbs.; my old 32' spectra was 6700; and I too think that the velocity was at about 6500. - jeff

The 41' Apaches papache has ((JH Electric staggered race #6s and Chill Out Warrior staggered race #5s)) you can see shadows of hands if you're on the inside, looking outside, and you put your hand against the hull  |
