lightest v bottom of the 80's?????

Who made the lightest v bottom hull over 30 feet in the 80's??????

Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????

I dont know for sure but I bet Don Arronow built it.

Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????

I'll bet he didn't either. Aronow made boats to last. Old Cigs and Magnums are heavy.

Maybe m.m. and Lucy's 41 Apache might be the one of the lightest.

Sutphen are relatively light....?

The 80's KV Scarabs were very light layups. The deck bows when you walk on it!

Didnt Craig Barie build one that was so light it bounced all over?? I seem to remeber that story, was fast when it was smooth but no weight to go through the bigguns...maybe he will post...

Yes, very light. If you lit a match under the deck in the daytime, you could see it from the outside.

I'll go with Steve Stepp for $100.

No way. I had an early 80's 30 race boat that was heavy as hell. It still broke at the engine compartment bulkhead despite all the beef. Cracked from the gunwhale to the chine. Every one I ever heard of did too.

No "Resin Bucket" on those hulls. Just enough glass to hold the paint into the shape of an Apache.

There were more than a few "disposable hulls" back in those days. I think Rocky Aoki's Cobra 38 may have been the lightest. He stuffed it in the Potato Patch in SF harbor. Broke 8' off the bow.

I would never use the words light, v-bottom and in the 80's in the same sentence. :D

I would say Sutphen or Superboat.

There is an old Sutphen with tripple outboards at my marina, not sure of the age but I went for a ride a few times and that puppy is light! It felt more like a cat than a v-bottom.

Regal boat? What year?

Is that weight rigged or hull?

A stock Formula 302 weighted in at 7500 pounds. That is very light for its size.

Your right its not 1980's but the 36 in the classifieds is at our shop now and we pulled it out with a 1500 short box.

Can you get it on a scale, maybe it's some kind of light lay-up? I'd be curious to see what it weighs.

BTW, what's a short box? Do you mean short bed? I can pull my boat with my 2500 burban but not up hill and stopping is fun.

Its a 1993 chevy step side short box(bed). 4-low and its only up the driveway (launch ramp).

The lightest boat was the one with the cargo area empty, no fuel and a few weigh saving bullet holes on the sides!

TeamSaris 07-12-2006 10:27 AM

Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????

I think it is lighter because its on a 10000lbs (approx) lift and if you hit the side with your fist it wobbles just6 a hair and desnt have the thick sound like the other apaches we work on do.

Could be... I'm on a 12K lift and if the boat is full of fuel it doesn't want to lift the boat sometimes.

 How big are the tanks? We picked it up by water and about 50mph we hit some 6ft rollers and they were jothing for that boat.  (yes the mohican waves)

Re: lightest v bottom of the 80's?????

Chris, yea it's an 89 Regal. I'm getting the 6500lbs from NADA. Can't say it's accurate but the hull sides are very thin. I guess that's why it runs 75mph w/only mild 454s.

All is a trade off I suppose.

What about Larry Smith built Scarabs? I thought they were pretty light but I could be wrong

Mine has a single 220 Gallon tank. I guess thats another 1500-1800 lbs. in fuel so 12K is just about right.

I'm pretty sure some of the 36's that came with Speedmasters and big power had another 50 gallon tank under the v-berth area.

Regal built the boats different than Stepp did. Steve added alot more beef but it didn't help structurally. His mid-80's boats were better but still hefty. Your speed is a result of the bottom- not so much the weight. I'd be astonished if it scaled to that weight but you never know. The sides were foam (divinycell, I believe) sandwiched between 2 skins. The bottoms were Baltek. Awesome speed with moderate power. It took a skilled driver to run the boat at speeds though. At 80 to 90 they required 100% attention. Over 100 was a thrill ride.

I would think that is a good guess, didn't they have some light -layup Kevlar boats then?

audio, my old 302 ('79) weighed in @ 6900 lbs.; my old 32' spectra was 6700; and I too think that the velocity was at about 6500. - jeff

220gals = 1320lbs. @ 6lbs / gal.

The 41' Apaches papache has ((JH Electric staggered race #6s and Chill Out Warrior staggered race #5s)) you can see shadows of hands if you're on the inside, looking outside, and you put your hand against the hull
