Made ya look - Great conversation piece for my office, everyone has asked me "what the heck are those"

Actually bigger sea strainers hold more water thus when you get airborn there is some water stored and you have less of a chance of sucking dry.

Are you in the air that long to where it is a problem? Seems like the water in the drive and hose will at least keep the impellor lubed. Just thinking out loud
