Boat Insurance For Canadians

I'm picking up my new Sunsation 32SS (525's) in a couple of weeks and trying to get all my paperwork in order. Today I was quoted $8000 Cdn ($7000USD) a year which totally shocked me. I have about 250hrs on my Baja 25OL and no accident claims of any kind.....vehicle or boat or house or...... Can anyone give me the names of insurance companies that will insure in Canada.........OR is this really what these guys are charging for a boat like this??....if so, I'm not insuring it!

Where are you located? Canada is a big place.

Re: Boat Insurance For Canadians

Try Ogilvy and Ogilvy. Or, give everything you own to state farm to insure and the boat will be cheap.

Sutphil...Edmonton Alberta but do most of my boating in BC.

Airpacker...I'll try Olgivy and Olgivy thx. To change everything to State Farm would be difficult with the business etc.

Can you purchase just Fire and Theft for a boat like you can for a car or does it always come as a package?

My Nor Tech is insured by McMichael Davis. Ask for Scott McM.... #'s 888-821-8833 or 905-847-1616.
8K sounds high to me. My NT costs 11K plus another 1K for Florida coverage.

Thanks Bob. I'll call Scott in the morning although the other US companies I've rec'd leads on don't insure up here for some reason.

McM, Davis are in Oakville or Missisauga, ON. Until this year I had been using insurers from the US. My boat is registered in Ontario so it was no problem to get a policy here. My cost dropped from 17,000 USD to 12,000 CAD. Think I was paying too much down there.

Scott is charging about 900 for the old sporty. Full replacement value is the only way to go.

i have a 36 nor-tech cat 2005.i have agreed value policy and it cost 3%of the value of the boat.it would be 2%for a v-bottom(all risk).do the math yourself and you will find out that insurance are not cheap but you never know when you gonna need it.750.00 more for pokerruns coverage.price is in cdn.i called everywhere and for me here in montreal quebec, the only one for a cat is ted at ogylvie/ogylvie

good luck,jean-francois cote

MM Davis has been very expensive for us. I am with Premier Marine now, but Oglivie and oglivie did give me a lesser quote. But only by $200.00

Question, do you not have an insurance broker? They can shop them all for you.

Re: Boat Insurance For Canadians

Thanks Buck

The 2% sounds more like it Jean Francois. That's about half of what I have been quoted so far. Still expensive but not so ridiculous. I'll also call Ogilvie this morning.......thanks alot!

Re: Boat Insurance For Canadians

Canada Jeff.........Yes I do have an insurance agent that handles all our business and personal insurance but I tried him with my Baja previously and again with the Sunsation and apparently none of the companies he deals with cover these types of boats.........just ski boats and fishin boats. I'll try Premier for a quote too......thanks.

DC,
My agent in Toronto is Purves/Redmond 1-800-465-1137 and the marine policy is through Continental Casualty.
Good luck!

Re: Boat Insurance For Canadians

Thanks a bunch guys! Got it from Premier for less than half of my original quote. Have a great week-end!

Re: Boat Insurance For Canadians

Premier Marine is supposed to be good in the recreational market. I just bought a log cabin on an island in Lake Nipissing/Upper French that nobody wants to insure but my agent is going to try Premier Marine. Maybe the boat will end with them too.
Four grand is frightning but eight grand is scary!

Re: Boat Insurance For Canadians

4k is a lot of money for insurance,8k is worst but in my case,i would be very happy just to have to pay that.for my cat,=500000.00$valuex3%=15000.00cdn.my boating season is 15 weeks so it is 1thousand a week for protection.maybe it will help you feel better.if we start thinking of all it is costing us we will get crazy and hate our boat.

Re: Boat Insurance For Canadians

Nor3600.....my boat is less than half of that $ but you're right, if you're going to play, you have to pay! I just prefer not to add up all the toy costs on a weekly basis as you have done as it would make me crazy!!
Dun
