Mufflers
Are any of you guys running the new CMI Sound Elimination System mufflers? If so did they bring your decibel levels down alot? I got stopped yesterday and am at 101.5 and need to be at 90 or below. I can't use the down tubes from CMI because of my staggered setup. Thanks, Steve.

Re: Mufflers
Hey Steve, I am using the Livorsi E-series mufflers and they seem 2 do a good job! Tracy

Re: Mufflers
I put the north stars on my boat, they should get you down to 90 without a problem

Got my ticket for 114db !! No mufflers...... |
Re: Mufflers
This is what scares me.
I also could use a set not because I am getting stopped but after I shut it down in marinas I get the applause. Running at 45oo for a hour gives me a ring in the ears also. I am afraid that the mufflers that are effective bringing down the decibels below 90 will not support Hp levels in the 1100 plus area. |
Re: Mufflers
Check out the set of 4, that I have advertised in the "other parts and acc." section, ad #63, today. I can make them "clamp-on" or bolt on, I have all the parts and equip. to do it either way. Any size inlet that you need.
I'm open to reasonable offers. Gary Kollofski ph: 763-473-8963 |
Re: Mufflers
I'll checkout the add, thanks. If I had a side by side motor setup, it would be easy. Wes 114 is up there, thanks for the info, Steve.

Re: Mufflers
I run GGB's on 750HP NA and they are very quite with NO LOSS of PERFORMANCE. I think Lofty on the board is THE US distributor. Joe Murray

I have GGB's with Keith Eickert headers and was 94db at idle. I had to add "downtubes" to pass our 86db noise law. Isn't GGB out of buisness  Doug |
Re: Mufflers
What is your HP and what size exhaust. We can certainly check with similar set ups of customers that have successfully lowered the DB to pass and let you know if it will work.
Let me know are they NA engines or Blown too. Hopefully we can help. Kirk |

Re: Mufflers
I use the CMI mufflers in my Gladiator with stock 500's and 5" exhaust. It brought the noise down to 91 Db from alot more than that. Best part was the 30 minute install and only about a 1 mph loss at top speed

Re: Mufflers
I have CMIs on my 525 and have not been hasseled yet (knock on wood) but I lost about 4mph, but I love the sound

Kaama it was in GH, on wensday, they gave me a repair and report. I was hoping somebody running 950 to 1000 hp was already running this mufflers so I could buy with and know they will work.

Fred I sent you an email with a transom shot, sorry I still don't know how to post a photo.

PM me your Cell Steve I lost it. |
Re: Mufflers
Nykamp, I'm telling you, the downtubes are the way to go. I have staggered #6's with 1000hps, and they work great, no back pressure once on plane. The center exhaust pipes only have 3/4" between them and the clamp-on's fit. They're quiet as hell at idle. I'm not near the boat now, but i will be this weekend, i'll take a picture.

Steve's stagger will provide a little bit of a challenge for down spouts. The starboard, inboard pipe, comes out right over the port transom housing.

Re: Mufflers
Gary,
What is the drop from muffler centerline to the end of the down pipe on the ones you have for sale? I may be interested in those for my Cougar, or modifying my Gaffrigs in a similar manner. Jim |
Re: Mufflers
The dimension from the center of the muffler to the tip of the "down-tube" is 18"
Do you need any other dimensions? |
Re: Mufflers
I just looked @ the transom on your Apache.
I believe it would be possible to take the 2 port pipes and "drop" the "down-tubes" to the left of the port drive and take the 2 stbd. pipes and "drop" them to the right of the stbd. drive. The ex. pipe between the drives would probably have to have the horizontal run of the "down-tube" lengthened a few inches to clear the gimble. It can be done. Give me a call and we could discuss it. Re: Mufflers
What type of switchables do you have on there now? Did they test with them in the "silent" position? Also, before you spend a bunch, it looks like the law will change, within the next two years max, to where we will also be tested at speed in Michigan (similar to Wisconsin's law), not just at idle.

I am going with the new CMI's 5 by 6's from Fred @ Trick, Thanks Fred. Steve

Re: Mufflers
What are "new CMI's 5 by 6's"? Why did you decide on them? I'm looking for mufflers for Mercury HP525SC motors. Appreciate your thoughts.

Here's the information from Custom Marine's website..... CMI Sound Elimination System™ mufflers are the next generation of sound reduction technology from CMI. These fully polished stainless steel mufflers enable boaters to operate their performance boats in stealth mode by reducing sound emissions to levels as low as 85 decibels (dB) -- below the most strict sound emission regulations. The mufflers are strategically engineered to reduce sound without restricting the exhaust or creating unwanted backpressure, which can inhibit the engine from reaching peak performance power. Mufflers can be installed on any exhaust system with tailpipes ranging from four to six-inches in diameter, which covers inboard or stern drivepowered recreational and performance boat applications up to 1200 horsepower. A superior design using 304 stainless steel results in fewer parts than competitive models, which will ensure long-lasting durability and reliability for marine applications.Clamp-on options include a 4-inch model to fit tip-style tailpipes by replacing transom tip to thru-transom version or simply clamp on existing tips; a 4.5-inch model to fit thru-transom tailpipes; and a 5-inch model for larger tailpipe diameters primarily used with CMI Big Tube Race Header Systems. The 5-inch muffler can also be retro-fitted into 5- and 6-inch outside diameter tailpipes to accommodate larger horsepower applications. This option is available to OEM boat builders that order the muffler installed during the tailpipe manufacturing process for an inconspicuous appearance upon installation in the boat |

Ratickle,
What is the db limit for the fly by test in Wisconsin? Who is proposing the change to the legislation in Michigan so we can start fighting it NOW? |

Re: Mufflers
I have a DB meter. So far I have tested 2 boats with the cmi
sound elimination system. One with 500 efis. One with 525's. Neither will pass the 90 db at 1 meter requirment. Both tested out at 91-92 DB's. Unfourtunatley,up here, they wont give you 1/10 of a DB over 90. Its "fix it or get it off the lake". My 35X with 496's barely passes with the silent choice on!!!! 89.7 DB's |

Re: Mufflers
I think Im good with my noise. I have passed many Patols and not one of them has attempted tp pull me over.. The day Rick checked me it was windy, there was alot of ambient noise and there were woods and a mountain directly behind me. Under true conditions. I will be real close.
Fred, We will check again while you are up here |
Re: Mufflers
Turn off 1 motor. they will think your broken or really trying to be quiet.........

Re: Mufflers
Here is the current Wisconsin law. I edited it some because it is very long with a bunch of training and education requirements.
NR 5 .125(1)(b) ,An officer requesting a boat operator to submit to a noise test shall test the boat using testing methods J34a, J1970 or J2005 . SECTION 5. NR 5 .125(3)(b) is created to read : NR 5 .125(4) CUTOUT MECHANISMS . No person may operate a boat t hat is equipped with a muffler cut out, by-pass sw itch or similar device unless the operator of the boat can demonstrate at the time of inspection that the boat cannot operate contrary to s . 30.62(2)(b), NR 5.125,(3)(b) Operation standard. Noise level testing procedures J34a, J1970 or J2005 of the Society of Automotive Engineers shall be adhered to by boat operators when requested to submit to one or more of them by officers conducting noise tests on boats operating in the state of Wisconsin . |
