The Fountain Beak - Why?
Can anyone tell me the theory behind the bow design on the Fountain hulls? Try as I might I canīt get over how (for me) it spoils completely the overall look of the hull. Is it supposed to help prevent damage in the event of a stuff?? The only benefit I can see is that it makes it obvious that itīs a fountain and canīt be mistaken for anything else - but to me itīs just ugly......!!

This will be like an Apache thread :D Here is my summation of the responses you will get: Fountain guys It makes the boat noticeable and stand out in a crowd. People recognize fountain because of this Non-Fountain guys Reggie added the beak and integrated swim platform so he could advertise a boat as being 3' longer than it actually is I once had a fountain owner tell me the engine compartments open to the sides so you could work on the engines during a race....my response "sure, I have swapped carbs at 90 MPH many times" :D :D |
Re: The Fountain Beak - Why?
the beak is the result of peniz envy, the mich light boat has two large holes in the engine bulkhead so the navigator or throttle man can enter the engine compartment while under way without having to open the engine hatches, keep in mind the old school boats were raced in the old days when the men were men and the sheep knew it :D

Re: The Fountain Beak - Why?
The beak makes it easier to insert.

Re: The Fountain Beak - Why?
it provides lift.

I think it started out as way to be a little different. Which in my opinion is a good thing. That's why I have a Super Hawaii, to be a little different. Now there are so many Fountains, it is no longer different. But you can always tell when it is a Fountain.
What I don't understand is why there is such a love/hate relationship to peoples opinions of Fountains. I feel they are great boats for a decent price. Leave it at that. Why on earth do some people feel the need to bash other peoples boats? Get your boat out on the water, line up with a Fountain , and race. Then do it in rough water. see who is faster. A lot will depend on the driver!!!! |

Re: The Fountain Beak - Why?
Fountain hull was originally an Excalibur hull.He added the beak to make it his own.
|
Re: The Fountain Beak - Why?
So it would'nt look like an excalibur.

perhaps it was to differt the airflow over that high windshield to prevent hair piece failures in some cases :D

Re: The Fountain Beak - Why?
If Fountains did not have beaks then OSO would be the most boring place on the face of the earth, So i will stand by my theory that the beak is in place for the good of OSO.... :drink:

Re: The Fountain Beak - Why?
You guys all have it wrong, the shape of the beak provides aerodynamic lift which increases the speed and improves the handling of the boat.
At least that's what Reggie said years ago in advertisements and interviews. How do I know it's true?? BECAUSE YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS SH*T UP :D |
Re: The Fountain Beak - Why?
So, that means we need to get the cat builders to start adding beaks??
|
Re: The Fountain Beak - Why?
Most people laugh when I explain it, most folks thing it's simply stylistic, but the fact is that the beak (and the flare which is evident down the length of most of the hull) has a huge impact on the aerodynamics of Fountain's hulls. Not only does it provide a substantial deal of bow lift, but this flare, or lip, helps greatly streamline and separate the flow of air down the hullsides and the deck. It alleviates a good deal of 'swirling' as air tends to spill from the front sides and onto the deck. This creates a vortexing movement of air on most boats. I've done some CFD modeling on various hulls, and reggie definately has something with his beak. ;)

That's the way I understand it as well. Here is a picture that I yanked out ot the classifieds of a 32 EXCALIBUR. |

I was curious about that because I read the reason the new raceboat is missing its beak was because of too much bow lift at those speeds. |

Re: The Fountain Beak - Why?
OK ill say it , I like the look of the beak, you can always tell what it is right away.. In fact the only thing I dont care too much for on the fountains is the dash.. Dated orange crate, prefer the sticks in my right hand and flat not verticle..

Re: The Fountain Beak - Why?
I like the look very streamlined. But not everybody is 4 ft tall . I just don't feel safe in them standing and the bolsters tend to push you out of them. The cabin in my 28 is just as big as a 35!!! whats up with that?

Now every offshore builder will add the beak to get better top speed and handling....just like they did with the steps. :p I also noticed that the beak splits the big waves better than most. |
Re: The Fountain Beak - Why?
I think there are some aero advantages to the beak but its also 18" of boat for Reggie to sell like the 32" swim platform. So that made my 35 i just SOLD a 30'10" boat. Ive got too move the bunks back 6' on my lift for the new AT 37. Some of my friends are asking why im only getting a 2' bigger boat and then i explain the keel length and they understand.
