How much of a market would there be???

Alright guys, I need some opinions here. As a lot of us probably have in common, I hate my job and answering to other people. So, Ive been thinking of a way to start my own business. Ive been thinking of taking trips to all the major hotspots for major events and partys, and doing a video, and putting it all together. Im kinda thinking a girls gone wild meets some of the baddest boats out there type video. Would there be much of a market for something like that outside of the offshore crowd, if at all? Just looking to find some opinions. The reason I thought of this is I went to Suncoast video the other day looking to buy a boating video of some sort, and I could find extreme skiing, biking, snowmobiling, yadda yadda, but nothing powerboat related. Thoughts, comments??

Re: How much of a market would there be???

I would love to see videos like that. However, I don't think outside of the offshore community there would be much demand. My guess is that you MIGHT make enough back to cover your expenses, but you wouldn't be able to quit your day job to do it. Sorry for the negativity, but I really think this is the truth.

What about freelancing and trying to film videos for established companies like girls gone wild. You could try to contact them and see if they had any interest and do it on the side while you KEEP YOUR DAY JOB and feel your way around. Pun intended. :D :D

Re: How much of a market would there be???

Thanks for the reply. Just trying to get an idea of what kind of market there would be, and if it would be worth the time and money invested. I would be more leaning towards the boats, but adding the women to bring in a broader range of viewers. Just an idea Ive been throwing around, because I would love to have something like that available to buy.

Sell toilet paper , tires , water , insurance , etc. Do not start any business related to boating. You'll have to give away the first 50 videos and then the rest of your customers will want one for 1/2 price. Boating should always be a hobby. Oh yea...how do you make a million dollars in the boating business , start with 2 million - haha.

I aleady sell car parts and tires, and believe me its not much fun. I guess Im looking to do something that I would enjoy as opposed to something just to pay the bills. :D

Thanks for the heads up. I wouldnt want it to be girls gone wild, but more about the boats, including some party shots. Nothing behind closed doors and things like that. Sounds like this guy took it a little to far.

Right now you have to answer to a "BOSS" 9 to 5, if you start your own business you have to answer to the "BOSS" (the people who pay you) 24-7. The financial reward can be good when it's good, but it's because the risk is significant and the hours SUK!!!
BTW: I don't believe you could quit your day job doing this......but it would be fun!!!!!! Good Luck

Thanks for the input. Ive never owned my own business, so I know there would be a lot to learn. I dont think I would be able to quit my day job, right away if at all, but it would be fun to do, and also bring in some more income. If anything, somebody else do this so I can have a good boating video for crummy Michigan days when I cant go out :D

Re: How much of a market would there be???

I think if you want to do a boat handling, docking, safety video would be more of a seller, as it would appeal to all boaters. There are a lot of people that have the $$ to buy a boat (big, small, fast or slow), but are afraid to tow, launch or dock the boat. The video could go into anchoring, navigation...

I know there are some very old videos of docking techniques et al that you can buy, but they are outdated. I would market the video to boat builders to give to their new owners before (if possible) the boat is delivered. Take a look at how many production boats are built versus performance and you will see a better opportuntiy here (IMHO).

Good luck... if you make millions on this idea, please remember me :drink:

Re: How much of a market would there be???

Not a bad idea you have there Boomer, but I won't steal your idea. But I think you might be on to something if you could get some manufacturers to purchase them from you.

Re: How much of a market would there be???

I am just a marketing guy... take the idea and run with it.

This idea would not be as much fun, but it might make you some $$ to buy a hot boat and then meet a few hot ladies!

PS. this video is a low-cost item that is a win-win for the builder and the new owner. If you ever go to www.boatingabc.com you will see how many new people buy a boat but do not have a clue as to how to operate the boat.

Good luck.

Re: How much of a market would there be???

You could also mix in video and footage of the builders boat into a custom intro and close of the video to make it personalized to the builder. I am sure someone like Sea Ray, Baja, Cobalt, Formula would be interested in the idea.

Best thing is that you can update the custom intro and close as models change over the years.

OK, I'm done now. :D

I think you are on to something there Boomer as long as the manufacturers dont already have something in place they give out.

Thats the other thing. The auto industry around here has gone right down hill, so the money isnt there like it once was. Thats why I have all this free time because it is so slow.

I would ask yourself this question:

What is there to keep you from doing it?

If you cant give yourself a good reason, jump in.

At this point the only thing keeping me from doing it is blowing x amount of dollars to get no return in profits I guess. But there would only be one way to find out I suppose.

Couldn't agree more! I was a DIEHARD snowmobiler. I was always tweaking sleds. Clutching mainly(which I enjoyed) and bolt on stuff like reeds, pipes, billet heads, etc. I really liked dialing them in.

Decided to start a part time business a few years ago. Figured I'd have to start out part time and see how it went. After three years sales were up dramatically, my name was getting out and I had a good reputation. Well, after three years I also HATED snowmobiles. My hobby was now dragging me down. I owned a brand new sled every year since 1995. I haven't owned one in 5 years now.

He's saying once your hobby becomes your job it CAN take the fun out of it.

This isn't getting dumb drunk bimbos to go down on each other while you tape it! :D

You have to look at the big picture. Yes shooting boating vids sounds great. Hell yeah just stand around, do some boating and party like I always do and get some footage. Not that simple. Now you're looking for all the great shots. Afraid you're going to miss some. Can't ACTUALLY boat and party cause you're afraid to miss a shot. Etc, etc. You see where I am going.

I am not saying it will take the fun out of it. Just be careful because it could! Just my $.02

Perhaps a better question to ask on OSO would be for a few suggestions for a boating related business that would be successful. Ask the members of OSO what their needs are and fill them. Take the suggestions and opinions and run with them. just my .02
