Whats up with all the BS...??
I know everyone has their own side of the story, but...
I thought this forum was a place where people that loved boats could get together and associate with other people that loved boats, and share stories and knowledge, and maybe even buy and sell a few things. There have been several threads and posts lately about deals going wrong, and I just don't understand why. The people that are not coming through with their side of the deal, or who don't practice good business and social ethics are ruining the integrity of this forum. You guys make doing any kind of legit business on this forum difficult because you are destroying the bond that brings us together here. Get your sh*t straight or get out. |
Re: Whats up with all the BS...??
This site is just like society as a whole.
The key is to sift through the BS and the knobs and find valid information, good deals and most importantly good friends, all of which I have found TONS of here. |
Re: Whats up with all the BS...??
i too have made some great friends via oso, i had the most fun ive had in years at loto with some truley wonderful people from the oso family that i had never met in person. it seems the marine industry like many others has its share of unethical people. i heard of the bad business section here on oso but it was put out to pasture before i joined the site for some reason or another. i took me almost a year to figure out who the class acts are as far as engine builders go here on oso. i have seen people on oso jump at the chance to help a fellow oso when he's in a time of need, like todds cig raffle, or moving a boat or picking up parts etc, just to help an oso brother out, i was amazed by some of the wonderful things ive seen some oso'ers do for each other, like when i was looking for a ride to loto from st louis, freedom 1 offered me and my buddy a ride in his private plane from kc to loto...how cool is that? then on the other hand you hear of stories about guys like good t that presented them selves as white hat kinda of guys until they're in a position to benefit finacially by taking advantage of another oso'er to make a quick buck. it seems these type of people dont have the forsight to see that its a small world due to the internet and they will soon be found out and no one will do business with them in the future, not that its a great loss as the offshore community will be better off with out them in the long run!

Re: Whats up with all the BS...??
I think you have to weed thru all the BS and make your own mind up. I have talked to many people from OSO on the phone but never have meet them in person. I have learned so much from this forum from members that have nothing to gain but friendship. I have sold parts and bought parts to members of OSO . I have sent thousands of dollars to people I have never met, just read thru BS and this will be your extended family.

Re: Whats up with all the BS...??
There is much more good than BS on here, but thanks for straightening us out.

tweakinit that's a perfect example of the BS from dry-docked, hp-challenged, height-challenged, mental-midgitery exhibiting boat owner/hitchhiker you have to dismiss. :drink: |

Re: Whats up with all the BS...??
I have both bought and sold quite a few things via OSO and have NEVER had a problem with anyone. Now, is that because I was lucky or because I did my homework before engaging in a deal, who knows!
My .02 cents.... Joe P.S. Not to mention, made a LOT of good friends along the way!!! Even a few Apache guys! :D |
Re: Whats up with all the BS...??
Well for one.....all the threads get deleted anyway and we never find out what the real story is...
Whether it be good or bad, some closure would be nice! |

Re: Whats up with all the BS...??
Alright guys....I wasn't trying to beat anyone up, and I certainly won't allow a few bad apples to ruin the bunch.
There is a world of knowledge here, and I too have met many fine people through OSO. I appreciate each and every thread. As for my posts...I really don't have the boating technical knowledge to offer any valuable input, so I have preferred to keep quit, listen, and learn. I started the thread because I am aggravated that some people would consider "stealing" from a fellow OSO member. I just don't see any point in tarnishing your name for a few bucks. |

Although your low post count - I had 2 mysel a month ago but I'm a blabber mouth - I agree with your statement and thus like to see what's going on with everyone. The plus side is that magazine ads will never let you know who the ass's are, like the internet finally will !!! Same goes for some of the real good companies. |
Re: Whats up with all the BS...??
i have met 2 of my best friends here on OSO.......

Re: Whats up with all the BS...??
It's to bad that a few members of this site believe that your credibility is tied to the number of posts you have made, but it sure is a good way to keep new members quiet. I guess your not allow to have an opinion or share or ask for information until you have at least a jillion posts. I have gained a lot of helpful information on this site just by reading and I have also met a large number of great people that are very helpful--so keep on posting and I'll keep on reading and learning. :D

Re: Whats up with all the BS...??
I have been on this site from the start, it has gone from a nobody to a power house that can actually move the industry. With this power and size comes predators, just like any good web site you get those with an agenda and hide behind screen names and cause trouble. We are very good at weeding these tools out and we will continue to protect our own here and hang the bad seeds out to dry. We have recovered stolen boats, we have saved lives, we have been there for those who we care about and have buried the ones we do not trust. So all in all you have to be careful, you can tell very easily what a person is up to here by their posts, not the number but the quality. I have meet many good friends here, I have never been burned and would do anything for a member in good standing...anything. So the key here is to enjoy the site, take those that are a little "off" with a grain of salt and you will find great people who all share the same love...boats and boating. :D There will always be crooks, just pay attention and we will point them out so you can save a ton of money and hassle. If you have a question about someone just ask, you will have your answer in a very short time. Have fun and welcome to the Board. :D

Re: Whats up with all the BS...??
I am a newbie with a low post count, so of course I don't think the number of times you've voiced an opinion has anything to do with credibility. It just means you have a lot of opinions and a boss who doesn't watch your computer screen. It's the content of those opinions and the basis for them that establish credibility. There certainly are people on this board with more posts that T2X (I imagine he probably has a job that keeps him busy), but no one, at least to my way of reading, has more credibility.
Put it this way: Budweiser sells a lot of beer. Does that make it great beer? (No offense, Bud people.) Volume means nothing in terms of quality, and credibility is about the quality, not quantity, of the information and opinions rendered. As for this board being able to "move the industry," that's a pretty bold statement, though I appreicate the passion behind it. You'd have to give me an example of that. Spanking Powerboat, for example, for being stupid enough to run an ad from the Save the Manatee Club, doesn't exactly count as moving the industry. What we have, well, what you guys have since my post count and credibility are so low, is an unbelievable way of connecting and sharing information. As for clout, certainly you can affect the business of a vendor, especially if he's doing evil things. But changing the industry? Not so much. |
Re: Whats up with all the BS...??
OSO is part of our daily life and it is a great family! there will always be good and bad... But we are there for each other! ;)

Not so much. well said, but this board is more about meeting and social events as well.. t2x does not have that respect cause he hides behind his computer, but cause he is out there meeting the people or for what he has done in the past... you are right, any a hole can have 10,000 posts..... still for the amount of a holes that are on this board, and the amount you get f ed in a deal, i still have met some of the best people, and have had some business dealings with... this board is like a small ecosystem, it needs its top brass and it needs ditch diggers, good guys and bad.. its all about flavor..... |
Re: Whats up with all the BS...??
Tweak I went back and carefully read your post. This forum is no way being ruined and there's definitely no de-bonding on here. Ths site is growing dailyand the bad seeds have a way of working themselves out of OSO. Alot of conflicts on here attrack many new members. Everybody wants to express their opinion. In my opinion it's what makse this site so great!

Re: Whats up with all the BS...??
Stezc20,
I think the ability of this board, and I guess all message boards where the people are passionate about their sports and hobbies, to bring people together outside the cyber world is remarkable. You meet people online in an environment that is pretty safe and it's onward from there. What this thing has become, the social aspects of it in particular, is amazing. Hope you didn't think I was implying any disrespect to this board at all. It has done, as MitchStellin pointed out, some great things on the individual level. And it might someday move the industry, I wouldn't rule it out. But it hasn't happened yet. T2X isn't the only person with serious credibility here, just the most obvious. As for unscrupulous people coming onto a friendly forum and ripping people off, as someone else said a message board is just a microcosim of society. Thieves and cheats are not discerning in their targets. But here's where this board gets really cool ... they don't get away with it for long. Word gets around here, fast. With that power, though, does come a certain amount of responsibility. We can ruin someone's business on this board. So we need to consider what we write before we write. I saw one post a couple of days ago, which was mercifully deleted, that was a case in point. You can always delete a post if you find out you were wrong. But you cannot delete the perception your post might have created. There's no delete button for that. |
Re: Whats up with all the BS...??
Joker, I gotcha...that was my bad choice of words. You are certainly right, OSO is not and will not be ruined by these few tools. Twould be nice for there not be any liars, cheaters, or stealers here, but then again, this is not a perfect world.
Thanks guys and gals for your responses. We wouldn't be on here if we weren't looking for other people's opinions and advice. |
Re: Whats up with all the BS...??
Ahhhhh I feel an OSO hug coming - haha. Welcome!
