I was just going to post something like this, you read my mind.

How come I never see Fountain vs. Formula or Nortech vs. Outerlimits.

Always Baja in the mix, always Baja getting $hit on. From non Baja owners of course.

I love mine, leave us alone. :evilb:

or I guess we can take it as a compliment :D

I think, in my biased opinion, that they are compared to everything because they are a more affordable alternative to the other name brand boats.

Re: why all the Baja questions???

I would imagine it comes from an entry level "Offshore" boat that is "pretty", and well marketed to a sect that is not well educated in true Offshore and performance boating, and sold at a reasonable price (if such a thing exists for a "performance boat. )

They aren't a bad boat, Baja was my entry to "performance" boating.
I won't buy another one, but not because there is anything wrong with them, they just don't suit the type of boating I like to do. I'm kinda hard on the sticks:D , and I like BIG water, and BIG air:D.

I'll destroy a Baja they way "I" like to run, It all depends on where you boat, and how you like to run.

They are nice looking boats at a pretty good price. Not bad if it fit's the type of boating you like to do.

I have owned a baja in the past and I would not have a problem having another one. They remind me of a corvette. Mass produced by a company with millions in R & D, fast and fun to drive with alot of cool features, but they do not compare to a ferrai or lamborgini.

Big water come to cape cod :p Sh#t I have owned my boat for 16yrs it's got some stress cracks but I have seen them in all the boats out there except for 2, O L AND Sutphen. I have been running the boat with 585 to 670 hp for the last 10 yrs. This winter I am doing the rear bulkhead over and adding a couple to the front. in the past 10 yrs I have out rode may boats bigger than myself starting in a bay and then heading out to open water just have to have balls and know how to run. I do it a lone if its rough just throw the passengers out in the bay and tell them you will back after you run the big dog down or I think it was BAD DOG on the side of the boat it was from falmouth killed him in the bay and just stayed in front of him in the big stuff UNTIL HE THREW HIS HANDS :p OH I was just joking about throwing out the passengers  .yes my nexted boat will be a SUTPHEN,JOKER,OR SUPERBOAT with a single but my BAJA has been good to me and is already stronger than the factory made it thanks to a couple of people

Theres a BIG difference if they are 5 to 8 ft swells aka rollers or white cap MOTHER F$CKER S. big swells can be more fun in a 24ol then a 35 footer thats hitting the 2 tops seen that going to BLOCK ISLAND ONE DAY we were landing just right and the big boy had to go back until morning no balls I guess  . but I have had the sh$t kicked out of me going from the canal to the bass river racing my wife and friends to a house on fingers  :eek:There in cars they were waiting for me at the dock :p I had to be drag out of the boat it was 5 to 6 foot white caps all the way from woods hole to bass river I was going east, wind was headed west  :D

Re: why all the Baja questions???

 You guys ever hear of the Edmond Fitzgerald? :p

On that particular ride over to the islands in the 22 Baja, the boat was landing in holes with waves going over me (on the port side) and crashing over the captain. We dont have rollers. If you've never boated on Lake Erie, then you really have no idea, and if you have, then you know exactly what Im talking about.

And the 5s to 8s is what the national weather service was calling them yesterday ... I didnt see them so I cant confer ... but Im guessin they would know :D

RG, why all the saber guys say others cant run w/ them in 6-8s on the lake? Isnt that what happened in this yrs SOTW?

I'm sure you went out for a ride in that stuff, but could you run for 1/2hr?
just trying to get educated... only view i've had of Lake mich. is from the chicago shore. :(

Cant or wont. The ride to the islands normally is a 5-10 minute ride. That day was a lot longer. The cabin door broke, the radio fell out. I didnt say it was a smooth ride .. just that we did it. :D There are a handful of guys that run no matter what the conditions (see Thrillseeker, TeamBaja, Frank the Tank, Glassdave, RHC) but sane people dont.

Im only a passanger so maybe one of these guys that runs it can better explain .... or ask the Jersey Boyz how the Mentor race was .... and that was just chop .. no real big waves :drink:

Lake is pretty flat today but if the wind picks up, maybe it will get better

I have had my 32 Caliber (next year called Outlaw) for 9 years and run mostly in lake Erie and run 80 on GPS and anybody that has ever gotten on my boat that either owns or rides on other boats such as Fountain or Formula all agree that it is the best rough water boat they have been in and are amazed by the ride and stability of the boat.It may not be as fast as a 35 Fountain with same power but there is no way that they will keep up with me in the rough stuff that lake Erie will give you on a daily basis. Now lets talk about cockpit size even there biggest boats do not compare and free board nope they lose again. There are only 2 choices I would have for lake Erie either a bigger Baja or Cigarette none stepped but I have a family and that would make the cockpit of the Baja my first choice but for bling factor the Cigarette win.

Re: why all the Baja questions???

Damn, I guess I took some heat last nite.
Let me adress the questions:
No, there is no big water in Kentucky. I was Re-(mis)-located here.
I grew up on Lake Erie, started boating at age 10, and have over 25 yrs experience in "big" water.
RG isn't kidding about 5-8's, I've been out on Erie in worse than that. And yes, a 5' wave means a 10' hole, a 8' means a 16' hole.
The way the waves usually stagger, you try to run in the trough of the waves, you can only do this for a set of about 3-4 waves, before you hit a wall with no place else to go but over (through) the wave. RG - is this about what you're speaking of??

And No, I haven't bought another boat yet - thanks for salt in the wounds...
I'm working on it, just having a hard time putting together the scratch. Everytime I turn around something else takes a bite outta the wallet.

I'm not bashing Baja at all - and I hope I didn't come off that way. I thought I was pretty clear. They are a good boat, for what they are.
They certainly aren't a Cigarette, Pantera, Saber, *insert choice here*...
When I said true offshore, what I mean is something that is out there to handle the rough, and ready to race to Nassau.
Baja seems like something very pretty, and looks great pulling into the docks at a restaurant - but to go out and run hard, it's not my first choice.

Re: why all the Baja questions???

There's been alot of BS talk about Bajas/Fountains etc without anybody backing up what they say. Somebody says they saw stress cracks on a Baja, big deal, it's hard to find a boat that was used offshore that doesn't have them. For you Baja bashers stating that you don't think they hold up...why?? Give us some details, what is the type of fiberglass mat used, what type of core, type of resins, hand laid, vacuum bagged, gel resin, stringer make-up, transom material, deck/hull joint bonding, blah blah blah. How does it compare to Fountain? Lots of BS here but no substance from these people. Personally, I've never been on a Baja or poked around one, I'm curious about their construction techniques.

Re: why all the Baja questions???

Ok, here's the real story about yesterday and the 5 to 8's.

I was out endurance testing the new BAJA 277 Islander and the conditions were horrible. Knowing Dawn (Racegirl) was probably sitting in front of a computer, I called her for a lake report and the national weather service were reporting 5-8' for my area. It seemed much bigger, but see bouyhunters last post about big water and the holes. He definately has an accurate description. I was out for around 6 hours yesterday, taking a short break to run in the Sandusky Bay which was still choppy, but more realistic to run in.

However, when I decided to hang it up for the day, I had to go back through the big stuff. When I got back to the worst area (near the lighthouse in Marblehead, anyone that knows this area knows what Im talking about. Tell em RHC! :D ) I was hitting it head on and put the bow straight into one which gave me a nice 1' wall of water straight through the boat. So I started running over them diagonally and could actually ride a single wave down the backside for a long way. The whole way back I kept thinking it should be the next X-Games event, because I felt like a skateboarder on a halfpipe! :D

Yeah, I guess it is. And you just leave that last part out, you think it, but you don't say it.

Are you saying that a Baja look's like a woman that has had two kid's??

I already said I like Baja's, it's just not my choice for how I like to boat.
