TRS Out......Konrad In !
I broke down and bought a set of Konrads for my 1985 Cigarette mistress. I am in the process of installing them now. My motors put out between 650-675HP. I was spinning 25" mirage plus props before inward and they wound the motors to about 4900 RPM. I want to run the RPMs around 5300RPM. The Konrads are also 1.38" shorter and I purchased the ones with nose cones. I was thinking 4 blades. I also installed the drives to spin outward for docking purposes. Any suggestions on props? Experience with Konrads.
Anyone interested in some great parts for a TRS setup, freshwater low hours, here is a link.....no disapointments. http://search.ebay.com/trs-outdrive_W0QQfkrZ1QQfromZR8 |
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
You're going to need to post some pic's of the work in progress.
Let's see what ya got!! Sound's like the Mis' is a good candidate for this upgrade. Not sure if anyone else on the board has made the same conversion on this hull. My only question is why turning outward for docking?? - maybe I'm missing something - if so, please explain. |
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
I am going to try spinning them out. I hope I don't loose any speed. Docking the boat is challenging with them turning in. I was told it would be easier if they were turning out. I will be posting some pictures of the install. I have one on, and one ready to go. Weather here has been slowing down the process.

We love our Konrads. Doller Offshore did the conversion from Bravo"type" drives to the Konrad this past spring. They solved our problems.

Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
There are several articles coming out besides this months Powerboat article.
I think that you'll find that alot of perfomance boaters will be making the upgrade from the Merc Std. X or XR Bravo Drives to the Konrads. |
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
I know I will be happy with the purchase, I just want to know where to start with props.

Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
24 0r 26 Bravo 1 four blades.
|
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
I agree, 24 or 26 Bravo 1 four blade. I'd start with the 24.
Are you going to test before winterizing? I think I'm done. Kurt |
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
Not going in the water, snow this weekend for me. I am finishing the install. I also need to buy props. Do I need special hubs for the Konrads or just the standard Bravo XR big shaft
|
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
No special hubs needed, just a standard XR style (1 1/4") hub.
|
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
I will have to try some props in the spring. Winter is going to go slow this year.

I'm going to do something, my TRS again I need to fix. It's hard to come up with 24K for the two. I need to do something

Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
I understand where you are coming from. Its a tough decision. You can always have a set of backup TRS.
I have my complete LH Drive, RH Upper and Lower Housing and Props for sale on ebay. If you are interested in a total package for them let me know. freshwater low hours, here is a link.....no disapointments. http://search.ebay.com/trs-outdrive_W0QQfkrZ1QQfromZR8 Everything is excellent. I was going to have Chris Rebuild the RH side all new at Sterndrive Specialists but decided to go Konrad. |

Welcome to the club! The bad news is you'll spend more money on fuel since you won't be broken down for weeks on end! We love our Konrads and have some other happy customers too.
If you need to try some props in spring let me know. We have a HUGE stock and can loan you a few sets till you find the right set up. Steve Broz, call me, we can do better than that on drives for you. Fionn (Finn) 925.952.4240 |
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
If anyone needs pics of the Konversion let me know, I've got tons of pics of the whole thing. A decent mechanic can swap drives in a day without pulling motors.

Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
Cigrocket,
To convert over from TRS to Konrad, do you have change the transoms assemble also? Thank you Jim |
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
You might want to call Hydromotive. Their 4 blades spinning out really woke up my straight bottom 311 Formula. Joe Murray

I did the conversion on my 85 38 Cigarette and love the drives.
I did have a problem getting on plane with the raised X-dimension. With My trs's I could turn 25 Mirages 5100 Rpm. with 550hp each. I usually ran 24 Hydromotives at 5000rpm's I could barely get the boat on plane if it was rough out with 24 Hydro' and 26 Bravo's Until I put a 1"spacer and lowered the drive back down. Then it would jump on plane and the prop was more efficient. The raised x did not help my boat at all. I took the spacers out this year and ran a 25 P5X the boat came on plane easily in any kind of water but was not as efficient as they were with the spacers. Next year I am putting the spacer back in so I can run the 4 blade or the 5 blade props. Mark :drink: |
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
I am not sure what you mean (LOFTY) about the U Joints. I did the half conversion and ordered directly from Konrad and they came with the large Konrad U joints and they intsalled fine. the only thing I had to do was change the trs bellhousing which comes with the half conversion. The whole setup can be installed in less then an hour for each side with 2 people.

Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
Lofty, what i meant by that is that its nice to see members helping each other out. Especially if its getting a deal on uprading to konrads!
Cigrocket... did your engines dyno at 650-675? Spinning 25mirage+ @ 4900rpm seems kinda low if Mr Cigs 38 spins the 25mir @5100 w/ 550hp. |
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
Rev Limiters are set at 5000 RPM's. I was always trying to save the TRS Drives. With the Konrads I am going to spin them to the 5400 RPM. I still was seeing 72-73 MPH in any condition with the 4800. Fast for a heavy... heavy.....heavy mistress.
|
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
Thanks for clearing that up for me...
I'm psyched for you... and now i get to add another boat to my local wants list now that you'll have THE drives to have imo. You figuring you'll be running close to 80mph? |
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !

honestly I am thinking it will probably be more like 76-77. I am being realistic. I have such a nice cruising speed now, that I am looking for that same quality. It is going to take some prop testing

No problem and thanks, just didn't know what you where getting at. I'd love to see all the Bravo and TRS boats with these drives so folks could do more boating and less time on the trailer. |
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
Hello Guys
Thanks for the information. Wasn't sure if it was a bolt on type of deal or had to have the tansom reworked. Yes. I agree its nice to see everyone helping each other Thank you Jim |
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
Way to go Konrad...for giving all those TRS boats a second crack at big power. :drink:
"I'd love to see all the Bravo and TRS boats with these drives so folks could do more boating and less time on the trailer." I'm wit dat too! |
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
That's why I did it. Don't have to worry about the drives.
|
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
Everyone using Konrads, do you see a speed difference in the Bravo vs. Konrad?
|
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
Well after all of the that, there might be a clearnace issue with the U-Joints. Biggus called me last night and Konrad and told me that the drives they shipped me should have had the smaller U-Joints. If my motors are properly aligned there won't be an issue, but if they are not, there may be a rubbing problem. Konrad said they will make it right and send a represenative to my house and change out the U joints. Seems like they are going to stand by there product and make it right. I think Biggus will probably be coming out for the swap. I am just glad that it isn't the middle of the summer and boating in NYS is over. I just want to be right and ready to go. Big investment for me to have issues. I will keep you posted.
Great deals on ebay for my TRS Drives. PM me if you are interested. NO RESERVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://search.ebay.com/trs-outdrive_W0QQsacatZQ2d1 |
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
cigrocket,
Like I've said before; Konrad is a stand up company with customer service second to none! We had an issue with getting the wrong lower(OUR fault not Konrads) for a conversion we did and Konrad shipped a new one out ASAP without any charges. They just want it to be correct. Will Merk or any of the other drive manufacturers do this? |
Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
You are correct. They are going to make it right. If my motor mounts are perfectly aligned and I can use the big U-Joint I will. If not, they are going to swap them out for me. No Charge. It's going to be a long winter. I can't wait to start Prop testing. I am still need to setup the tiebar situation

Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
Call me and we can get it set up. Or I'll call Kurt and have him measure up when he's there.

The drives on center are 35.25".

Re: TRS Out......Konrad In !
1" Bar will run you about $600 with clevis ends.
|
I currently have my transoms off. I am really considering the konrads so should I just use the Konrad assemblies or just the mercs?
