[QUOTE=Rippem]wrong and wrong.
there are only a couple of states left where you can get by without paying full blown sales tax. MO. and Dl. being two of them.
the other half of the legal terms of documentation other than the number permanently attached to the hull..
Is that name and hailing port are REQUIRED to be displayed on the boat!!!
in the other 45 states or whatever, they will catch up to you on the tax!
Go ahead...pay no tax for a state reg. sticker AND display no name with hailing port and see how many times the patrol passes you by! That is absolute to the man you're "skipping out"!
here in NY they (the state) actually does field audits, scouting marinas looking for unpaid tax! You buy a slip for the season and as far as the states concerned you intend to use the boat in that state for more than 60 days a year. You could argue that, but you won't win!
I've seen it being done more than once and have myself 7 or 8 years ago gotten a letter from Albany to send in proof of tax paid, and I had a valid NY reggie and numbers on the boat!
Russian roulette for you if you think it's free ride.[/QUOTE
please read my post again. i stated that you do not have to have registration numbers and letters if you are not operating on those waters for more than 60 consecutive days. if you are documented, you have to have name and hailing port on the stern of the boat and documentation number permanently afixed somewhere on the boat(usually the numbers or number plaque mounted). if you are permanently mooring or docked in a marina for more than 60 days, they typically will require registration in the state where that marina resides. i mentioned that it does not typically apply if you trailer your boats. yes you can get around the sales tax and not have to be registered in your state if you trailer, but the cost as i stated before is that they tend to stop you to request to see registration. i carried a waterproof folder that had my doc. certificate, all my insurance info, the page from the missouri water patrol manual that verified not having to have reg. numbers on my boat, and believe it or not, i had an officer from missouri water patrol fax me a letter stating i was correct that was also in there. i included this because the missouri patrol on loto is often times just auxilliary officers and they often times did not know this. anyway, paying the in-lieu-of tax in missouri was 3 or 4k and i paid it the last time just to not be hassled.

sorry I got your meaning somewhat out of context.
regardless, the point is unless your going to play hide and seek on a trailer, not rent a slip, enjoy being hassled, bla, bla, bla...
your gonna pay some tax somewhere. Documentation doesn't "get you out of paying tax"

Rippem, in VA, if the boat is documented you do not have to register it with the DGIF; therefore, you do not have to pay sales tax. Saved me several grand. Also I am not required to have any State stickers or numbers on the boat, which is even better. AND, annual renewal with the CG is free. Can't beat that!
There are so many documented boats around these parts there is no hassle factor either.
