We even played with Surface drives....

Made 'em from scratch actually....... put our money where our mouth is..........They were fixed of course.

' Course this was only an artists rendering...sort of a design exercize....

Nobody on OSO has enough expertise to discuss surface drives with the "experts" of course......especially with a dead level shaft angle and a selection of gear ratios from 2:1 to overdrive........ with a quick change gear feature....inside the boat.... connecting two engines on each side into one shaft.... Did I mention the props were 24" diameter 5 blade cleavers with pitches of 32" to 36"? or that the struts aerated the props?

Don't even get me started on the rudder project.

Nobody would actually be able to make such a thing in real life....

Rich, too funny! Why is it every day I have to deal with self proclaimed experts? Old wine in new bottles? "We even played with surface drives?" What year? 1979?

Nobody on OSO has expertise to discuss surface drives? Nobody especially Howard, Rik and Peter who know nothing about the boat they build. Damn I should have listened to a guy who experimented with Surface drives in 1979. What the hell was I thinking.

By the way the 28 looks good. So do the old boats from the 70's? I like the Merc number 6 drives as well. I just wanted to avoid breaking the gears like Gary and Bud did, replacing the cracked gimble the gimble ring, and changing the monel prop shaft after 3 seasons in salt water. I enjoy pleasure boating.

By the way how do u handle "this part no longer available" no superceding part. I hating making my own parts.

Let's put this whole thing into perspective shall we?

1. The Surface drives on JJ were built in 1989 not 79. The drop box/quick gear change technology is still not commercially available.

2. The Arneson drive essentially as it appears today was developed in 1980.

3. The 6 drive was introduced in 1988 or 89. and dry sumped in the mid 90's. It was admittedly, a derivative of the original stern drive , designed by Charlie Strang, a Mercury Marine ( the unheralded source of most of the performance marine R&D in the industry) Engineering executive, for Volvo in 1959. This was essentially a merging of an outboard (there's that word again)lower unit ...and an inboard engine.

4. The surface drive concept is actually as dependent on props, blade cupping and rake as it is on shaft placement. Outboard racers actually advanced this concept over the years while simultaneously raising engine heights thru "rev sticks" . This practice dates back to the 30's. In fact it was outboard development that gave us the cupped surfacing prop, the speedmaster lower unit, power trim, adjustable "x" dimensions, tunnel hulls, pad bottoms and a host of other enhancements used in the inboard market today.

5. We had 5 blade props in 1989...The 6th blade was introduced a few years later.

6. Turbine technology as it appears today was perfected in the mid 80's on unlimited hydros.....and early offshore efforts.

7. The Catamaran and step Vee hull designs were base lined at that time as well.......... as were "aerospace materials".

What else is new?

The point...is that all of this stuff is "old wine". I am awaiting, as I presume are the rest of the performance world,...."The next new something", instead of endlessly rehashing the same old concepts.

I am, admittedly and voluntarily, obsolete......... of course, but please spare me all of this condecension based on your "new" technologies, most of which date back to a time before you were born.

Oh that old thing?

It's a Switzer Wing of course.

designed in 1960....... it features.

A four point hydro hull with the added feature of a "Ram Wing" employing an actual aircraft wing airfoil and an adjustable, foot accuated aeleron( "aileron" for all you folks from Yazoo City) to utilize ground effect for maximum speed. The hull is powered by two 350+ hp @ 10,000 RPM current era Champ class racing outboard motors. These engines feature 24 volt power trim and hydraulically adjustable prop shaft height. The entire rig weighs under 1000#'s.

The original Wings.......like the one pictured below... exceeded 100 mph in the early 1960's....with a pair of 80 Hp outboards.

This design is still years ahead of anything on the water today in top speed potential IMHO.
