That acutally happened on the Welland Canal. The bridge operator was at fault. Turned out he was drinking and taking meds. Nobody was killed, but the guys on the bridge of the Patterson boat had a very close call. The resulting fire in the engine room made repair too costly and the ship was scrapped. The company still had some other ships but the loss of the ship was too costly and they went out of business after 100 + years.

Thanks for the info. What a shame- it looked like a fairly new rig.

I wouldn't want to be on the bridge listening to the captain as the bridge came down.... Those big ships take miles to slow down and stop. I'm sure he saw it coming from a long way off. Also... I wouldn't be standing anywhere near as the thing caught fire.... Anyone remember the Texas City fire where a ship caught fire at a dock?.... People were asking, " What's on the ship?".... " Oh nothing dangerous... just some fertilizer..".... A few minutes later...... Ba-Boom..... And the whole town is flattened. :(
