Looks like the bridge operator was lowering the bridge when it hit. Ship captain probably thought it was still up.

That acutally happened on the Welland Canal. The bridge operator was at fault. Turned out he was drinking and taking meds. Nobody was killed, but the guys on the bridge of the Patterson boat had a very close call. The resulting fire in the engine room made repair too costly and the ship was scrapped. The company still had some other ships but the loss of the ship was too costly and they went out of business after 100 + years.

Thanks for the info. What a shame- it looked like a fairly new rig.

I wouldn't want to be on the bridge listening to the captain as the bridge came down.... Those big ships take miles to slow down and stop. I'm sure he saw it coming from a long way off. Also... I wouldn't be standing anywhere near as the thing caught fire.... Anyone remember the Texas City fire where a ship caught fire at a dock?.... People were asking, " What's on the ship?".... " Oh nothing dangerous... just some fertilizer..".... A few minutes later...... Ba-Boom..... And the whole town is flattened. :(

I will NEVER forget my second year up in Maine we were just lying in bed watching the elevenoclock news. I was nearly asleep and I heard the words "Sunshine Skyway" and just bolted up in bed. I was just speechless. I couldn't comprehend to Terri just how high that bridge was. Everytime I travel over it now, all I can do is remember that night...:(

That was definitely a rough one. The collision caused several cars and a Greyhound bus to fall 150 feet killing 35 people. :(

Re: Slight Miscalculation.

I believe there were four sheriff's deputies or retired sheriff's officers or something like that in the car right at the edge. They were heading to some kind of Breakfast of some type.

When they got out of the car they crawled back to safety, not daring to stand up... Don't blame them there....:drink:

The only survivor was driving a pick up that landed on the bow of the ship....

Yep! Another rule.'' Never try to put out a fertilizer fire with water". Several firemen were decapitaded from the blast and a small plane of sightseers was blown out of the sky.
