Octane Boost
 

I have had my motor retuned with a new chip and the motor builder recomends only running 91 octane. My question to you all is that if in the event I can find the 91 on the water, as only some marinas on my lake have it. Is it ok to add octane boost to the 87 or 89 grade. Does it actually work and are there any brand that out perform others ?

I researched extensivly..you need 10% mix of to fuel...I even "home brewed " my own...got to be a pain... sold the blowers and went back to carb and "pump gas"...do a search here and you'll be suprised...:eek: :rolleyes: :drink:

the 10 % mix is for torco ?? Some of the other posts said 1 quart per 20 gallons to bring 89 to 93. Am I safe to asume it would be 1 quart to 40 gals if Im trying to get 89 to 91 ?

I keep 4) 5gal jugs full of 98-110 high octane race gas around & add 10-20 gals to my tanks every other time out or so (rarely fill my boat beyond 1/2 a tank which = 70gals). Having access to the race fuel makes the chore of lugging around & filling the up the jugs all the time a little easier to deal with.

98 oct is unleaded
110 oct is leaded

Ilmor said it was ok to run it & that it wouldn't void my warranty. No performance advantage was to be expected.

what many dont realize is that there is a performance DISadvantage when running more octane than one needs...

I recently learned that gasoline must never be stored in plastic containers. It seems that many of the chemical compounds added to the petroleum base (for lubrication, octane enhancement, atc) are so aromatic that they actually will evaporate through the plastic. This came directly from VP Race Fuels. They said you can lose 10+ points in octane in a week.

I saw "jug" and I always associate that with "plastic".

I guess all of these new tanks in the ground at service stations better hope for a quick turn over:eek:

I asked that very same thing- was told they are lined to prevent it from happening

Arent the tanks in most of our boats plastic these day ?

Along with snowmobile, 4 wheelers, dirt bikes, etc.
