Re: OUCH! This may hurt the re-sale!!
It was an OST Crane out of Ventura.
I heard the oiler was running a 300 ton hydro crane. Apparently, he was trying to set it in the water so it could be motored to Long Beach. I was told the wind picked up pushing the boat outside the crane chart and the guy tried to lower the load very quickly (panicked) and when he stopped quickly that was all it took. It went bye bye. Tank - Got any pictures of the crane? I'm sure it didn't look very pretty. |

I recieved those pics from my sister-in-law. I'll see if she has any more. I just figured it was one of those pics that float around the internet. |
Re: OUCH! This may hurt the re-sale!!

OK, OK, I got some more info. It was actually in Port Hueneme Harbor. They said it was dropped from at least 20 feet, then the crane fell on top of it!!
Here's another pic. I'm going to go down there in the morning on the way to work and snap some more pics. Supposidly the crane is already moved but the boat is still there. |

Re: OUCH! This may hurt the re-sale!!
Dumb question, but who is responsible in a situation like this? I had trim tabs stolen off my boat at my marina and there are signs everywhere posted that if you are a paying customer you are liable for theft and damage. Anyone know? hammer

Re: OUCH! This may hurt the re-sale!!
I went down there this morning and it is A LOT worse in person! It's f*ckin' done! I took a bunch of pics that I'll post later when I get home. There's a piece of the crane next to it that looks like they cut off. It's bent to sh!t too.
It is a Sunseeker, either a 75 or 80. I heard it was going to be shipped over seas which would make sense since Hueneme harbor is an importer/exporter "world" port. All business, no recrereational use. I'll get the other pics up asap. |

Re: OUCH! This may hurt the re-sale!!
I "almost" had a similar situation occur about two months ago over at Channel Islands Landing on Victoria.
I store my boat there because I prefer the hoist to get me in/out of the water. Their "real" hoist broke down so they brough in a Pettibone crane to use instead. The last time I used it, my 23" Baja was spinning in circles, dangling at the end of a 50" line. But I was lucky, the bow missed the concrete pilings by 6" at least. As everyone said, that crane was simply an accident waiting to happen! The good news ..... they have gotten rid of the Pettibone and are in process of installing a real 8000# boat hoist. Good things happen to those who wait :evilb: ..... Now I can get a bigger Baja! |
Re: OUCH! This may hurt the re-sale!!
We had a printing press shipped from Italy 7-8 years ago. The dock workers put a 50,000 lbs unit (one of 9) on a flat bed to move it into the yard away from the docks until it cleared customs......they flipped the entire rig! THEIR TRUCK AND OUR LOAD! Several weeks went by before our riggers were allowed to come pick up the containers. When they did one container couldn't be found.....turns out they hid it in the back area so no one would see it. Once the dock/company accknowledge what they did they sent a letter of apology along with a copy of the federal law that says they are liable UP TO $500.00..YES THAT"S IT! Your own insurance must cover the rest!

Re: OUCH! This may hurt the re-sale!!
An oiler is the crane operators helper. They rig and lube the crane.
I'm not a lawyer but the way I understand it is that, in a case like this, the company "meaning the crane company" will usually pick up damages via their general liability policy. Trouble is, in a major &%$%up like this it could max out the policy. After that point they could go after the company assets. Typical coverage for a high risk operator is $5M. If they have the coverage it will be soaked up fairly quick. Tell me if I'm missing anything: $3M New Boat $1-2M New Crane $100-1M Repair Dock Pier Structure (yes it was damaged) $100K Repair the massive dent in ship when the crane counter weight hit it. $100k Several days down time for the cargo ships waiting to use the dock. I was told this could be costly but dont have any figures. Unknown ecomonic damages when the pier is shut down for repairs. $100-2M BS claims, ie I can't fish anymore because the loud noise scared them fish away. Don't laugh, this is California. |

The bottom picture you can see that the whole helm was shifted (out of the boat) upon impact. I don't think there's going to be much salvage of electronics there.

Re: OUCH! This may hurt the re-sale!!
Hey guys, I won't be able to be this years card boat in Catalina for the SCOPE Poker Run, we were having our new boat delivered this past week and there was some problems and damage that occured with the shipping company...we have made a damage claim with the freight company but they said it may take some time to process the claim, so in the meantime we will just have to keep using our SCARAB :D

That is a shot of the piece of crane that was cut away and left. I'm no crane expert...But it looked like there was some failure there.
