I have had the same battery in one boat going on it's 5th year, DEKA. The other boat has a Walmart batt and it's going on the 3 rd yr. Being in the north during the winter months they sit on battery tenders all winter. Prior to placing on the tender I add distilled water if required. |

I swapped from the 2 deep cycle factory batteries to 4 Blue Top Optimas. I like them a lot.
ADV: They are smaller. They are lighter. They have much better (more solid and more aesthetic) mounting box options. They are more powerful, and built to withstand a pounding. DISADV: They are expensive. You can't find them everywhere in stock if you need one in a hurry. Getting them into their mounting box takes a while, especially in tight quarters, (but once they are in, they are NOT going anywhere). |

You should check out their website. There is alot of info on cold cranking amps. They rate test theirs down to 7.2volts where as the other manufacturer's 11.5volts. Thus the lower cca.

A ten amp charger won't get them up from dead. You got to use at least 20 or more at first. Then after they are up a bit, you can use less amperage. this is good info I have one in the garage I thought went south will try a different charger on it Problem with my smart charger is it doesnot have a manual mode and will shut of very quikly if it doesnot see a voltage. So if battery is completly dead wont charge ist My manual charger only goes to 10 amps What type of charger do you use? |

Also, do not set your batteries directly on concrete while they are stored, (garage/basement). Set them on a shelf/2x4s, etc.
For some reason, concrete drains batteries, even when you have the trickle chargers hooked up. |

I'm sure everyone might already know this, but just mentioning that for marine use, the Blue Tops are the most appropriate, not the Red Tops or the Yellow Tops ( those are more for automotive uses ).

I have found on lead/acid batteries that keeping a "Battery Tender" connected to them adds about 2 years to their usefull life. I use the tenders on my boat, hot rod and even my garden tractor. Check and add distilled water yearly as needed of course.

I'm on my third blue top in 2 years. What a waste of money. I bought one to run my stereo, but I can't keep it charged. I now have my current one on a battery warmer for the winter. We'll see if this works. Next time - just a another series 7 will do.
