Headsets - what do you think

What do you think about headsets? Good, bad, a waste of money, I wouldn't be without them, whatever....

Von Bongo 02-24-2007 06:48 PM

we use ours all the time unless it's a very short drive. We have a portable system. We talk at normal converstaion levels and can run the stereo throught them. Just like riding in a car.

Vinny P 02-24-2007 06:58 PM

I just rigged up my set this winter. I havent got a chance to use them yet. I hope they work well.

jeff1000man 02-24-2007 07:16 PM

I havn't riged mine yet, but I am looking forward to not screaming to talk to people.

Crazyhorse 02-24-2007 07:19 PM

I've got a 4-place portable setup with four headsets. I also have a fixed-mount 6-place intercom that I'm building the harness on right now. I'll install it this spring.

OL40SVX 02-24-2007 07:21 PM

I used some for the first time this weekend. They're pretty cool. I was in the back and there was too much wind noise and the mic wouldn't stay in place, so I took it off for the rest of the run.

kjm5125 02-24-2007 07:23 PM

Like'em, You can actually have a conversation while riding in the boat. On mine, you can hear the stereo and VHF radio.

What system do you have?

SDH 02-24-2007 07:29 PM

For those of you that have head sets what brands do you recommend?

Ron P 02-24-2007 09:02 PM

These are the best.

We use a 6 place sigtronics with sigtronics behind the head head phones. We can use it 2,4 or 6 place and I have it set up to attach with suction cups. We can run it off a 12v plug in or 9v battery.

http://www.sigtronics.com/air/spo.html

Dave clark makes excellent stuff but much more $$. We are on our 4th year and never a problem with it. We also use a large mike muff to cut down a great deal on the wind. PN 100593
Heavy Duty Microphone Windscreen

It's the same set up they recomend for open cockpit aircraft

I found this. Sigtronics does seem reasonable.

What would you guys recommend for something really simple? A portable system with only 2 headsets so my wife and I can chat. No radio of stereo plug-ins mnecessary. Thanks!

BillR 02-25-2007 08:35 AM

I heard there is a new wireless bluetooth system available. Don't know by whom though.

Panther 02-25-2007 08:43 AM

Have a friend who did a whole system with a brand new avionics system for $500. He had to make up some of the harnesses though.

The Blue Tooth Setup sounds pretty cool!

Crazyhorse 02-25-2007 09:48 AM

Scroll down to headsets and intercoms,

http://www.gulf-coast-avionics.com
select intercoms/headsets in the red taskbar,

http://www.sportys.com/acb/Category....ID=19&CATID=94
check out the headsets and intercoms.

http://www.mypilotstore.com/MyPilotS...word=flightcom
shop this store.

Dyno borrowed my Microcom portable intercom for an extended cruise and later that year he got a portable and headsets for his birthday. My portable will operate on 2 9V batteries for about 5 days and also can be hardwired to the aircraft/boat 12V system.

Many people use aviation-based units in their boats, as I do. Many others buy custom-made marine units that have a VHF input as well as stereo and celphone inputs.

All of the portable intercoms will interconnect with handheld VHF radios and many will connect with certain VHF fixed-mount radios.

I have a mixed bag of headsets; a David Clark, a Flightcom, a Telex that belongs to my wife and a Microcom that I've had since I was in primary flight training (this one is still my favorite).

Two cans and a string....do you really want to listen to your wife?:evilb:

kjm5125 02-25-2007 11:10 AM

My system is from Racing communications. They have all types of systems. One important factor is make sure the headset is adjustable and is secure on your head. You don't want it coming off when you hit the big water. www.racingcommunications.com

We have installed TIGER on some boats and they worked great. Used the hard wired port versions. They were clear and the Mic was very high quality. They make them for military aircraft applications and are basically indestrcuctable. You can also set the sensitvity as well as voice activation for on off/ wind noise/ play music (again high quailty specs for that as well) also VHF plus a slew of other multi-interface configurations. They have a large options list so you can really tailor the set up for your exact needs.

In this case though they are worth the extra money. 20 year old Clark headsets being offered on Ebay for $150 each. If they where not really good people would just toss them after having them that long. I'm cheap in that I buy and pay for quality that will last along time...........

Ted G 02-25-2007 01:23 PM

I just ordered a pair of these

http://www.cruisingsolutions.com/headsets.asp

I figure for 70 bucks I'd give it a try. And if they go over or dead-oh well!

I also suggest you buy headsets with Gel ear pads and then get the cloth covers for them if they don't already come wiht them. Makes them very comfortalbe and won't get slippery when you sweat.

I like the behind the head as the adjustment for head sizes is a little more and also they tend to catch a little less air.

Here's the covers. I can hook mine to a hand held, Cell phone, stereo and can also plug in a tape recorder. We run off 9V batteries and I've only had to change them each spring. I bought some extension midi cables for the intercom so I can mount stick them to the gunwales out of the way and also bought extension for the head sets so people can move around and not be hung up by the 4 foot headset cables.

rbtnt 02-25-2007 08:15 PM

I've used the Revolution Marine headsets with throat mics for 3 years and they work great.

Will not do another poker run without them. Everyone feels safer and we can talk during the runs. The mics are always activated. There is almost no background or wind noise and you don't miss the first syllable like some of the voice activated units.

I have the optional alerts that provide audible engine alarms in the headsets.

Anyone have a guess as to the total cost to put a full David Clark (or similar) 9800 Marine system in? Thank you

Von Bongo 02-27-2007 10:12 AM

A protable dave clark aircraft system is about $700 for 6 places and figure about $300 a piece for a base DC head set. So thats $2500. So now make it a marine system and hard wire it plus upgrade to a behind the head set.

I going to guess $4-5k with good DC head sets.

exshipdude 02-27-2007 06:07 PM

If your looking at headsets try these http://www.piratecom.com/

They are getting great reviews from those using them and apparently are one of the most inexpensive set-ups on the market

shoregasm 03-01-2007 11:25 AM

they are great !!

BTW, I have a few extra sets if anyone interested, drop me a line

hopefully this will save me all the e-mails and phone calls I get about these.

this is the wireless set up that we use on the OSO boat. It is custom programmed so I can hear my vhf or talk to others in the boat.

Several members that have seen them in person have ordered them. They have a 1/4 mile range and can be used for launching the boat, docking, testing from the shor, or running wires around the house, etc.

I bought them from www.racingcommunications.com. Tell them you want the ones like they gave OSO. Their service was great and I cold not be happier with the product.

The right finger in pic 1 is touching the push to talk button (when you are running) voice activated other times, the box clipped to his t-shirt has the vhf button to talk to other boats. You can also just get the headsets and talk to one another with no vhf, stereo, etc options.

They run on AA batteries and the batteries last for a long time.
