We bought our daughter a Battery operated Hummer for Christmas to learn on and today I picked up a Suzuki 50 quad for her fourth birthday is April. Our son is 19 months old and these will be great starters for him as well.

many....many moons ago, I bought a go cart sans power. I used a group 27 deep cycle, a big old contact switch hooked to the gas pedal cable, an old 12v starter motor with a long shaft and no covered drive end housing and a pulley/ V belt drive instead of a chain. The belt( washing machine fabric covered V belt) allows some slippage so the motor hits full torque instantly and then the belt catches up. Cart runs around 25 mph and the G27 will last around an hour between charges. I mounted a small brushless electric fan and some sheet metal around the starter motor for cooling. Total cost was around 250 bucks plus a little rigging time. My daughter loves the thing.
