Can you restore old gas?

The gas in my boat is 18 months old,it has stable in it is it usable? Will PRI fuel additive help? or should I get rid of it?

NJgr8ful 04-03-2007 03:02 PM

I'd say depending what motors and compression your running, and the octane you 'need' to run, but I heard it drops an octane point or 2 every couple months while it sits.

Personally, I'd dump it start over. Last year dumped @175-200gals :( Didn't want to chance my new blower motors with 'old' fuel and that was only 5mo. old. Cost me $500 and sucked, but better than melting something and having engine builder tell me "I told you to dump it" :evilb:

sakoutis3 04-03-2007 03:35 PM

Sell it to a landscaper they can burn it in their lawn mowers.:drink:

burtandnancy 04-03-2007 04:10 PM

The answer to your question is NO

CMG 04-03-2007 04:29 PM

run it in your car / truck - for gods sake don't dump it.

Mark 04-03-2007 04:42 PM

Thats "liquid gold" these days! As long as you added another batch of stabilizer in it after 12 months, it should be ok. But if you are going to use it, it would be a good idea to add more stabilizer to it first. I believe stabilizer ultimately includes an octane bost. Or, as stated above, sell it to a landscaper, etc.
I have had Diesel sit for that long with stabilizer in it and it worked just fine. Just my .02

cuda 04-03-2007 04:45 PM

Retard the timing a little, then add some Toulene to it.

Audiofn 04-03-2007 06:34 PM

There is no way I would run hard with it that old. Run it REAL easy tell you can get new gas in it then run it harder and harder pregressivly.

Linster 04-03-2007 07:32 PM

Add some premium and move on

Jupiter Sunsation 04-03-2007 08:41 PM

Check its flammability with a lighter if it goes, its good! :D

10x 04-03-2007 08:44 PM

Pump it out. Use some of it in your everyday vehicles, mix it in with fresh gas. The rest, throw a little in the boat every time you refuel with fresh 93. Or, add some 110, and use up the old stuff quicker.

Ask Dave, he'll give you the right advice on how much to mix.:D

REMOVE FROM BOAT FIRST!!!

BY U BOY 04-03-2007 10:23 PM

put some 110 in and run it.

dyno 04-04-2007 06:40 AM

Lots of opinions.....none on the pri additive? Guess I'll hit up Wesco for some 110 ans take it easy....

Chris288 04-04-2007 07:37 AM

how big is your tank and how much is in there ?? Stabil is good for one year, they say if your going to leave it longer to add double the amount and it's o.k. for 2 years. Depending on how much you have in there, I would top it off with fresh and run it..

RedDog382 04-04-2007 08:14 AM

Dyno,

I agree with adding 10-15 gallons of 110 leaded racing fuel. You will be good to go!

And what is this non-sense of getting rid of the boat ...? Did you see the video posted here recently of a life of boating memories? The kids will love it and always remember you for it.

Chris

Wobble 04-04-2007 09:54 AM

Race gas is running $11-$12 a gallon and rising, I think best bet would be to drain boat tank down to about a quarter tank and fill up with super. Use the old gas in a modern car that calls for 87 octane.

dyno 04-04-2007 11:38 AM

the motors are onlt 8.75/1 compression to begin with.....I this there is about 75 gallons in the boat I might just pump it out and run it in my truck. Hey Chris long time no hear from ya!!You got some MIS go fast gas layin around you dont need???:D

handfulz28 04-04-2007 11:54 AM

How many people have proper storage for 20gals let alone 100+? What do you do with all that fuel if you remove it from the boat?
Drain some and run it in a lawnmower or something. If it runs, then fill the boat up with fresh gas and take it easy for a little while. If it won't run in the lawnmower, either dump it or add Toluene at 1:25 or less. You just want it to mix and clean up a bit.

Brad Zastrow 04-04-2007 12:05 PM

I drain mine every year. I can store 30 gal at a time in cans. I fill my cars with it. Takes no time at all to get rid of a 100 gals.

SLOWOUTBOARD 04-04-2007 12:25 PM

you better make sure theres no phase seperation with the ethenol sitting that long

the duke 04-04-2007 12:37 PM

Stabil does nothing to increase your octane, or even maintain it. It just helps to keep varnish down in your carbs. If you have fuel in the boat that has ethanol in it, for that long, get rid of it in your car or something else. It all seperates out and knocks the octane down. Gas is cheaper than pistons.

Sorry, buddy ... that well dried up two years ago when they swithched providers to Sunoco. No "waste" fuel PERIOD. They put it back in the underground tank and re-sell it again for $5.50/gal. :(

Pretty good deal while it lasted. :D

dyno 04-05-2007 07:08 AM

I was just yankin ya anyhow Chris!!You still workin at the track?

RumRunner 04-05-2007 09:21 AM

Pump gas that is vented to the atmosphere starts to go bad, or loose the high ends within 30 days. Since your fuel tanks are vented, and the fuel is a year and half old get rid of it! Burn it in a low performance street car or lawn equipment. Don't keep it in your boat, and don't try mixing it with anything. It's not worth it, unless you really like your engine guy, and want to give him some money!

UNSANE 04-05-2007 09:26 AM

I finally got my boat running after 8 months. There was about 60 gal in the tank. I dumped some octane boost and 25 gallons of 93 oct (I have a 525 and it runs off 87), then ran the boat. It was a little ugly at first but it didn't take long (few minutes) for the boat to be running back to her old self. Heading out this weekend to burn of more fuel:evilb:

Knot 4 Me 04-05-2007 10:05 AM

Guys, I filled up at the end of October with 89 octane E10. Placed the appropriate amount of Sta-Bil in it. 79 gallon tank. I do this because when the weather breaks in the winter months I like to take the boat out. This year, only got one run in on November 28th. I've ran the boat twice now in the last couple of weeks. Got half the tank burned out. She still runs like a champ with no knock. I will now top off with fresh gas. I always wait until after I get the first tank ran through to change the fuel/water separating filter to see how much water was in the fuel over the winter. To date, I've never seen more than a couple of small water bubbles. Do this every year. So, my fuel goes 5 months with no ill effects. Your experiences may vary. Oh yeah, this is on a 496 MAG. Only needs 87 octane but I fill up with 89 at year's end to account for any drop off in octane.

I do the same ,Its not worth taking a chance. The girl friend likes the free gas and I also save it in drums just incase we loose power or have another Huricane,I got caught with no gas on that one:(

Here's Johnny 04-05-2007 07:58 PM

This may be a stupid question but how do you guys drain the gas out of your boat?? What is the best way to do this?? Do you suck it out through the fill/vent?? Pull fuel line off and let gravity do it's job??

Let the electric fuel pump do the work ;) Pull off fuel line to the carbs, run a fuel safe hose, and pump away.

same here:drink: It pumps pretty fast ,Last time after sucking it out I jacked up the front of the boat and got another 4 gallons. Also One pickup in the tank is deeper that the other

Anyone ever try or know anything about the product from Starbrite called "Tron", it is supposed to help with phase seperation associated with the E-10. Supposed to have enzymes that break up and micro size the "gunk?" It was mentioned in Debartolo's column in Powerboat several months ago.

Nykamp 04-06-2007 05:49 AM

I have one of my Mech.'s come pump mine dry every spring and give him the gas for his work truck. This years he's getting some old 110.

Never heard of that. I have been using some stuff called "Ezorb" from West Marine that is supposed to do the same thing that you're referring to. One pint of it treats 320 gallons.

Chris288 04-06-2007 08:05 AM

I used star-brite star-tron a few times last year, I can't say I noticed any difference, but after reading about people burning up fuel pumps and having problems with ethanol fuel getting brown and jelly I decided to be safe than sorry. Now I read another thread on speedwake that says they are all gimicks and that ethanol is pure junk...

How do you recommend on 500 hp carb motors? Belt driven pump.

dyno 04-06-2007 10:24 AM

Buy a cheap 12 volt fuel pump from Napa, I carry one in case one of my good pumps takes a crap they are like $20. Put some leads on it with allagator clips.
