I don't understand how trusting the banks involved are/were.

In today's world of Nigerian offers of paying asking price + 10% extra cause he likes the state you lived in...

banks won't even get out of the office to have lunch on a mill ride to verify vin no.? Banks are the first to blame, they know better.
