1. Insurance, not even sure I can get Insurance on it seeing as the HP level is so much greater than what the boat came with

2. Fuel. The boat is on Lake Wisconsin, there are no pumps on the lake with 93 octane. This means, take it off the lift, load on a trailer and fuel it every time I want to use it. Doesnt sound like to much fun. I cant see hauling gas to the lake either, major pain.

3. Experience- I just dont have that kind of experience and am humble enough to admit that. Its really way to much motor.

You guys are funny though, I kind of figured Id get this kind of response. The boat is seriously scary at 88 MPH and Id like to think I have pretty big kahunas.

So, back to the original question. What should I "downgrade" to...BBY

Insurance will be a small issue with a late 80's boat no matter what.

The 525 EFI runs best on 87 octane.

Run the boat at 3500 rpms, it will live forever and cruise at the speed you are comfortable at without working the engine.

It sounds like you have exactly what we all want!

Not a first. I can think of one other. They must be brothers.

525 requires 87 octane.
You can get insurance... it may be a bit more than a 496.
Get a rev limiter.
Also resale will be better w/ a 525efi than a 496.

But if your heart is dead set on ridding yourself of the 525, do a new post w/ a title stating that you want to swap out... you'll find guys.

I have a pair of 496HOs with 300 perfect hours on them. They are still under warranty until 2010. I will deliver one to you, and take that nasty 525EFI off of your hands. Let me know what day works for you.

425hp/496 with low hours run 10-12k from what I have seen for sale.
here is one now still under warranty for 12.5k:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MERCR...QQcmdZViewItem
A low hour 525 should sell for around $20-25k
one here for $25.5k with 1 year warranty
http://www.tanglewoodmarine.com/parts.htm
figure paying $1-2k labor for the swap if you dont do it yourself.
Basically youll end up with an extra $10k and probably still run in the very high 70s.
To some $10k is play money,,to others its gas/insurance money for a couple long summers of boating, only you can decide..

For all the above reasons, the swap is a bad idea. You realize that you have a lever on the boat that can be used to control your comfort or discomfort
