Do the props have rubber hubs too? Or are they solid?

There is a newer 500 efi in a local shop that blew the couplers a couple of times. Turned out that the coupler that bolts to the flywheel was machined way off center from Mercury. If that is the case, Mercury should warrantee it.

That's the thing most are overlooking here.

My guess is they were off to begin with (it happens, even with offshore mounts) and the mechanic either didn't check the alignment because of the thinkng they were offshore mounts= pretty reliable, or the owner does hammer it hard.

[QUOTE=Griff;2144574]I would also replace with the HD couplers used on the 575sci and up-#21 in the diagram.

That's what I'm thinking. Did the repair shop install the cheap generic crap you can get off the internet or genuine Merc HD couplers?

Transom or stringer failure could play in also but like was said before, the age of the boat should rule that out.

if he spun hubs and you said that he got caught in some brush then those props and drive system took some serious trauma, if the motor was turning to the point that the hubs spun look for the weakest link in the system from the coupler to the prop.

sounds like he tried to power out of the brush.

They said he got caugt up on a limb/brush etc and tried to get on plane 3 time and put it in reverse and it came off It ran the rest of the day and on the way home it blew out.

This time he was going across lake mapeu,la and it let loose a again. He idled about 5 mile and it got back up on plane then went out again after about 5 min's

Wobble I will post whta they find
