We've done it a few time, usually anchor on the NJ side just outside Newport Yacht club. Get there early, at least 4pm and leave late so all the idiots are gone by then.
The current moves in the river and it's deep, so have a big anchor and a lot of line.
Like Tantrum said, its a zoo but if you get there early and anchor on along the NJ side its not too bad. If you get there late and get stuck in the middle of the harbor its not worth it.
