Baja outlaw vs sunsation aggressor
Ok after many days of mulling it over i have narrowed my choices to these two boats. i am just looking for input to put me over the top on either one. i like them both. so here go`s, which is better in rough water, faster, nicer interior ect..
thanks in advance for the input jason |
From talking to a sunsation dealer, I believe that the sunsation is a little faster, but that maybe because their are narrower. In turn that gives you less cockpit space which in my book carries a lot of weight. I am personally a Baja person so I know which one I would say. What size are you looking for. We a nice 25 Outlaw for sale. Bought new last July. Has 40 hrs on the 502. Willing to really deal on it, get a pratically new boat at a used price. If you're interested, send me an email and I will send you pics and info.
|
Tough question. If you can get your hands on a "Wednesday" Baja, you may have something a bit better than an Agressor, simply because the 24 or 25 Outlaw is going to be bigger than the Agressor. However, I would buy an any day of the week Sunsation, without any worries about it, it is just a bit smaller length and beam wise. It depends on what you want. Do you want to build a motor for it? Do you want stock power? The Agressor will FLY with some serious HP in it, but the Outlaw will need finesse to get it up and going, from what I have seen and experienced.
|
Two great boats but....just out of curiosity-did you consider an Active Thunder? If not, you should take a look before making up your mind. Pat and Steve will build you one any way you want it- talk to Gordo; he races one.
|
I haven`t simply because I have no experience with them. i currently own a baja hammer and like it. i would like to move up. as for the sunsation, i have ridden on a 32 and loved it however that s is WAAYYYY out of my price range. so I was looking at the agressor. I am looking to keep the stock power for a while, the one i am looking at has 496 ho, and maybee add a whipple in a year or two.
|
Depends on what you are looking for in this boat. The sunsation is 23'7" without the swim platform and has a 85" beam and weighs 3500 lbs dry. The Outlaw is 25' without the swim platform and has a 98" beam and weighs 4750 lbs dry. There is more headroom in the cuddy of the outlaw as well.
Sunsation has a more efficient hull and will be faster than the outlaw with the same power. Fit and finish goes to Sunsation as well. You will get better factory support with Sunsation too. You really need to go out in both boats and put them through the paces and deside what you want from this boat. Good luck on your search!! P.S. Check out the Active Thunder 25 too!! |
In 94 I had a 24 Outlaw with a 502efi and my friend had a 25 Sunsation with the same power. The outlaw handled the rougher water better and it was a dryer ride because of the higher freeboard. At the dock the sunsation was more rocky if you had people moving around. The Sunsation would walk away from the Baja on smooth water but he always commented on how it felt loose at higher speeds where the Baja was solid and could have handled more power. I had the Baja for a few years and had no problems with the boat.

I'd really look at the ACtive Thunder 25 or the Pantera 24. They are more directly comparable to the Sunsation. Sunsation is a small custom builder and so is both Active Thunder and Pantera. If you like the looks of the Baja and want to go with the fit and finish want a custom builder go check out AT or Pantera. Personally, I like the AT.
Anyway, you'll see that it really comes down to which you like best. The Sunsation will be smaller and faster than any of the above. The AT and Pantera will have more freeboard, more headroom and handle better in big water I suspect. But, it's up to you and they're all good boats. P.S. I've got a 30 foot Baja and enjoy it. |
Since you've already narrowed down your selection to those two boats, I'll stay on focus here.
Overlooking my obvious bias for a moment, I'll agree that both boats are great choices!!! Sticking with facts only here, The biggest differences will be with handling: The Outlaw will deliver a better ride with it being longer, wider and heavier. The Sunsation will undoubtedly be faster HP for HP. The Outlaw will have better headroom in the cabin and most likely be more roomy in the cockpit. Looking into other aspects, fit and finish, ammenities, option offerings, graphics, etc, etc...Look at both, you make the call on that one!!! Happy shopping, Good Luck! |
Here it is :
Sunsation for speed Baja for rough water Baja for more cabin room :) |
NVRENOUGH
I have a solution for you. Post a message here in the Baja forum and one in the Sunsation Forum for the President of each of the companies. See who gets back to you fastest and see who you never hear from. Jeff Jennings: Proud Sunsation Owner |
I think everybody is right about personal preferences etc. I've had two Bajas, currently a 25 outlaw and have been very happy. Everyone agrees the lines of the 25 outlaw are great. Parked next to a 25 aggressor the outlaw looks quite a bit larger. Speed to the aggressor, ride and room to the Baja. Either way you'll like it!
|
Baja27 pretty much said it all.
I've been in both and think they are great looking boats. If going fast is all you want to do , go with the Aggressor. There are ways to get the Sunsation to handle the rough, get the biggest k-planes you can and run a Bravo 1 style prop. There is one locally that runs mid 80's with no problems. I think that boat has something like 400 hrs on it. If you plan on overnighting alot then go with the Baja although you will be comprimising(sp) some speed. |
Take a ride in both first. I bought the Sunsation Aggressor because of its ride particulary the landings because of my bad back. Now I am ready to go riding the next day instead of recuperating for a week. Have been out in 4 to 6 footers was fun and scarry. Ready to sell it though and get a bigger one. Some consideration must be given to were you are going to use it. Most of the time in the great lakes here. This might upset a few but its like a 22 foot Donzi Classic on steroids. I own a Donzi to so dont burn me to bad

Wow nothing from Rick32? I know that he is super happy with his Sunsation and is waiting for thier new larger boat to come out so that he can go bigger!!! I am sure he will pipe in at some point.

One thing everyone has overlooked here is what you'll get on resale - hands down the Aggressor will bring you more - check with either NADA or ABOS - Resale is directly related to construction - The Baja Outlaw is a great production boat, I can not argue that, The Aggressor is a custom hand built boat that I will argue gives a better rough water ride than the Outlaw and delivers better speed. The Outlaw is a bigger boat both in width and length and thus gives you more move around space but the Aggressor is born of speed and performance and will leave the Outlaw with same HP in any water conditions. Even though smaller the Aggressor still has a 6 foot V-Berth, two galley bench seats with sink and fauchet and porta potty area. The contructions factors on the Sunsation are far superior to that of the Baja and thats saying nothing against the Baja, they are just two diffrently built boats. Not that I'm bias or anything but seriously consider what you'll get back in two or three years when your ready to move up.
My .02 cents |
PLEASE...the sun boat!
|
Without question "BAJA".
The Baja dealer I work with also had Sunsation and dropped the line. I got in a 25 they had and after having two Baja's I was not impressed. I don't know what area of the country you are in, but that will play a BIG role on resale. Sunsation will not hold it's value down here in North Carolina like Baja. And I'm sure it is the opposite in other parts of the country. Buy what you like. I just ordered a new Baja because the wife and I like it. It fits our needs. |
Nvrenough-I've got a point to make here so bear with me.
I'm presently building a home and with concern for boat storage I called Sunsation to ask the dimensions of a 28' (future boat). I spoke to a gentleman there and he was able to measure, then ,not later the height, width, and lenght on a trailer. I know this is not a big deal to most but I thought I would share. Sunsation--Great looking products and Super personel. |
I would buy the Sunsation for two reasons. First it has a more modern stepped bottom which should aid in resale value as well as better speed and fuel economy. The second reason is that Bajas are known to be light in the bow which is not good for running in ocean swells. It flys bow high rather than level.
Sunsation is more of a custom boat while Baja is one set above Sea Ray and one step below WellCraft. There is a reason that you don't see Bajas on the race course. But you do see Sunsations racing and winning. Just my opinion. |
My vote goes to the Sunsation
I had a 24 Rocket which is a 25 Agressor without the swim platform, used it for 6yrs and sold it for more than I paid for it.(I am in an area where they are well known) I have to disagree on the Baja being a better rough water boat I have been in both and the Baja pounds where as the Sunsation lands soft. Fit, finnish and construction quality on the Sunsation are also superior to the Baja. Go up to the Baja and hit the side with your fist or push on the sides of the boat then try doing that with the Sunsation and you will see what boat is built rock solid. |
how much do want to spend...what are your priorities???

Just listen to what MILLER said, he owns a BAJA and is going to get an ACTIVE THUNDER. Ive got one being built check it out www.activethunderboats.com go to latest news, Im RaDiO AcTiVe, what other boat manufacturer shows their boat being built on their website, from vacuum bagging to painting my dash the exact way I want it. This is a total custom manufacturer, not semi custom, and a 25 AT has way more cabin headroom than the other two boats mentioned and is better built. Compare apples to apples call Steve up 954-782-1111 ask for a cd rom or vhs tape, then go take a ride in the gulf in 5-8 seas not some lake chop and then make your decesion. Ive owned Formula, Fountain, and Powerquest all good boats also, but not like this THUNDER :)

quality may not be a priority for him JASSMAN!...he may want a big ski boat with fluffy stuff :D
|
Jassman-
Where is Diamondhead, MS? I am heading to Jackson tonight and then Gulfport Wednesday. Staying at the Beau Rivage. (Yeah, Baby)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
I have not owned a Baja so I cannot comment about them. I do own a Sunsation Rocket which is the same hull without the step or swim platform. The hull on the Sunsation is a very proven design which has only gotten better with time. I run mind hard in some nasty water and do not have any spyder cracks of any kind. The boat is solid, fast, and has an incredible fun factor. The factory support is even there for an old boat like mine. The factory answers questions from me just like they would for a guy that just bought a new one. They are boaters!!
|
If I had my choice between the Baja and the Sunsation, I'd take the Sunsation hands down.
Partially due to construction and performance, partially due to customer service. Now, add the Active Thunder, and the only decision becomes what colors you're gonna paint it. Take a close look at Active Thunder, everyone else is. |
Dude....
I find the question rather funny.... What I mean exactly is that one can't simply compare the two boats on ANY LEVEl .... They are simpley not in the same league...the only attribute they share are roughly same LOA..... THAT's IT ! For example, Ones a cut and paste deal , notoriously known for defects and " Warrenty Work " & the other is completly hand built by a family operation with a family concept in mind specifically with regard to it's customer base.... Take that into account and ask your question to yourself again...... I made the right choice with Sunsation. I hope you do as well. Rick32 :D :D :D :D |
Eric1969. The Beau is a great place to stay at, make sure you get their famous massages, both sides, HeHeHe. Diamondhead is 30 minutes west from there off I-10. Towards New Orleans, TODAY IS FAT TUESDAY - MARDI GRAS BABY, LAST DAY TO DO WHAT YOU WANT AND GET AWAY WITH IT, before lent, have a good time.. Im going to be on a float tonight throwin beads for tities, and what ever else I can see, got love this State :D

The Sunsation factory rep. responded to this string and is an active member of this site. I am sure I am wrong here but I have never seen a response from any Baja factory rep. on this site. If this is one of the more active sites for performance boats and mfg. support is a consideration then it appears only one of the two factories are listening to the customers. Score one for Sunsation. :)
In all fairness I should disclose I own a Dominator. John ;) |
Isn't the Sunsation significantly more expensive than a similarly equipped Baja? If that is the case then that is something to keep in mind.
Sean :) |
while you guys are talking about Baja....
how can you find the price anyway? I just went to www.bajaboats.com and used their configurator... I did all this works and then it said "Call for Prices" - that sucks! At least the Sunsation Configurator tells you the price as your select your options... The Baja site is pretty but functionally; it sucks. |
construction, performance and customer service........ SUNSATION!
I've been out in all the recent boats (25, 28 and 32) and all i can say is WOW! Great looking and great driving boats!! Can't wait it get out into a 38  !! sick rides.. all of them :D :D :D :D |
I've been in a couple of Outlaws. Not impressed with the ride. Thought they slam hard with the nose up in the air. I do think they look nice. I think you're comparing the wrong boats though. If you want to compare the Sunsation to something, look at AT or the 26' Sonic. Total custom jobs. If you are looking to go used, you can pick up a Baja for nothing. Someone mentioned they are a step up from SeaRay...I would say two steps down.
|
Yep just above Fountain...

I own a 2001 Outlaw and CFD12, whom I boat with owns a 1994 25 Agressor. Two totally different boats. Mine has the 496HO and the Agressor has a 454MAG with some mods (HP unknown) and my outlaw is faster but only my a couple mph. The agressor is 1000# lighter though and is a much smaller boat. I love my boat and it is tough to compare a 2001 w/ a 1994 but the factory support from Sunsation is outstanding. CFD12 is putting in a new dash w/ other interior upgrades and the factory has consulted him several times and that is great for a 1994 boat. I would have to say that my Outlaw is better in the rough. It handles it great and does not pound or hit hard on landings. The bow does not fly high either. Both are excellent boats and despite the "rumors" about Baja factory support I have contacted them several times with questions and they replied very quickly and have had great "after the sale" response.

Again, I'll simply state that the Sunsation is a custom boat and the Baja is a production boat. If you want to compare an angular, aggressive, classic looking 24/25 foot custom boat to a svelte, knife-like, stylish custom boat, compare the Pantera 24, Active Thunder 25 and Sunsation 25. Then you'll at least be talking about the same level of customer support, fit, finish, rarity, cache, quality of construction and resale. Then the choice will really come down to personal opinion. I would buy an Active Thunder in that scenario while you may well pick something else. Best bet is to compare price, quality, amenties vs. your realistic boating life and ride. For example, don't go for a hardcore, balls-to-the-wall speed machine with no amenities if the majority of your boating consists of going out with the family for weekending. Buy what fits YOUR lifestyle, taste and bank account. Remember, just because someone here likes the boat doesn't matter that much since you'll be the one making payments on it. Unless you want to loan it to one of us... :D
JASSMAN, I didn't say when I'd buy an AT, though! [ 02-13-2002: Message edited by: Miller ] |
