We keep our boat on a lift right across ffrom a busy public ramp...
I'd pay double what I pay now if they wanted just for the continuing entertainment the best spot at the Marina offers! Hell we go in early and break out the lawn chairs now-days... :D Never a dull moment at the ramp! |
I have left one or both drives in gear at idle long enough to go up and hook the winch strap. Then gone back, and killed the motors, trimmed the drives out, and winched the boat the rest of the way up.
This guy was at at-least 2500 rpm. As he winched the boat up the trailer he was putting the prop deeper into the water, effectively giving it more bite. This ramp is literally at the outer apex of a narrow U-turn in the river; with a lot of boat traffic. One wrongly timed wave, and that boat would have been on the roof of his truck; with the prop still spinning. I did not want to be anywhere this dude; much less his trailer hitch. |
I launch my boat every time, and see some amazing things, I have waited behind people, they move to the dock, I move to the next open dock, launch , park my rig, start the engines pull away before they even launch the boat?? Is it that hard?
I love to watch people with roller bunks, I just know the skeg repair is about the 5th ones they've paid for |
Two of us can load the boat onto the trailer in about 2 minutes without powering on. We have a good routine down and it goes real fast. Same for launching.
|
I've been loading by myself forever. Our ramp is 4 wide and I can be unloaded, tied and my truck parked before anyone else. Unless the dumbasses are blocking the dock ,then it's another story.
|
I'm the same way with the loading because it's just me. I power it up all the way, back the motor to a high idle (1200rpm in gear), run up to the nose and just hook the winch up and snug it without leaving the deck of the boat. I can just reach down and only need to give it one or 2 turns at most. Then kill the motor, trim up and pull her out. Takes about 1 min at most after I hop out to secure the winch to be out of the water.
Dean.......I know what you mean about the idiot factor. That's why I tend to use the ramp by Grills in the Canveral Inlet and stay AWAY from the Banana River one. The next time I go to BR, it will be with a video camera!!!:evilb: |
I got another one!
I was at the AT Factory for a couple days last week; and went over to the 14th Street Ramp in Pompano. 3 guys are pulling out a 22' Pachanga. They trailered it, and pulled up into the parking lot. I am watching a few other amateurs getting a kick. A few minutes later, I hear VROOOOOOOM. VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM... from the front of the parking lot. These guys in the Pachanga are revving it up and blowing the water out of it LIKE A JET SKI!!! No water hose hooked up, no nothing. Just a lot of steam and smoke pouring out of the exhaust. Absolutely hilarious. |
Well their impeller's toast. Next time out they'll be scratching their heads and wondering why they're overheating.
|
Thats friggin Great!!! LMAO!!!:angry-smiley-044:

I'll post some pics tonight. Dean |
Bass boaters are the only people I generally have REAL trouble with. Don't know what the hell their problem is and I don't care. How is that little jet boat working out? I wish I could spare some change for one myself. I would like to explore more of the St. John's further south.
|
Saw first hand the in-gear stunt at the city launch in Sandusky Ohio yesterday morning. Saw the set-up, then watched in shock as the boat nose popped to side of trailer bunk and boat climbed launch, wedging between truck and dock after running over owner.
Crazy stunt that I would never recommend ! |

The Seadoo jet boat is just the coolest little boat, we love it!:D We have done more unexplored boating, (for us anyway) in that little boat, than I have in all the 17 years I have been here in FL! I guess the bassboaters think the river belongs to them!:signs043: I asked one of the bassboaters on the way up the river, if this is the correct channel for the St.Johns, and could we make it all the way up to 528? His reply was, "Good Luck, you probobly get lost"! I said, "Have a nice day" and showed him my Garmin GPS Map 76 CX and off we went! :cool-smiley-011: We also found "Camp Deliverence" on the St. Johns, between 520 and 528! There must of been 15 Airboats there! :greenchainsaw: We just came off plane, and idled by and keep going!:D Dean |

I love the 1960 pontoons with the updated 1970 Evinrude hangin on it. Sittin in the middle of the ramp he decides to load the 14 member family with all the fixins. This must be the first time he tried to start it cause he has all his tools with him. Naturally it dont start. So off comes the cover and he proceeds to work on it...... for about 30 seconds until the owners of the other 10 boats on the ramp tell him to move his chit up the hill.

And this past Sunday at the lake ramp was no different!!! I backed my trailer down the ramp and then jumped in my boat to load it, but could not because some other boater decided to load his boat on my trailer!!! Had to wait till he backed off after another boat told him I was the one that the traailer was for! I just had to laugh!

We saw a similar situation a couple of weeks ago. We put the boat in at Brower park and I noticed a nice Sonic beached in the bay sitting realy low in the back. I parked the motor home and a guys comes by and said he noticed it also. We walked to the Sonic and noticed it was now lower. I climbed onto the boat and the water was up to the front seats. I turned the bilge on and you could see bubbles come to the surface. A guy walked toward us and it happened to be his boat. He forgot the plugs. By the time they dragged it up onto shore the boat was up to the fairing and only the nose was sticking up. The guy felt sick.

Crazy stunt that I would never recommend ! Funny thing was that he was pissed at the boat that caused the wake. :D |
saratoga race track is open for the summer here in upstate ny so it is quite crowded with a lot of people from all over----so we are out on saratoga lake this past sunday havin a blast on a beautiful sunny day----go to the dock to get out and as i pull the trailer around im waiting now behind three guys in a stingray I/O----they back in and the boat wont start------the line is piling up------they proceed to try for about a solid 3-4 minutes------they are now being stared at by everyone----they decide to pull up and out but stay kinda in the way of myself and others-----like 10 of us----so we load and im pulling up and hear a beeping noise and the stingray fires up-----drive up, on the trailer,no water-----so these guys smile at each other and rev it a few times---(DOH!!!!!)----and leave it running as they back it slowly down the ramp and back in the water---i was glad to be leaving.......:D

guess he is installing a new impeller this week!!! :cool-smiley-011: But some how them people who know no better get lucky!

One of my first times at the ramp..I can admit it. You will laugh!!
So I always wanted a Miami Vice Boat since I was a kid (I'm only 30 now :) I started out with a little 21 foot wannabe scarab here in Southern California and unlike all my friends that go to Havasu...I go to the Ocean. California people hate the saltwater but anyways....the 20+ mile jaunt to Catalina Island really called for a larger boat so after a few months I decided this is something I really want to keep doing I buy a 34' Scarab III from a guy that has alot more money than I do. He kept the boat in his slip in front of his house in Hunington Beach and kept the trailer at the marina. Its obvious the trailer wasn't important to him, really obvious. The coupler was all messed up, the safety cables were coming apart and full of rust, flat tires, brakes made all kinds of scraping noises, jack didnt work, etc. So I was lucky enough to inherit the spot at the marina since I really don't have a good tow vehicle. My Range Rover was great for towing it around the marina and launching, however neither the Range Rover or the trailer would make it beyond the marina. So its a public access ramp there as well and it's a holiday weekend and I have family and friends coming for a ride on the new boat. I arrive 30 minutes early to launch. Done it probably 15 times by myself with no troubles. Everyone stares because 1) this big boat is really nice, 2) my tralier is a POS and very noisy, 3) I am pulling a 34 foot scarab with a tiny old Range Rover..so the whole draws alot of attention. There are 3 ramps. 2 that everyone uses and 1 nobody uses because of logs and debris in the water. Oh did I mention I didn't think I needed the safety cables because I don't want a tetnus shot and I am only going about 50yds away.... So I started to line it up in ramp #2 with everyone else. It was busy and I figured I had gotten pretty good and fast at this so Ill squeeze in between a couple of these other people...and suddenly I thought you know...lets go over to this ****ty ramp #3 by myself where nobody else is...I really dont trust this trailer, so I pull forward to re-align for the different ramp and the trailer with the 34 foot 10k lb boat pops off of the hitch and takes off all by itself through the marina. I don't know how fast it was going but it looked like it was going about 50 mph....I watched with amazement thinking to myself "I have to do something" and then I realized "what the hell could I possibly do?" Nothing...I watched my boat that seemed to be going so fast, however it all seemed to transpire in slow mo....it started to turn about halfway down the ramp and I thought its gonna go sideways and roll over in the ramp, but it didnt it straightened itself back out and went right into the water, people were jumping out of the way....it was like something from a John Candy movie. I can't begin to tell you how embarassing it was. The boat stopped right where it should and the toungue of the trailer was sticking up out of the water, I backed down, tied up the boat to the dock, 2 guys came over and helped me throw the trailer back on and I was on my way....but talk about embarassing. It sucks to be new with boats....take it easy on the idiots at the ramp, we have all been there, some of us just had better luck then others. Oh by the way, I now understand that safety chains aren't just for the open road.
I can laugh now...thank god nobody got killed or hurt! |
I would pay for a video of that, please tell me someone got a photo.

My favorite all time ramp blooper. Bill Dance is the man!!
"Ain't that a fine Howdy do" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvAHYR5DnZE |
That's funnier than crap, but I still like the one where the snake drops on him better!
That scarab story was hilarious! |
Bill Dance bloopers are the best. If you are having a crappy day, you only need to watch a few of those!

Not really a ramp story but close....a couple of weeks ago going through a town Va pulling the boat with my family on vacation, I realize I missed a turn. I go a ways and take the next turn to get back on track and end up in a less than desirable neighborhood. When I get to next stop sign I can see the street I need to be on about 500 yards away across a railroad track. I pull up to the track and it has a sign showing a drawing of a semi truck with a trailer bottomed out on the track. I look at the track and think about having to back through the neighbor"hood" and decide to go for it. Sure enough the trailer bottoms out. Put the truck (07 F250 diesel) in reverse and the tires start spinning. Put the truck in 4wd and all tires start spinning. At this point the wife starts freaking. I'm like "calm down whats the chance a train is going to come". Lowlock still no luck. Put truck in forward and start turning the front wheels and finally start moving and basically plow the pavement with the trailer. Once across the track I get out to see if the trailer is damaged. It wasn't 45 seconds and the lights and bells start up for an oncoming train that turned out to be a fast moving Amtrack. I thanked my lucky stars and then caught hell for the next two hours.

catching hell sure was better then what could have happened!!!! I had a weekend at the ramp with no idiots!!!! First time in a while, kind of boring!!!!

I can laugh now...thank god nobody got killed or hurt! SB, that is some serously funny chit since no one was hurt. The difference between you and most dummies at the ramp is that hopefully you will only do it once.....the rest of them do the same butt moves over and over again. |

I attended a small/local poker run this weekend here in VA; with about 25 boats or so. We had all come in to the lunch stop and just got tied up.
Along come two guys with about a 30' Checkmate in tow. They spent about 40 minutes parked in front of the ramp. (Thank goodness no one was waiting.) They take the cover off, remove the tie downs, install wind-deflectors on top of the windshield, load 2 coolers and then 3 cases of beer, and a host of other stuff. Then, JUST before that back down into the water, one of them STARTS each motor DRY, and lets it run for 5 seconds or so!!! We could not believe it! We were all ROLLING IN LAUGHTER. About 30 minutes later, he pulls up to where we are docked, and asks "when are you guys leaving, and where are you headed?" Someone else in our group piped up and told him complete opposite of where we were headed for the next stop. It was quite comical, and everyone agreed we did not want this guy near us on the water. |
